  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mysterium-X dynamic range...

Graeme is not a "secret" weapon... :-)

I don't need to see engineering footage to remain a True Believer, Jim. I just can't wait to experience an MX in my Red One and then in my Epic. I do a lot of night-for-night shooting, and this new technology will be a wonderful new tool. Obsolescence is truly obsolete at Red. Thanks all you Reddies...

And, among other things, I'm looking forward to pushing deeper and deeper into twilight hours.

You're right, Jim ... not so much a "secret weapon" more a 'stealth weapon' ... as in, you don't know you've been hit until your tank disappears from underneath you .... the nice thing about Graeme is that he's from a very old lovely city in the north of England (Durham) - he talks softly with a Northern accent and now lives in Canada ... and you'd never suspect that he's a highly trained digital terrorist who can de-code a debayering algorithm from a mile away and plant a DSP time-bomb in your system without ever taking his eyes of his glass of malt whiskey.

Great day yesterday .... 5k here we come!

RedColor the new color science!

Will calibration be complete by Red day (13th) though? (thus non-engineering build for us to see)
-Alex

Sure hope so... M-X upgrades will be done before then and our customers need something to shoot with!

If you're referring to the ISO threads, for what it's worth, I was toying with the idea of picking up a 5DmkII for its amazing low-light handling, to tide me over till and augment the Scarlet, but after seeing those color chart shots, it's clear it won't have even that over the Scarlet, so I was like, "Meh, what's the point? I'll just rent."

Also for what it's worth (but more along the lines of gushing like a little schoolgirl), I'm grading some shots from an HDX900 right now (love that camera). The idea that in a few months, I'll be able to buy a camera that outperforms it (raw vs. dvcpro (yay more breathing room in Color!), not to mention 3k vs. HD), is lighter and more modular, and is what, 1/6 the cost? is really exciting. And now, 13 stops? Seriously? That's crazy.

I also look forward to updated photos from the new sensor. As a matter of fact, lately I have been reading posts from Reduser to put me in a good mood, because the news is truly mind blowing! Thanks Jim and all of those at Red.

I'd like to publicly thank all the forum-jockeys who couldn't handle being a big boy last time for officially ruining it for the rest of us.

I'm still in shock at how usable the image looked at ISO6400. I'd venture to guess that at ISO3200 the noise level was below that of Kodak 5219. With a mild amount of DNR, ISO6400 could be used for theatrical projection. I've done lots of testing 'push two' with my R1's, and with moderate amounts of DNR we've been able to make ISO1280 usable. The M-X is going to be a game changer for ext night shooting... We had the test body pointing into a hallway at red studios that was quite dark to the human eye, but the M-X saw detail. Its insane. I've avoided any sort of fan boy posting in the past, but I haven't seen anything this exciting in the industry in many, many years.

What is a real surprise, I think, is that this 13 stops + of DR is being attributed to the M-X and not the Monstro.

Thanks for an informative post instead of all that, amazing, congratulations, kick ass bullshit.

I know this is a M-X dynamic range thread but I don't know if its been said yet that the read time on the sensor is double that of the original RED One sensor. Its just a hair slower than film. Ask anyone that was there at the event. Rolling shutter is a thing of the past with this new sensor.

Great point... several people were swinging the camera around on the tripod and all I heard was "ooooooh".

Well when you said double the read speed on the sensor is when I said wow. Along with the no noise high ISO shots. It was a night full of amazing things.

I know it's something that we'll find out soon but when people say that the low light capability of M-X is a game changer what do they mean exactly?

Just so we have a reference point for a comprehensive comparison... Can anyone that attended yesterday say how it compares to the low light capability of 7D?

All i cared about in order to upgrade my RED1 was more dynamic range and better colour so i am already sold but it would be cool to understand how low we can go. :-)
