  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

my EOS "smart" mount...

Currently sold out, this stuff moves fast! I've even sent out some partially
assembled smart mounts as dumb, (if you have gold pins partially installed..)
I put in a massive order last week, but mounts won't get here till the beginning of next week, due to the holidays.
Expect the store to have stock
this coming up weekend and shipping on most likely tuesday of next week.

also I have posted the install procedure in pictures. you can find it here. >LINK<

Thanks for the updates Andy.
Just wanting to find out whether us firsts that put our names down for your smart mount a couple of months ago, are indeed still in line for first shipment? I've not had any confirmation from pms or e-mail sent to you so would be great to know.
Have a very Merry Festive Season and a great 2009!!!
best, joe

We will be sending out e-mails to people who had sent out PM's and expressed interest earlier on. This should happen the beginning of the new year, as there
is going to be a "list" for smart mounts, dumb mounts will continue to ship
on a first-come-first-serve basis, since demand isn't that great. (ofcourse it's still at the mercy of my manufacturer. but streamlining the process now), Happy holidays everyone! and Happy New Year!

-Andy

Well, I showed up to this party late, just found out about this thing yesterday (it was a good Christmas).

Andy, I pm'ed you a request to get on the list for a smart mount. Thought I'd back that up here as I was posting anyway.

After reading this entire thread twice I still have the same question that Rowland asked a while ago and has not yet been directly answered - is this going to be compatible with the Impero? You mentioned bluetooth in the future, but I don't know enough about the Impero to know if that means the two will play nice.

Feel like I'm stating the obvious here, but without some sort of repeatable dial focus knob with witness marks your otherwise awesome-as-hell mount won't be able to nail focus pulls. I can't be the only one who would like it to work pretty much like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceNbZxFnVTw Only, without the part where you wait 3 months after your credit card has been billed and still no word on when the mount will ship (yes, this is my actual current Birger situation).

All that being said, I am very excited for this mount.

thanks,

David

Hope I'm still on the list from back in June! Would still prefer to go Birger, but need an EF mount soon. Thanks.

Third party lens support

Do you think the 'smart' mount will be able to control third party AF lenses (Sigma, Tokina....)?

And a happy new year to everyone.

My mount arrived yesterday, and I am currently working out some back-focussing issues - infinity does not yet quite hit the mark.

Other than that - the mount arrived nicely packaged. You´ll need a T2 screwdriver for the first batch of screws (in case you have the Nikon mount, their tool does not work.) Also, for the second batch of screws you´ll need a PH000 screwdriver. Armed with those and the instructions from Andys website, installation is pretty straight forward.

I´ll post some Contax/Zeiss pics once the backfocus is properly set.

Happy New year to everyone! just to let you know we should have more
"dumb" mounts before the end of the week, the holidays really screwed up
some suppliers. also making more progress on the smart mount, controllers
are being assembled, just waiting on cables, some enclosures. you will have
an option to have various lengths of cable now instead of the hardwired variety
as currently on the control box.

We are still working out some details on the final mount, there were a few issues
with the mount that RED has been advising me on, and working to
get some changes in place. details once we get the new builds in.
(won't affect your upgrades from "dumb" to smart) Just trying to keep making things better.

if you haven't seen, vincent laforet has been shooting with the adapter, and
a monster 800mm canon lens.... he posted some footage here.

also, want to introduce my "up till now silent :shiftyph34r:" partner on the mount, :)
Richard, who will help keep things updated when I can't.

-Andy

Thanks for the update Andy.. and thanks for being so responsive working with my guys on the little tweaks here and there that have come up during testing.

Congrats on the Vincent shoot... millions of eyes will see that one.

Hi Everyone,

As Andy has pointed out i'm going to start speaking up now so I can help out answering questions and keeping people informed of the current situation. Andy's allready updated you on whats going on right now so nothing for me to say about that right now... but what I do have is a FAQ page we put together that can answer all the questions I have been seeing on this thread. you can check it out here if there is anything I missed let me know and I will update it as soon as I can.

Hello, Richard. Welcome to REDUSER. I have a question I didn't see an answer to on your FAQ page. Any plans to make a Nikon smart mount?

Welcome Richard. Can you address Martin Weiss's backfocus issue below?

Welcome Richard. Can you address Martin Weiss's backfocus issue below?

Yes, Martin e-mailed Andy directly and he has addressed his problem. The Mount instructions explain how to fix this problem the web site for that is HERE. This issue was the RED backfocus adjustment was still not adjusted back far enough. Andy hasnt heard back from him yet if he was successful with the new adjustment. but its worked for others that have gotten their mounts.

also to answer Larry's questions we are considering a Nikon smart mount in the future but do not have time to focus on developing it until the canon mount is in full production.

Sweet footage. How much is the 800mm Canon Lens?

Where can I order and approximately how long would delivery delay be if I ordered one today?

First off, that vincent laforet stuff is sick- great stuff

It's been made clear that we can get a dumb mount and then upgrade to a smart later. But I want to be clear on something:

if I get a smart mount, can I upgrade to a pro mount when those are ready?

What's the difference between a "smart mount" and the "pro mount"???

Also, Andy, what on earth do I have to do to get on the mount list???? I've written, begged, emailed. . . perhaps I should try crying????

:-(

I was just reading the FAQ
http://www.wickedcircuits.com/canon_red_faq.html

There are two types of mounts, Dumb and Smart, and two types of controllers,
standard and pro.

The pro controller allows for "pro level focus pulling" and other controllers via bluetooth. The standard controller will work well for most situations and is cheaper and upgradeable to the pro.

I want to get on the list as well.

Just a little heads-up.

Within 22 minutes of me e-mailing Andy, I got an extensive:ninja: reply.

I now got to the point where all lenses > 25mm are fine, and the 25mm lens is fine from f5.6 onwards. I'm sure that I'll get it right in the end. I also ordered two other, different Contax-Canon adapter, to eliminate the chance that this might be the source of problem.

You can see a (quick & dirty) breathing test I did today over at http://visualnary.com/2009/01/07/contax-zeiss-prime-lens-breathing-test-on-red-one.html

It's very possible the adapter is the cause of the problem.

Maybe you could get access to a Canon wide angle lens, and check infinirt focus on that?

I've had good experience with the Fotodiox pro adapters. Link. "Infinity focusing is guaranteed."
