Tagged along with Andrew Walker & his RED MX #127 to do a little night shooting with my Canon k35 T1.4 speeds. We originally shot at 3200ISO but Color is currently limited to 2000ISO. I set ISO to 2000, then turned the EXPOSURE value up a little bit to get somewhere near our original 3200 setting. The more I look at 2000 ISO the more I like it. I'm curious to see what the original M sensor looks like at night, rated at 320 up against the MX at 320. When I lowered the ISO of these night shots down to 320, they looked a lot darker than what I would have imagined the M sensor to look like. One cool thing is I normally would have to shoot a scene like this completely at T1.4 but the new MX allows me to stop down to a 2/2.8 and get noticeably sharper imagery out of my vintage k35s. I happen to like the soft open look of the lenses so kept this whole test all the way open. There is a telephoto shot where we're panning across the skyscrapers, you will notice the light value changing slightly. That is me rocking between T1.4 and T2.8 to see the sharpness changes. There is absolutley ZERO lighting on our subjects face in the opening. He is being lit by the reflection of the fountains bouncing off the building behind us, as well as the inside building lights. There was no key on him at all despite the look. He looks brighter here than he did in real life..

BTW.. right click and save the link rather than watching it in your web browser. FIREFOX on my Mac is showing the file as a lot darker when compared to the QT file.. Anyone know why that is?

Rick,

great shots and I like it.

MX is a new era for all R1 shooters.

It really shows that R1-M-X is right now and it will remain in the future (Epic, Scarlet) like

"the most advanced digital camera system with

the highest dynamic range and sensitivity on the market".

Cool. Why do the cigar embers sometimes glow purple?

Could it be that the color temp. of the key, that is lighting the subject, is shifting everything to one side of the spectrum? In other words, a red-orange amber looks purple because you color balance is shifted to accommodate the water fountain.

Richard looks awesome! do you have any 1080 files uploaded?

curious to see the shots with the structure in the background, and the fountains as the light.. hopefully Andrew throws some more up.

Richard - good to meet you last night. Those K35s are pretty sweet. I love the 55, just a beautiful lens.

I can't believe how lit he looks in this. It didn't look that in real life. The MX sensor is no joke.

Andrew will for sure be throwing up a lot of his stuff. I just hung out for an hour, but he and Brad Webb and a few others were out there for a while. I'm going to upload a 1080 vimeo now.. Will post the link shortly

To give you an idea of how dark it really was, here are some photos I took with my iphone. Obviously the quality of these suck , but you get the idea (i have yet to send my iphone into Red for it's MX sensor upgrade :001_tt2:). It was dark, and everything was shot using only ambient light.

One request if you guys go out shooting again if it is possible. Can you capture some footage at 2k crop? I would love to see how the sensitivity and noise hold up over the smaller sensor area. Might give some indication of what to expect with the 2/3".

alex, you throwing up some of those stills from the 5D?

Thanks guys!

Looking forward to more clips, those are very cool, i cant wait to shoot on it

Cool. Why do the cigar embers sometimes glow purple?

from my experience this is a pure Infra Red issue... at least on M sensor :

I've noticed that if you are quite close to a heat source and the scene light is very low you'll get that blue/purple cigarette FX.

a hot mirror filter always took care of the problem for me.

I'll post some of the footage I have when I get back home tonight. I'll also try and post some R3Ds because this time around I shot some that were short enough to post. I also shot some timelapse of that location.
