Monkey Extract Questions

How do I make a simple EDL from AVID DNxHD Quicktimes from Red Camera

How do I make a simple EDL from AVID DNxHD Quicktimes from Red Camera

have to go to a Color Correct session tommorow..........

I have my Edit in Avid on my timeline .......

The source files are Avid DNxHD Wrapped Quicktimes in my Avid Box ..... This is what I imported when I started the Project ...... I assume they were made from the R3D files from the Red Camera ........

How do I make an EDL using Monkey Extract there are no Directions ............. or Can I just use Avid EDL manager .....

What do I have it point to in the file path to simply make an EDL of my edit ........ Do I point it to my Bin where the Edit is ?

Please Help

Craig - when will Rubber Monkey take advantage of RED Rocket™™ to speed up conversions, et al?

It's such a pleasure using your software.

Scott

Monkey Extract uses redline to render. To get rocket support we need to either use a RED Rocket™ enabled version of Redline from RED or write our own rendering engine with the SDK (which will happen eventually regardless, but is a long way off at the moment).

I've asked for an ETA on the rocket enabled redline but haven't yet received a response... I'm not sure how much of a priority this is for them as they seem to be awfully busy with redcine-x.

Cheers

Hi Zach,

You just use the EDL manager in Media Composer.
You can also export a Filmscribe XML and use that.

The biggest problem people have when using Avid is when they drag R3D proxies straight into Avid and cut them directly. If you do this you will lose all the timecode information.

If you have created DNxHD quicktime with ALE files and cut those in Media Composer then the timeocode information should be intact... simply generate a CMX3600 EDL or Red16 template EDL from EDL manager and import it into Monkey Extract.

If you have any trouble then please send your EDL and the monkeybase.dat file from the directory you specified as "R3D Source Directory" in monkey extract to support@rubbermonkey.co.nz. I'll take a look at the files and see if I can figure out where you are going wrong.

Cheers

I've been using ME lately to hand TIFF sequences to our VFX guys. They have issues matching the sequence back together as the XML isn't much use to them. The problem is due to the same R3D clip being used several times in an edit sequence. i.e. shot 3 and shot 15 can end up in the same folder making things very confusion.

In Redcine there's an option to use Shot number as a folder identifier. Is this possible in ME? I've been through the help and couldn't find an identifier that was unique to the placement of a shot within a sequence.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan,

You can use a custom folder name to achieve something similar (although it is not strictly by shot number). Just add:

[SequenceId]

to your custom folder name and it will create a unique folder for each shot.

e.g. if you use a custom folder name of /[Reel Id]_C[Clip]/S[SequenceId] you'll get a folder structure like .../A001_C003/S001/...

Monkey Extract compatibility issues

Monkey Extract compatibility issues

Some users may have had problems with the 3.011 release on certain versions of Mac OS. This has been patched up now :)

If you have downloaded this over the last week and been unable to use it, the latest version (3.012) contains a fix. Please download this version and give it a try.

Cheers

Hello Craig,

I have to go back and process pre build20 footage from re-take shoot and I have to match the rendering to the older clips. Is the any toggle to flip the old and new color science? Or should I use the pre-build 20 compatible version of Monkey Extract for this?

Also, I'm running into issues that some clips are not rendering because of file not found error in batch rendering. This is with using FCP XML. Any critical points I should be aware of?

Edit:this seems to happen only on the Qmaster rendering.

Hi Kaku,

If someone plugs in a node into your render farm that cannot see the shared paths you are using then you'll start getting the file not found error. Please ensure that all of the nodes on your network can see both your source & destination paths exactly over the network. If this is all good then you should never see a file not found.

Redline does not (to my knowledge) have any color science options... it just renders what it finds. Changing Monkey Extract versions will change nothing... you may need to install different Red Alert versions if you have having trouble with color science.

Monkey Extract stability in multi-threaded versions.

Monkey Extract stability in multi-threaded versions.

Hi all,

Some have been having trouble with render speed in the multi-threaded versions of Monkey Extract.

After running a bunch of tests it seems that the default settings for "Processors" or "Render Threads" had been set too high. This bogs down the system and significantly slows render speeds.

The current default is for one redline instance per CPU core. however I get the fastest render speeds with the procs setting set to 3 or 4 render threads on an 8-core mac pro.

If you are having issues with your system getting bogged down on versions 3.012 or above then please try dropping this setting down to 2 and then easing it up until the render speed stops increasing and/or your CPU total hits 100% in activity monitor.

If you are still having problems at "2 procs/threads" then please email me at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and I'll look into it.

The default has been set to 3 on the new version (3.014). 3 threads works fine on my macbook pro (dual core) and also hits 95% CPU on my 8-core mac pro, so it should be a good starting point.

Unfortunately some users were still having issues with their render speeds.

I have just updated to version 3.100.
This version allows users to separately set both the number of procs per thread and the total number of simultaneous render threads. This will give everyone more flexibility to tune Monkey Extract to their own hardware and workload.

Cheers

Just finished a conform to DPX from FCP EDL. The render wasnt successful, although the software said so in the end. The thing was that I ran out of hard drive space during the 8 hour render. That's not M.E.'s fault, I get that, but the software shouldn't give me a thumbs up at the end, all bars green etc... So I rendered again. This time noting how many frames M.E. said would be rendered. At the end, it was successful, but the number of files in the output folder did not match what I'd noted. Again, I'm given a thumbs up where clearly something has gone wrong. Or is this normal? Any other reason why these numbers dont add up?
Craig, maybe this is something to look into.
Other than that, I'm digging the software! Keep up the good work.

didnt read the hole thread...

Craig, do you know if rocket support is on the road ?

thx

I'm not sure what is happening with your frame counts.

You are quite correct that Monkey Extract does not realize that the hard drive has filled. Unfortunately redline reports success when the hard drive fills up and Monkey Extract thinks that everything is fine. It looks like we need to build something that verifies that redline has successfully written the frames that have been rendered.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Hi Rainer

We have begun writing our own render software (with rocket support) using the SDK so it will happen however I wouldn't expect this anytime soon. We have had no news from RED yet regarding a rocket enabled version of redline.

I've come to the conclusion that the frame count differences are caused by clips used more than once in the edl timeline. ME count frames for every clip in the EDL, not the actual frames it needs to render. It's a good thing, though, that ME doesn't double up on dpx's. Not sure if ME actually renders again and overwrites, or just skips frames already rendered?

We are currently editing a feature film shot on the RED. Here is our workflow.

1) Shoot 4KHD 23.98fps
2) Transcode to ProRes
3) Edit with ProRes files in FCP

We will grade in Color with the R3D files. I understand that Monkey Extract will allow me to copy just the R3D files used in the film to another drive based on an EDL exported from FCP.

There is a "footage timecode" option in the "Copy RED footage" section for Edgecode or Time of Day. Does Monkey Extract find the R3Ds based on filenames or based on timecode? How does it not get confused by overlapping TOD on multiple clips?
