  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monitoring via DeckLink and HDLink using EIZO monitors

Yes, I have. That has allowed me to get picture via HDMI with adapter to DVI, but with PINK image. But no results with DisplayPort. Just black image. And I have tried several cables. DVI is not an option since is only 8 bit., so I am aiming to get the DP to work due to its bit depth capabilities.

I got two different Eizos, both both are fed with DVI from Flames.

Just so I understand, what is the path you use. from computer to screen?

I am getting the Resolve signal from the DeckLink HD-SDI to a HDLink with DisplayPort output. My goal is to use a DP cable to funnel the signal from the HDLink to the EIZO DP input.

Thanks!

Ok, No I only use them with DVI in and with the HD+ resolution, so I do not know how it works with the dp cable. I would call Eizo.

Oh, good. The only downside is that you can only monitor your images at 8 bit depth due to DV limitations.

Thanks for your time!

OK, your biggest issue and limitation is that you bought a "computer monitor" to use as a "video reference display". Sure the specs and performance of your Eizo are impressive for the price. But that being said, because it doesn't have a proper HD-SDI input it will most likely fail to impress as a "critical evaluation display". The Eizo's were/are designed for stills/print not video. Don't believe the hype, or the specs. I use a NEC PA241W as a GUI / secondary reference display. The NECs performance on paper is very close to your Eizo's. I feed my NEC via DVI. My NEC also has a rec709 emulation. It's actually very, very good for a $1000 monitor. But up against my old Cine-tal or my new Sony E250As there's no contest.

BTW: your Eizo was most likely designed to be used via DisplayPort directly out of a computer to reference stills via Photoshop etc. Trying to feed it a HD-SDI signal converted to DP or DVI is counter-intuitive. Also, the HD Link is a fantastic piece of gear for the price but it will not give you consistent, dependable, color-accurate results.

If you're looking for an inexpensive video reference display I'd suggest checking out Flander's line or looking at this year's or last year's Panasonic Plasmas (though you'll need to get the Panny properly calibrated).

Interesting perspective, Adrian. However, Red Japan ( http://www.eizo.com/na/solutions/casestudies/red_digital_japan/index.html ) is using the next size of the same monitor series (CG276) for displaying the images acquired by their cameras. And also they are using the same method: getting images from HD-SDI converted to DisplayPort.

Do not know, from a glance review of the specs, if aside of the obvious size/resolution, they have such a big difference that will make my 22" model unusable. If anyone spot any big difference, please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

Well according to the link you provided they are using a different monitor with an additional graphic board capable of "4Kx2K Display Conversion". The article also states that they are supposedly using a 4K SDI output that is then being scaled down and converted to DisplayPort via the FDH3601 and CG276. The 4K SDI output card (like the Decklink 4K Extreme) is as expensive as your monitor.

And though they are using a monitor within the same series the Eizo CG276 is twice as expensive and includes an HDMI input.

Adrian,

I have the same card. So, based on the specs, what would HDMI will do that DP cannot? Based on my conversation with Black Magic Design Support nothing, since the card will supply via HD-DSI 10 bit images, both as RGB and YUV, and the monitor will select which type of signal will use.

Also, the HDLink, which is the method used to transform the signal from HD-SDI to DP, does the same thing (10 bit RGB/YUV), so the monitor also decides which will use. Furthermore, the HDMI that also is provided by BMD with the DeckLink, only provides 8 bit images (both RGB/YUV), so it will be the same as using it with a DV input.

Interesting situation, specially that it is being trusted by Red to show their moving images with the same response time/delay.

EDIT: The HDMI of the big monitor is only 8 bit (256 tones), same as DV.

LO: I hear what you're saying. The specs say it should work. I get it. But sometimes specs don't always pan out.

I'd suggest getting in touch with Eizo and giving them your other hardware specs (Decklink 4K and HD Link) and let them decide if your hardware will pass a proper input signal to your monitor. Otherwise it could be a bad HD Link. I had a NFG HD Link on set yesterday. Guess what the problem was? Everything was tinted pink. My assistant figured out the HD Link link needed a firmware update.

Already done.

Don't know what to tell ya. My only other suggestion would be to ask Eizo directly what specific brand/model of 1080 video output card they have successfully used to send a 10-bit video signal to your model monitor via DisplayPort.

And again, just my 2 cents, I've never heard of anyone using DisplayPort as a trusted signal source for color critical evaluation in rec709 or P3 spaces.

The story is long, but the only reason we are using today HDMI and not DP is because how cheap the manufacturing of HDMI connectors (I & O) and cables were compared to the DP. If you compare the DP and HDMI initial specs ( 10-12 bit vs 8 bit, and the # of audio channels), you will be asking: why, why, why? And the answer is only one: CHEAPER, CHEAPER, CHEAPER. If price would have not been an issue, today the DisplayPort will be the predominant and preferred connection after the HD-SDI one.

Again, the story is too long, but as a summary, money talks.

Thanks,

I got an Eizo CG275W (2560 x 1440) sitting here that I've been meaning to hook up as well via DP and check it's performance as a grading solution...

I'll probably try a dedicated DP graphic card...

Luis, u probably already know, don't use the HDLink with 3D LUT's... it has issues... if u need to calibrate the Eizo, Lightspace can now directly upload 3D LUT's into the Eizos (check if your specific model is supported), so u can avoid all the .icm stuff...

the HD Links have issues, so it might be that u have a faulty one...

the CG223W has DisplayPort Version 1.1a... maybe the HD Link has an issue with that...

did u verify in any way that the HD Link is actually working, like trying the HD Link DP connection with another monitor ?

BMD is going to send me a new one. And, yes, I only use my HDLink for conversion, which NEVER has failed me. A dedicated DP graphic card is not a solution since you only can monitor Resolve images thought the DeckLink or HDLink to convert the signal to DP or HDMI. BTW, the HDMI that comes with the DeckLink provides an 8 bit signal, so that is not an option.

NOTE:

Just to clarify comments previously made by fellow redusers re: computer monitors and other monitors; both BMD cards send RGB/YUV signals simultaneously and the monitor select the signal that it can process. As I mentioned before, Japan Red is using EIZOS to show off the Red footage.

Everyone,

I just want to express my deepest gratitude on the time you have spent to help me on this. I strongly believe that this is EXACTLY the purpose of this cybercommunity: to learn from each other, and to offer your knowledge to your fellow redusers.

Thanks!!!

Just wanted to throw in there that I have indeed gotten this style of workflow up and running with an HP Dreamcolor. Computer monitors are certainly not the right move for this kind of signal work but since figuring it out, I've been happy with the results.

I set it up like this:

Resolve > Decklink 3D Extreme > HDSDI Cable > HDLINK DisplayPort 3D > DisplayPort Cable > HP Dreamcolor

I see your issues coming from any number of places in the chain - This kind of thing is a mess! I wish you the best...
