  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Modular Dragon OLPF sneak peak

All great news. Amazing how lemons turn to lemonade.

Regarding the old OLPF - is there a way to make an additional OLPF that just takes from the highs to give to the lows BUT leaves the colours closer to the 2nd OLPF? Does that extra stops at the bottom (taken from the top) really have to loose colour fidelity throughout the whole picture?

Effectively fine tune a "new" release of the OLD OLPF starting with the best colour to achieve better low light response.

So short question - could the OLD OLPF be made more colour effective now that the idea of multiple OLPF`s is a deliberate move?

The user interchangeable OLPF is great news indeed.

Question.... Does making the change require removing the lens mount first
before you can change the OLPF?

If you drop a screw during the procedure could the screw end up bouncing
off the sensor etc. causing damage?

Great news guys.

Is it possible that the new OLFPs have the best of both the 1st version and 2nd version. One that protects the highlights and skin tones whilst not creating so much noise at higher ISOs?

Common... Surely I'm not the only person who'd like this :-)

Just thought I would give people a sneak peek on the Modular OLPF thats going to be available for Dragon soon.

...

There will be 2 modules available out of the gate obviously (the new OLPF and the OLD OLPF) and IR PASS, ND, Clear and a few specialty ones will come after.

I don't have any problem with the new OLPF at all, but I live the idea of interchangeable ones. Especially clear (for experimantal situaations I haven't thought of yet) and ND to lighten up the camera for all-exterion shoots.

Options. I love that Red is all about options.

Bravo!

Oh Snap!! . . . it in ;-)

would be be cool to have a open source calibration component for those who want to experiment with the Clear or custom made filters Probably like asking Apple to open up the iPhone iOS but would be fun to play with creative hacks and this new very cool feature

Cheers RED Engineering!!

Be nice if you could just slide it in like a 'film slide' and pop out as simple as putting in/out a matte box filter. I know nothing about the technology. Just saying it would be cool if it just slides in and out the olpf. Might not be possible but just thought I'd throw in the thought.

Jarred, just got two weeks ago the upgrade email, and got my financing ready today. Have been following the OLPF situation, and since I am about to send in my camera, I really need to know what OLPF I should put in my camera! :) .

My question is simple: having seen the new tests posted with New OLPF Dragon vs old MX, where MX performs better, will this new firmware and Redcine X build make it at the same level as MX for low light? I'm happy with MX low light performance. However, its really on the limit for me. Or will I be better served with the Old OLPF? I'm planning to use the camera for Motorsports, as you know, as well as short films/documentaries. Often I shoot with very high shutter speeds for the slow motion shots, and often need to crank up iso to 1280 in my MX. I love my Epic and what I get out of it for both fiction and Motorsports/documentary. Its the best camera I ever owned. I'm definitely upgrading, just don't know which one to get right now!

Oh yea! Your in the sweet spot my fire extinguishing chief!

I'll order the LOW LIGHT one.

There still people that prefer the old OLPF because even though skintones and highlight protection isn't as good as the new OLPF, they want a noise free image at higher ISOs that the old OLPF gives you by letting in more light. We of course will put whichever OLPF you want in your camera now... but the new OLPF module will make things alot easier to change.

The freedom and flexibility to make that kind of decision in different environments should be beneficial to everyone.. even if they only make the choice once and never change it again.

The Module install is pretty straight forward... we can do it or you can do it. Getting the old stuff out is the hardest part. The new "module" goes in easy and 4 little bolts and you are done. You dont need to touch any glass and you dont need to worry about putting it upside down or right side left. The front of the module is marked so you can see which one it is by just looking at the sensor so rental customers can quickly see which one is in camera.

At any rate... we are testing prototypes now and I expect these to be ready in 6-8 weeks after we get out of tooling. The OLPF Modules will be for sale in the store so you can choose whichever one you want or all of them and change at will. If you want to keep whatever OLPF you have in your camera right now you can still send us your camera and we can transfer your OLPF into a new module and send it back to you.

Creating lens and filter coating is very interesting and a bit like magic. I have a friend that have made special custom coatings for military for 30 years and all he have is a small gas-heat chamber the size of a washing machine. But how you apply the different gas and temp is like cooking. A set of fine tuned sensor filter is hi up on my want-to-have list.

- Low light
- Hi light
- Clear
- Low con
- IR pass
- Anti laser
- Under water
- Tunes to match Alexa
- Tunes to match F65
...

Even maybe scales how strong the different coatings are and "blurring effect" a OLPF have like Gaussian 1,3 and scale how strong anti reflecting.
Then a sensor filter can be described for some nice fine tuning:
AR0,9 + IR9 + G1,3 + LC

All great news. Amazing how lemons turn to lemonade.

So impressed with RED's engineering right now. The modularity of these OLPS is going to open countless new creative doors.

Speaks volumes about RED, their passion, and their commitment to new ideas.

Just out of curiosity, a clear OLPF would mean the benefit of better low end, less in the highs, and better sharpness? But this also has the potential for Moire and Aliasing correct?
