  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mike Seymour

It doesn't sound like you ran a timed test, but just to be clear are you saying you think their charge will last about 30 minutes continuous 5k 24fps recording? And do you have a rough idea of how long it takes for them to charge from empty? Thanks, and sorry if it feels like I am prying for details. :)

Hey Mike, just wanted to drop by and say I really enjoyed your review of the Epic on FX Guide TV.

If the intention was to make it like a Top Gear review you totally nailed it.

Anecdotally yes its about 25/30 minutes tho obviously Rob its dependent on what we're shooting, FPS / HDRx etc. The take out as mike says is your gonna want a few of them. Once you run with an inboard battery that adds very little weght, going back to V lock / red bricks on a camera this size gets hard to take. I think for the average run and gun day (with access to charger throughout the day) 6 batteries in your kit would be comfortable. more would be lovely :-)

Remember these suckers are small!, 30 minutes is really pretty impressive!

Yes it was designed to be exactly that - I asked Stu to make a segment in the style of top gear - since it was not intended as a hard core technical evaluation but we wanted to include a lot of epic footage - shot on the EPIC... cool shots hopefully from a range of set ups :-)

Our experience is not a 'technical' evaluation but more of a user perspective but ... we love the VOLTS. We adore the volts... they free up the camera... we shot on them all week. For example 3ality let us shoot their handicapped basketball game which they were showing LIVE in stereo. Being able to jump around and lie on the ground etc to get action shots - with an 'imax' camera - was totally INSANE.
The volts are just batteries but as part of the package they add up to a wonderful option for a whole new style of red filming - such as we could just not do on the Red One

Mike

Mike, that's great to know! Thanks for sharing. I'm curious about the RedVolt charger in terms of the size, how quickly they charge the batteries, and how many can be charged at once? I suppose things could still be too preliminary to share though...

Yeah I dont have a final re-charger,- so mine is not a good guide but mine charges 4 at once, and works well... but it is NOT a production unit.

Open Question:

We have been shooting a lot of EPIC tests but is there something you guys would like to see?

Is there something you feel you would like to see with the EPIC to test anything you feel is under -represented?
Just curious - and no promises of course...

What would you like to see ? (- other than an FEDEX truck arriving at your house with an EPIC)

(I am not really interested right now in filming soft porn chick shots in the studio - I will say that right up front !!)
:-)

Mike

I see. Thanks for the replies. So it seems Red Volts aren't a quantum leap in technology, as Red is doing in most other areas, but they are working solidly and that is all anyone could ask for. We are lucky that Red decided to go there and provide something unprecedented in terms of size and weight. It would have been unattainable without the little RedVOLTS.

This is very generous of you Mike. Thanks for putting it out there. I personally would love to see some more HDRx examples that better showcase the unique Magic Motion artifacts that HDRx creates. The "impossible shot" that you guys posted was amazing, and it definitely had a different "feel" to it, especially in the motion blur of the passing cars and overhead tunnel lights. However, as HDRx is constantly improving, this may be a test that you'd want to wait longer on before scrutinizing the footage?

Also, footage aside, I'm very interested in more videos showcasing the ability of the camera to scale in different situations. (i.e. different configurations, demonstrations of using modules) that kind of stuff... Thanks for the consideration!

Thank you so much for making this offer Mike. I love the gorgeous footage you have put out with the Epic.

I would love to see an Hdrx, with a dark skinned subject shot against a bright sky with the sun behind the subject.

Purely as an academic exercise, I'd like to see a rolling shutter test. I haven't been able to perceive any rolling shutter in the footage people posted, but it'd be nice to see a direct comparison. If you get around to it, thanks, Mike.

Sure we will see what we can do.. generally HDRx is now my passion - this is where I will be unless told otherwise !!! We shot some great HDRx already but the post process is new and evolving.
So great ideas so far - please send more if you would like.

Mike

Mike is one of the few that has access to Graeme's Magic HDRx algorithms. It isn't yet in RCX.

I really cannot understand why. :P

A lot of the HDRx we've seen so far has been used like in the music video example, where the talent/subject is exposed in a normal dynamic range and the HDRx is just used to save the background or something along those lines.

I'd like to see more actual HDR photography, by which I mean work where extended dynamic range is utilized on the subject itself.

Wow Mike ... of all the M threads, you are killing it (good thing) in terms of activity. Just a constant stream of cool stuff. Thanks for sharing and contributing so much and bummed I didn't get a chance to meet you at NAB.
