Michael Bravin Charged with email hacking!

Huh?...

Anybody who has seen an episode of Law & Order can predict that if M. Bravin has plead out to a lessor charge, then there are some bigger fish that are about to fry.

Law and order is fiction. This ain't.

Re read what Joseph wrote. Re read my answer. And then put your thinking cap on.

The point is more that tying this to a theft of a camera in France starts to suggest a wide conspiracy and can implicate many people.

Throwing around ideas and (most likely false) accusations or drawing connections based on (I had a feeling about that) is dangerous behavior for anyone here to engage in which could cause damage to other people or worse be the starting point for defamation law suits.

This is a juicy story, no doubt, but playing private eye in public around legal issues is at best unhealthy.
But in the end people are free to yap all they want, and they will.

David

KANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how perfect considering he's from the Command and Conquer games.

KANE!!!!

...
No, I have nothing intelligent to add to the discussion - but who would've thought Joe Kucan's picture would turn up on REDUser in this kind of thread?! Oh, and I'm sure he could play a pissed off Jim perfectly seeing as how he plays a pissed off Kane really really well =)

You have to be careful when you don't know all the facts...quick response by ARRI to GIZMODO

it gets uglier by the second...

"This is an absolutely wrong statement and I request that this article will be retracted or corrected.

Our company ARRI is not, and has never been part of the investigation. Michael Bravin acted alone and on his own initiative.

ARRI has a long history of quality, service and integrity in the motion picture industry.

I would ask you to give this issue immediate attention."
------------------------

Some start to make a case in their minds already without all the fact...very, very dangerous.

Yes it sucks...just be a bystander if you can't add any meaningful help to the situation.

From Deadline...

"Industry veteran Michael Bravin admitted today that while working for German film and TV camera powerhouse ARRI he hacked into the files of LA-based rival Band Pro Film and Digital, where he had worked for 15 years. Bravin, who moved to ARRI as VP market development in 2010, pleaded guilty to using the name and password of CEO and president Amnon Band to access files used in interstate commerce. Emails from several industry firms were accessed during the hacking, including those of Red Digital Cinema founder Jim Jannard..."

If this comes down to... I AM READY TO SHOW MY LOYALTY... and SALE OFF every piece of gear I own of ARRI, including my most absolute BELOVED GLASS...
The Master Primes... along with all other ARRI gear...

Very few people - and I suspect none of us, are in a position to know how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Was it simply one man who abused his position of trust for personal gain?
Or did his superiors direct him?
If they too were in the dark at first, what actions did they take upon discovery?
Was the integrity of the entire company compromised by one man or was there a core problem with ethics there to begin with?
There are far too many questions yet to be answered. A lot of blanks to fill in. So far, we know only of the actions of one man. It might be far worse - time will tell.

As a cautionary statement: Speculation is dangerous. I have not yet seen anything that implicates ARRI as a partner in this crime.

Those MP's are great tools - perhaps the best revenge for now it to create more fantastic images using what they cannot produce - an EPIC.

Ketch, if you don't mind, share some recent work. Those girls can soothe the soul.

Edit: Seems that there is some movement out there responding to this news. That is the right course of action. As this subject works it's way through to full disclosure, let's get back to making films. Might be why someone invented lawyers.

Good advice for the average REDUSER member. But after two deades in what can best be described as forensic accounting, including a decade as an analyst/verifier for the US government, and having a a very large record of success in catching corporations forging documents and lying, I am not the average forum user. And as long as I don't name any names, defamation/libel are not an issue.

Oh and, while Law & Order is indeed fiction, its tagline is that its stories are ripped from today's headlines. Maybe instead of a feature, this story will show up in an upcoming episode (cue L&O sound effect).

Notice that the illegal activity occured for about 6 months, but the plea is only for a single incident on Jan 19th. If the US attorney didn't have a clear case, Bravin would not have plead out to even a single charge. The writing on the wall is a clear indication of a larger deal for bigger fish; especially when you consider Jim's remarks.

Ha, this is Joe Kucan. He is a friend of mine. He would do it!

Unfortunately, nothing gets made these days without a big gun on the marquee.

If Hollywood was funding the entire film Jim would be played by:

If funding had to come from the Church of Scientology:

If we hadn't waited so damn long to make the movie:

Business is war by another name. Choose your weapons carefully as some may blow up in your face. Having the best product out there is probably the best weapon to have.

@Michael

So we agree that the average Reduser has been given good advice.

You have a different perspective based on you past.

Law and order is a great series.

Agreed Brian,

however, mine is not a show of Loyalty based on pure speculations or assumptions, rater a clear stand in support of Jim and RED!

I said that if asked, meaning if ARRI was here truly to be blamed for actions taken by one of their people against Jim and RED, then I would show my support and not hesitate to take action.

I do have the deepest respect for ARRI, however if they were to be directly responsible for this, then all of that of which I had for them will be gone!!

I am a Man of Respect, Honor and Integrity, and this would not fly in my book, and I would fill not good at all to support such company, and I would not want to own anything of theirs.

Do I hope that this was a PERSON's act, and not DRIVEN by ARRI? Yes, of course I do, but... If they are the driving force behind this events... Well, as I said, I am ready to show how REAL my LOYALTY for Jim and RED is!!

As far as GIRLS... Plenty of those coming from our Temporary facility about to Open in Milan, Italy, and if the Master Primes, go, there will be other glass to replace them, as good or better... ;)

i think it should be a comedy and david cross should play jim's part :)

+ a zillion!

Huh? Just the opposite. When you think it through it really starts to make sense. In fact, my immediate and only thought when that camera was stolen was corporate espionage; it was only a question of whether it was a Japanese or German company.

It's a huge leap to go from illegally reading someone else's email to hiring alpine ninjas to break into a secluded mountain cabin.

Should we blame Bravin for the Tsunami in Japan too? I mean, this is a huge invasion of privacy but I'm not ready to blame famine and plague on the guy.

Still, it is plausible. So I think we must explore this possibility for the sake of the storyline for the upcoming movie. :-()

Really Gavin? You own Straightface Studios and, with a straight face, can equate linking two potential acts of corporate espionage to linking an individual to an "Act of God"? Really?

Your comment is the very definition of hyperbole.

I never heard what happened to that first EPIC. Did that crime ever get solved?

Arri does not directly have to be invovled to be involved. If Bravin acted totally alone, fine enough harm done let's bury it.

But here is the problem, like stealling stolen property (which can have legal consequences), if ARRI got dates of future RED tech, insider knowledge of roadmaps etc., passed from Bravin (not knowing it was hacked) but still accepting info that any reasonable person would have to ask how the info was gained, than plausible deniability could start to be a hard defense.

Let's put it simple, even though ARRI did not ask Bravin to do what he did, if ARRI did materially benefit in insider secret knowledge, even indirectly, and not question how such great competitive info was sourced this is a problem.

I really tire of all these companies claiming it was a rogue employee of late; never being force to accept consequences for having such a person so high up in the food chain.

The worst off thing, is I feel this has sort tied Jim's hand in having to respond. I mean they gave him no choice.

But again I hope this is all just something simple as Bravin simply feeling burnt by Mr. Band... and doing an extremely stupid, stupid thing.

Seriously Michael Bravin W...T...F!!!

To be fair Michael wasn't naming responsible individuals or even a single company, he was merely discussing motive and who had the most to gain from the theft. As he said, it is reasonable to consider. I would add that failing to consider the possibility is naive. It would also be naive to ignore the possibility that when a company hires an executive of the competition, that they may do so with hopes of benefiting in a manner that goes beyond the job description.

I'm not advocating jumping to conclusions and spouting bile and I doubt Michael is either.

Thanks for responding Ketch - to be clear, I have no disagreement with your thoughts or motivations. No question at all. Your post simply inspired me to share some thoughts I had one layer below my earlier post. I think all of us have been disgusted with this news and unfortunately, we know it isn't over.

I know that you always speak from the heart and you bring as much passion to RedUser as you do to the art.
Keep that approach intact.
