  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MEET FELIX....

Mario Testino. Erm. Sort of.

Sorry to bother you guys, but I tried all 3 of the Windows versions (64 and 32bit), but every time I try to open the clip, REDCINE-X crashes. Any suggestions? Am I missing something? So excited to finally see this... so close, yet...

I'm getting the same thing, though the driver crashing is my video card, so I doubt its REDs fault...

Could some kind soul point out links to an explanation of what you do when you grade?

I can see it's about color temperature and brightness/contrast, and maybe a few more parameters, but it would be nice to see a bit more detail about the process and how it's supposed to work.

I come from the age of plain old video cameras so this will be new to me when I get my Scarlet Fixed, and I have a hunch I'm not the only one who's trying to absorb the implications of using RAW and how it works.

Thanks!

D

The real difference is the amount of flexibility that is granted. The ability to adjust the ISO and the colour temperature, without pushing the image in any real way. Which then allows you more freedom to push it in the latter part of the primary or secondary stage. How much you can push an image is still determined by what is available in the scene but you have more latitude to what you can do.

How to grade is too big a subject to get into on in a thread, so if you are looking at getting your head into it properly, google the basics and get a book like this one before you get your Scarlet

from my wife tonight: "working late again tonight honey?" ...

I'm lucky to have a patient wife :-) She actually likes when I'm jazzed about what I do.

Clearly you and Jim are also so blessed.

Life is good,

Steve

I am equally blessed, my wife and I are partners in our prodco.

Is this a sneak peek at Steve Job's new Lion?

Please tell me it is and that he is fixing the gamma issues for you???

I don't think that kitty would put up with the gamma shifts we have been.....

Figured I'd take a stab...
Based off of the style I'm grading my current project in:

There's various ways you can approach it and I don't think any one method is more "right" than another. Some basics do help though. First establish your white point and base exposure level. Then you can expand your image with contrast or saturation controls, tweak the curve by pulling control points. I would recommend working with the Redcolor2 and Redgamma2 settings to start. Redlogfilm gives a much flatter gamma curve to start with, some people prefer to start that way. With this particular clip, you don't need to tweak the white balance or exposure much. Work from top to bottom in the color controls, although you may find that you will jump down to the curve control before you start tweaking saturation, color channel gain, etc..

I've played with it off and on since Jarred posted. For some reason, I keep coming back to this one look...

This info is very helpful. Thanks Jeff!

And your grade is fantastic! Really, really nice.

I'm sure you're aware though that pushing to higher ISO can only be taken on a case by case basis on what is useable or not. It depends obviously on the ambient lighting, the texture and depth of the scene and available information. At higher ISO you expect noise but its whether the amount of noise is either pleasing to see or adds texture to the shot.

Shallow DOF whores are only going to be happy with big sensors there is no way around that and they will moan continously. It will be a far cry from 1\3" video though and in my experience 2/3" has much more of a naturally pleasing fall off. A pity so many people with HDSLR's don't have the ability to smoothly pull focus or seem to be completely incapable of keeping it in focus.

Welcome to Reduser - I 100% agree. Shallow focus, much like Streak filters, needs to be used judiciously, not just mindlessly slapped on.

I'm curious about the light - is that a Brieze?

nope.. good old array of various 40 year old Mole Tungsten lights ( allwith 1/4 CTB )

had about 20,000 watts lighting Felix to ramp up to 96fps.

I have completely abandoned generating anything in Quicktime for the near future till the Gamma is fixed across the majority of computers.. Even PRORES files now you need to roll the dice to know if it will have proper gamma form computer to computer. Hence the Mp4s i posted here. So dumb.

Funny.. I found myself on Sorrenson Squeeze's website last night for the first time in probably 10 years...

Does that mean you used some pretty serious ND on the Scarlet footage? Are we seeing the built-in filter in action?

What's with the purple cast on almost everything below the midtones? It's evident in just about everyone's grade.

Not sure if I'm seeing what you're talking about. There does seem to be a slight purple quality to the light on the left side of the image. Perhaps a fill with a different gel on it? It was also mentioned that this is using the color science for the Epic. It hasn't been tuned for Scarlet yet. That might make a difference. As you said, it's not in every grade, so it's certainly not something you're stuck with.

This is early Scarlet sensor calibration and Scarlet footage forced through the EPIC color science. It showcases how close they are, but not exact. It also shows the danger we face posting stuff like this before it is completely done. We are close... but still have some tweaks to do. As long as everyone understands it and doesn't try to pick it apart, we'll continue to post images through development. If we get too many pixel peepers, we'll just hold back until everything is done.

Quite frankly, if I were a Scarlet customer I would be pretty happy right now.

Jim
