  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MEET FELIX....

Beautiful footage with a lot of "meat" to grade. Doesn't it seem extremely soft for a 3k image though? I know there is a bayer sensor at work but it seems surprisingly soft to me. Any thoughts? I am not a troll in any way shape or form. Just asking an honest question.

Are you referring to the R3D or the images in the thread?

To the R3D file opened up in the 32 bit version of REDCINE-X that Jarred just posted. I am viewing this on a new model imac 1920x1080. I am looking at it both as HxV fit to screen on full (so that it would benefit from the smaller screen size and appear sharper pixel for pixel) and also at 100% crop on full. It seems lovely but very very soft for a native 3k R3D file.

Make sure the resolution is set to full to see all of the detail, my macbook automatically sets it to 1/8 resolution which makes it look soft which is probably what your imac is doing...but it may not playback too well in full resolution. mine doesn't

Sorry I forgot to post that I did make sure it was on full. Viewing specs updated in my last post. Anyone else feel this way? I'd love to find out that I've doing it wrong but it seems like everything is set up right. I could post a screen shot. I do not want to artificially alter the thread though. Maybe I'll start one under the scarlet section.

Nah man, is cool dude. Although there is a fair bit of motion blur in the movement it looks relatively nice and sharp to me when I was viewing it earlier. Looking at the fur on Felix's shoulder.

On a side note I had a play too...

It's as expected to me, comparing it to the native resolution of all other RED footage I've seen. I find the leg of chicken and Felix's shoulder to be the most in-focus objects in the scene. Felix's face is a little out of focus up until he bites the chicken, but at that point there's a lot of motion blur.

Moving on, here's my grading attempt (all REDCINE-X, no photoshop)...

As far as I know there aren't any Scarlet customers yet, but if you want to PM me a link with a hidden URL where I can place an order then I'd be happy to do that ;-)

I'm curious about what monitors people are using to grade this footage and if they're calibrated. I used an Apple 30" Cinema Display (matte) and didn't see the purple cast at all. However, I can see it on a 20" aluminum iMac (glossy). The thing is, the color red on the reduser web page looks too bright and saturated on the iMac, so I don't think it's displaying properly. If I recall correctly, the 20" performs some trickery to achieve 24-bit color that the larger size iMacs do not. At any rate, now I'm not sure which is correct, or closest to it.
