  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MEET FELIX....

How about "lion in the night"?

LION-NIGHT.0000025.jpg

That came out nice!

Jarred has given you pre-release software. Scarlet footage would not be supported yet by 3rd parties.

Jim

Oh... Someone forgot to tell Quantel that. ;)

Has anyone tried the easy HDR tab yet?
Graded with the HDR tab just to see what would happen A003_C022_0101IE.0000022.jpg

Nice kitty. Keep it and us well-fed, Jarred. Thanks for letting us inside...

So. Much. Fun. I love the flexibility of .R3D files. Thanks so much Jarred for posting Scarlet clips for us to play with, and thanks to everyone who posted their own grades. It gave me lots of ideas for different looks to try out.

Antonio, I particularly like your day for night grade. It's very dark while still maintaining detail in the shadows. It inspired me to really analyze what makes a good night look. I applied a pretty extreme s-curve, with only the very brightest highlights pulled up, and everything else way down. I boosted the blue curve in the highlights and reduced the highlights in red and green. This didn't effect the color as much as I expected, so I nudged the white balance towards blue, as well as the highlights color wheel. Anything else you recommend to get that realistic day for night you got?

Anyway, lots of fun to play with, and I'm very excited for my own Scarlet!

I don't normally geek out like this but I was really curious to see this footage, its sharpness and its latitude.

I've posted a proreshd file of my grade at: http://www.victorvega.com/felix/felix_graded_ps.mov

The footage was nice and sharp. Definitely good to work with. There is some noise in the darker areas, which was fine for 800ASA. However in a recent interview with TED he said the camera was comfortable and usable in the very high iso settings...up to 5000-6400 I think...a figure I find very hard to believe given what I see here.

My questions fall mainly with the fixed lens and chip size. Frankly, a Lion is pretty damn huge...and even though there is a nice DOF here I'm thinking that the falloff in normal circumstances (a persons face for example) would be considerably less. This is totally fine, but DSLR DOF fetishists and those used to a S35 chip might feel restricted, especially if the fixed lens isn't really, really fast.

Overall though, it's a nice example of the capabilities of the camera. I just wish these things would get out in the world already. Its been a long, long time and the world really isn't waiting around...a fact everyone at RED is painfully aware of I'm sure.

Usable does not necessarily mean noise-free.

I dunno if this ok to say, but as incredible this is for a 6-ish k - dollars cam - which I will want, this is also not all bad news for the current RED1 4k owners...

If i want to export it in 3k why get i this? :

And suddenly the program escapes...

Never said it did, but with a fixed lens system you are stuck with a lot of variables. If the lens isn't really fast then the iso has to be...and the less noise the better as you know very well. If that lens is in the t2's vs the 4's its much less of a concern.

In no way am I criticizing. It's all cutting edge stuff and my interest is piqued. I shoot FILM, REDMX and F35 all the time on some pretty high budge stuff and a week ago there wouldn't be a chance in hell I would even consider a fixed lens camera...especially one with a tiny little chip. Now I'm grading footage and liking what I'm seeing.

Think it'll be a very popular camera if it can get into peoples hands at the right price point before the world catches up.

I'm sure you're aware though that pushing to higher ISO can only be taken on a case by case basis on what is useable or not. It depends obviously on the ambient lighting, the texture and depth of the scene and available information. At higher ISO you expect noise but its whether the amount of noise is either pleasing to see or adds texture to the shot.

Shallow DOF whores are only going to be happy with big sensors there is no way around that and they will moan continously. It will be a far cry from 1\3" video though and in my experience 2/3" has much more of a naturally pleasing fall off. A pity so many people with HDSLR's don't have the ability to smoothly pull focus or seem to be completely incapable of keeping it in focus.

The lens is T2.6 I believe.

Why would this be inappropriate? Some people might "upgrade" to Scarlet, some/most might upgrade to some form of epic.

Or did I miss a tone of contempt for the red one there?

Anyway, all of this is super exciting, especially now that I know how the scarlet looks like from the outside, AND the inside, figuratively speaking.
