  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meet Charlie..

sure :)

This photo reminds me of a BOLEX...with RED  on the side and a big lens...

Looks awesome... It's hard to imagine being able to shoot more resolution than my still camera every 1/24th of a second, let alone every 1/100th!

13.1 million pixels per frame = 314 million pixels a second @ 24 fps...

One thing that's blowing my mind, assuming I don't epic fail at math (like usual) : This jpeg is 4mb. RC28 / 30fps = <1MB per frame and I'm sure higher quality. So that makes RC like a zillion times more efficient compression than JPEG. Pretty neat.

Remember that RC only records one colour channel (just the greyscale image coming off the sensor) but JPEG has to record three.

Thats what I love about it. I really like the format, the deep DOF, small size of a minimum shooting package (as i did with any 16mm cam that shot daylight spools and stayed small).

I loved shooting with a bolex during my early years in film school. If the 2/3" cinema is a bolex, then the fixed package is a scoopic

So...
are you guys right next to the LA zoo?
(also)
Does this mean Tattoos are going out soon?

No but they are right down the street from Rancho Las Lomas which does have a zoological garden. I know because I got married there last year. Jarred you should ask to borrow one of the Siberian Tigers. I'd love to see one of those in 5K!

I tell you.. it is amazing what you can find walking down the streets in Hollywood.

Tattoos still are a bit away.. Remember, we are taking the time to get things right.

Hmmm... shooting this in RED Studios I guess. Epic is so close to me I can taste it.

I vote for tiger in 5K. ;p)

Jarred you should ask to borrow one of the Siberian Tigers.

That would be incredible.. but quite honestly, if anyone ( who knew me ) ever agreed to loan me a Siberian Tiger, they should be locked up :)

Heh ... maybe loaning a tiger to a guy who was severely mauled by an inanimate mechanical spider isn't such a good idea after all! :biggrinjester:

Hey Jarred, thanks for posting this! It's good to see things are marching forward! I'm really looking forward to that form factor, so cute and yet so kickass :-)

Btw, about a Siberian Tiger

still fresh thinking and the best movie about a "spirit"/"soul"/"Signs and Symbols" of Siberian Tiger written and directed by Akira Kurosawa

"Dersu Uzala" (1975)

"However, Dersu's eyesight and other senses begin to fade with age. Dersu is no longer able to hunt,
and the Siberian tiger stalking the old man comes very close until Dersu shoots at the predator."

LINK>>>

"the amazing shots of the Siberian tiger; the astonishing scene of the two men gazing at both the rising sun
and setting moon, all in the same 70 mm shot; and the superb sequence of the blizzard by the frozen lake."

We still have a lot to do before EPIC is ready to ship. Don't plan on tomorrow.
-JJ-

Can I have one the day after tomorrow? Just Kidding.

Please bring one of them working baby to NAB Jim?

k.. back on track now. Lets keep things positive.
-JL-

Please give us a new "eta" time line when ready Jarred?

Looking forward to seeing you and Charlie at NAB.

Thank You.

Fantastic. Considering that is a 5K image at only 28. Heck, that's lower than the 1080p XDCAM bitrate! The detail is startling, especially in the highlights, with no aliasing at all. Charlie itself is TINY! I can't imagine that image generated off something that small!

The image quality is amazing, but it's not lower than the XDCAM HD bitrate.

  • XDCAM HD 4:2:2 = 50 Mbits per second / 8 bits per byte = 6.25 MB/second
  • REDCODE 28 = 28 MB/second

But I agree that it's crazy to get that quality with 5K at 28 MB/s...

Delivering this image quality with REDCODE 28 is more challenging than if you used a higher data rate.

Which makes me think that Scarlet 2/3" could use very low data rates, so we can still record RAW on those situations where we need more footage per card or longer record times.

Should I say... REDCODE 14?
