  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

May Update... The month of Raven

Hello Brent & Jarred! Guys thanks for everything!!! Dan and the RED Team took care of me, the whole process was amazing... I owe you guys so much... I am ready for ITALY on Monday

No words describe how thankful and blessed I feel being here with you watching out for us, and thanks also REDusers, you have been so great too... I'll be sharing pics during the trip. :)

PS: Brent, If for some reason, anyone needs faster their allocation when my allocation time comes, please I am ok to have my turn skipped if that will help someone else's needs since I will be busy in Italy until Mid-End of June anyway.

:)

This place is just becoming a regular ol' love fest.

Good man, Alain.

Oh man, I just read there's a bunch of us in the first page, who are luckier than the other and got an upgrade from S-W to W-Mg for good attitude ! It's awesome even though I'm not on the list.

This is the kind of attitude Jim is surely proud of, and probably why you are friend. Stick for the bullshiters, reward for the positive thinker.

Yes, this is truly awesome! Big thumbs up guys.

Hi guys but the dragon loan is only for people that have ordered directly from Red? I ordered through cvp and I was windering if there is the chance to get a dragon loan camera for June for a fashion shot we need to do, I ordered my SW in February

Hi guy's, little advice would really help me make my mind up.

I'm considering switching to Scarlet-W from my Raven preorder on the 11th December.

Would this actually get me the camera sooner? (I have a potential job coming up that would make the switch more affordable if I could use a RED rather than use my FS700).

Then 2 questions on the actual camera's

1:Are their any actual compression to frame rate differences between the two? I searched the forum but got conflicting answers.

2: RE sensor size - how big of a difference to the actual look will this make between the full 35 Scarlet and smaller Raven?

Just weighing up the best plan - happy to wait but could be a good opportunity to jump up to Scarlet-W without footing most of the cost.

many thanks for the great advice the forums provided so far,

James

I know a lot of complaints and compliments have been said on these forums, particularly regarding ship times and and allocation and all that jazz.

I've also perused the forums for years but only to read and educate myself, never to actually reply to people or post anything.

But I just wanna say that I've been waiting for 9 years since RED first released their ONE model. I was just starting college and I saw how big of a disruptor RED was, because us young filmmakers were all looking for alternatives to shooting on something other than the HVX200. I have been blessed to be on many shoots that shot on RED, but never did I think I'd get a chance to own one. With this Scarlet-W release, I am more than ecstatic to finally have my very own RED camera. I wasn't making a lot of money here in LA, and to be honest, I still am not. But I am just blown away by the thought that I can now own a RED camera! So when I see these monthly updates from Jarred, after already having put down a deposit, I ask myself, "what's a few more months? I've already waited almost a decade for this moment!!!"

Thanks for your transparency, hard-work, and constant communication to your end-user, RED team.

I doubt they rent to anyone else, besides the first few days of ordering in early December. Even if you ordered directly.

Just thinking, we're mostly talking about early order of scarlet w, but not the late one.

I have ordered mine quite late, right after my weapon cf arrival, like in March. Do you know if we're talking summer or more autumn ?
I would love to have mine after vacation. I may have a tv show with two cameras at that time, and I would gladly use my own Reds.

Dont worry Matthew I actually looked you up first and saw you had your camera already. Regardless... You have earned a favor from me so tuck that favor away in a drawer somewhere and pull it out when you need it.

I'm going to try something new... Instead of always swinging baseball bats at dumbasses that can't learn to be civil with each other, I am going to randomly reward the good guys every once in awhile.

And I don't want people to start kissing our ass with the intention of getting free stuff.. In the future random acts of kindness will be based off of those of you who selflessly help each other here on a constant basis... not those who just fling compliments towards us.

Jarred, with you saying this. I have to say with what Brandan Leahy did for me and my family, I think that he did an amazing thing for us. He gave up his spot in the Raven que to help me. He is one of those few people we have on this amazing Earth, that makes it better and better.

Tons of information about this in many other threads, but in short, the compression is the same, the frame rates are the same, and the image is exactly the same from 4.5k and below. It is the same processor in each brain and same sensor so... Other than the obvious few other differences your image is gonna be the same just no 5k.

To your second question, Use this link to get an idea about the field of view difference between 4k Raven and 5k Scarlet-w. http://www.red.com/tools/crop-factor

Are you saying the current DSMC Media guide is inaccurate? Because the Scarlet-W and Raven are identical (at the same resolutions), according to it.

It's important to remember that the Raven's full sensor readout is actually 2.1:1 aspect ratio. So 4.5K FF on Raven is actually 4608 x 2160, not 4608 x 2412. So if you're comparing both cameras at "4.5K FF", they're not equivalent because the Raven is recording fewer pixels (less vertical height).

But if you compare any other resolution below this, you'll see they're the same.

Your right, the 4.5k is 1 point higher compression on the Raven, but everything else below 4.5k is the same for both raven and Scarlet-w.

And comparing Raven to Weapon is uneccescary unless this guy plans on spending 6 times what the Raven will cost him.

Have you noticed that since you said you would change the que when people start to bitch and be rude, people stopped complaining (drastically). I'm reading all these pages to see what is happening in the RED-world, and for a few pages now I don't read any complaint...

Cannot wait to receive my scarlet-w! I received my mount today, feels like Christmas morning..haven't felt this excited since I was 10 years old collecting all my pieces. Also big shout out to my rep Thomas Gibney his information and quick replies to my question is unreal! Great customer service.

So we're at the halfway mark of May, i hope you Ravener's are receiving them in droves and to my fellow Scarleters hold tight, June is right around the corner!

2: RE sensor size - how big of a difference to the actual look will this make between the full 35 Scarlet and smaller Raven?

many thanks for the great advice the forums provided so far,

James

Not much of a difference, both are crops.
The Raven has a 1.7 crop and the Scarlet has 1.5 crop.
[Both will say Full Frame, but they aren't really Full Frame 35mm - 24X36mm (diagonal 43.3)]
So, essentially, you are multiplying the crop factor with the focal length of the lens.
Your 50mm EF lens will become an 85mm lens on the Raven (multiply 50 with 1.7)
Similarly, the 50mm becomes 75mm on the Scarlet W (multiply 50 with 1.5)

50mm is truly 50mm on Full Frame 35mm.

How do I get my crop factors?
Divide Full Frame 35mm Diagonal with Sensor of Choice Diagonal.
So, Raven -> 43.3/25.5 - 1.698 ~ 1.7
And, Scarlet -> 43.3/28.9 - 1.4982 ~ 1.5

I understand that the dimensions of the sensors are more wider than conventional crop sensors, but the above is a rough estimate for me.

Just one flaw on your numbers. Considering that we are talking about motion picture cameras and not still cameras, the "full frame 35" doesn't apply. Our measuring stick in this case would be a super 35mm gate size, which has been historically the standard for most motion picture cameras in the last 100 years.
So in that consideration we can asses that at 5K theres really no crop, and at 4.5K I can use a highly technical measure of crop: just a smidgen...

Of course it applies, even if the standard is super 35mm in motion pictures.
If the lenses that you use are important and if you want to figure the true focal length, then of course it applies. Resolution is separate from sensor size and how big (meaning how close or far) the image will look...
For example, a camera with max. 2K resolution and super 35mm sensor will have the same focal lengths as 5K camera with super 35mm... Only resolution is changing.
Again, 50mm will only have a 50mm focal length on a Full Frame Sensor. I believe the 8K weapon is close to Full Frame 35mm... you're going to say that if they created a 8K super 35mm... the focal lengths won't matter?

A 50mm is always a 50mm. A 50mm will always be a 50mm focal length no matter what sensor you shoot on. The field of view changes between different sensor sizes - not the mm of the lens.
