  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

May Update... The month of Raven

Just curious Jason, why do you have RED PL mount in one pic and WC PL in another? any difference in the back focus or anything of tech importance (aside build quality)?

I was testing exactly that, along with lens info on the RED PL mount. As well as weight difference, WC is slightly lighter and performed well

Damn that is a nice setup! We gonna see any videos soon?
Yeah I will definitely post it over at Scarlet section. Filming a commercial in NYC this weekend!

Totally, I seriously thought about switching my Raven to Scarlet-W for this very reason.
Yeah she is a pretty girl :)

thanks! i wonder what length, maybe its a trial and error thing.

I know this from my Pogo Protector 3D print experiment. They're M4 x .7 screws with a max depth of 5.5mm on the side, and 6mm on top.

Haha, me too. It looks a lot better than I anticipated. I wouldn't mind the extra features, but I keep having to remind myself that I don't need them just yet. It's getting harder and harder, but I should be very close, so it's getting easier. Haha.

For everyone out there waiting for their cameras, it's worth the wait I promise you! Wish you all the best Scarlet-W / Raven brothers

I'm so glad you got yours dude! Everything seems to be working out for everyone!

Hey Jason,
curious why the two different PL mounts, is the RED that much heavier than the Wooden Camera one?

So, long time lurker on this forum, not much posting. But I have found myself checking the threads out everyday.

I was tempted by the Raven, but was happy I held out when the Scarlet-W was announced.

My new born son had me up early one night, 3am maybe, I'm in the UK and given the time difference I thought I'd check for any updates and there it was, the camera I was waiting for. Perfect timing and amazing specs, but most importantly an entry into the RED world.
I'd not always been a fan, mostly attributed by the bad attitude of an ex-friend who was a RED owner and looked down his nose at me for shooting a documentary on any camera I could get hold of.
Anyway, I sent an email to my local RED dealer and requested to place a pre-order immediately, 3am still was wishful thinking, but I got a reply at around 7:30 and I was first on the list. To a dealer in the UK that is.

Now I wasn't stupid enough to think I would be getting the camera any time soon, nor was I stupid enough to plan any jobs with it, I was stupid enough, however, to tell clients, directors and producers that I had ordered one. Cue many, many, many messages asking where the camera was and why I hadn't received it yet.
Unfortunately, the nature of the beast that is this business, despite your ability, some DoP's are judged for a job on their equipment, stupid I know, but it happens. Even though I haven't owned a camera for a while and had no problem getting work and hiring in for the job, I found that because I had told people I was getting a camera but it hadn't arrived yet, I was getting overlooked for some jobs that I normally would have booked pre-pre-ordering a camera, weird right?

So, I've just come off the back of a feature, which in fairness the Scarlet-W wouldn't have been the best camera for, and had a little catchup on this forum. In particular this thread. To read that there will be a small delay in production of the camera to focus on Ravens. I have no problem with that, the transparency here is welcomed, albeit sometimes puzzling, but appreciated none the less.
I have two more features to shoot this year, one in particular I thought I would for sure be holding the camera in my hand for, but now I cannot tell and through some other factors, it will benefit me more with having my own camera for the shoot.
So it is with great regret that I have to pull out of this journey.
I know I haven't contributed much, but I have been present and enjoyed the ride thus far. This community is great, there are some really talented people here and so many levels represented with so much useful information available. Not only that but plenty of people willing to help one another no matter the quest.

Brent, Jarred, you guys with your regular updates and replies helped with my understanding and patience, but unfortunately my time ran out.
Even though I will be joining the dark side, I feel it was my duty to say au revoir.... for now.

I have asked our loaner team and REL to sync up again so you are getting proper information.

Thanks, Ivan has contacted me, the reponse is negative because there is no Epic Dragon available and my timestamp is not eligible. For information for the others who are interested by a loaner kit, my timestamp is 14/12/2015 (S-W). Anyway we have to feed the rental houses or they will go bankrupt : )

Thanks anyway.

Well said Mike. Sorry it didn't work out for you as planned. Relations in the industry and perceptions can be weird. For example, a rental house might see you in a
different light for fear you won't rent from them anymore or be useful for "good word of mouth" rentals. Everyone one of us is a filmmaker to some degree, but I'd like to add that
I've found it a "No-No" to advertise as having your own production company (even just a name), when you are trying to be seen as a DOP. Not sure if you've come across that
but in any case best wishes.

All good, Mike. Wish you the best of luck and looking forward to when you decide to jump back to RED!

I am also a Raven to S-W switcher. Placed the order on 11/19/2015 at 06:40:39 pm. Allocated on April 15, then paid. It was a happy day. I remember dancing around the house with my wife. We even went out to eat and celebrate. I can’t express how excited I was to become a RED User.

It’s been more than the “3 days of processing” - so yeah - I’m pretty bummed it’s not yet in my hands.

The Scarlet-W camera has been the leading topic of discussion with my business partners, work colleagues, future clients, and etc. I get asked, poked, and reminded that it’s still not here and questioned when it will. This week, my rep told me not to expect anything until June. So I was disappointed to read this update. For those who have been allocated and are still without a camera… I feel your pain.

This will be my first RED. Like others, I’ve wanted one for a long time, but could never afford it. So the fact this is reality still blows me away.

I’ve had to “preach to myself” to resist getting angry and unreasonable. For those frustrated, this is what I tell myself. I hope this helps you to simmer down (just as I admit I have to)…

1. RED is not responsible for running your company, you are.

2. Focus on running YOUR business. (If you don’t have a company and you work for yourself, just go with this.)

3. If you have promised RED cameras for your shoots, then do whatever it takes to make it happen. Rent. Barter. Whatever.

4. Stop promising REDs for your shoots if you can't deliver.

5. If you didn’t plan for rentals and unexpected costs in the budget, now you know for next time. Charge more - you're worth it, right? Now act like it.

6. Always plan for the worst - and keep some overhead in your estimates for Next Day Air shipping - and etc - when emergencies surface.

7. Don’t blame RED for their inability to meet your demand. They’re being fair, transparent, yet still making great products - which is why we want the thing in the first place.

8. RED creates awesome cameras - and you probably don’t*. Focus on the content of what you’ll be shooting, not their manufacturing process. You're not in the camera-manufacturing business. You're in the camera-using business. (* for the one person who may be in the camera manufacturing business - skip this one)

9. Remember you do not run their company - so don’t try to from your computer keyboard.

10. Realize the privilege it is to get to make videos, films, stories, or whatever cinematic projects you make. If you get to make cool stuff and call it work, don’t forget how fortunate you are.

11. The camera WILL arrive. As much as you think life might be different once it arrives, just remember what got you in the game and focus on that in the mean time. Because when it gets here, the latter doesn't change.

12. Stop talking about it with people. As much as it might hurt refrain from shouting I USE RED… stay humble until it’s in your hands, and until you’re able to produce excellent quality.

13. Stay gracious. If you want to last in this industry - don’t you want a reputation for being reasonable and easy to work with? I do.

14. Nobody likes dealing with angry customers - so don’t be one.

I am still thinking what I should say to get a bump from Mg to Cf :)))

I have a feeling there will be many upset Raven clients who will be just on the verge to be allocated, when RED shifts to Scarlet next month. I can already see those "it's not fair" posts.

I could be wrong, but from my understanding, next month, the production lines will go back to "normal" making all the different models. Ravens won't stop, will just slow down...

That's what I was thinking as well. It would seem a bit counter productive to make all this headway on the queue, than to stop and let themselves get buried again. Bc I'm sure they are still getting a lot more raven orders every day, compared to the other bodies/packages. But even if they do I wouldn't put up a fuss, I'll get my raven when I get it, After getting my hands on a demo raven a few days ago I am so crazy excited but it's definitely worth the wait.

I thought they said May is the Raven month and June will be the Scarlet month and after June it would go simultaneously. But I could be wrong.

Just went through some of the posts in this thread just so we didn't keep speculating, this was from one of Brent's.
So when we are in June, we will have three mature sets of production lines pumping, meaning optimal output and greater flexibility for that load balancing.
