  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MATTEBOX: What's your preference?

The LockCircle Mattebox looks like a really interesting MB for users using Photo lenses. The Mattebox attaches to the lens but no weight is applied to the lens as it slides along the 15mm rails. This could be a great option for zoom lenses especially the crazy ass Canon 24-70mm zoom which telecscopes many centimeters. Has anyone any experience with this box?

I'm rocking a Bright Tangerine VIV and I love it!

What's the weight of the Strummer with (3) 4x5.65 trays and 138 rear bellows in LW15 configuration? Hope it's more like a 3-stage Chrosziel and less like an MB-20...

Also, are there 5.65x5.65 trays available? How about an ARF stage?

*Sorry, meant to post in the Bright Tangerine thread, please feel free to disregard!

When working as a camera assistant I personally like to use clip on matboxes. Arri's LMB5 seems to be the standard in Rental houses in Germany. It's simple but works great, never had any problems. I believe Arri announced a new LMB recently, looked nice, too.

RED PRO MB as clip on, have not found anything that gets even close to the usefulness of this MB Fantastic Job RED!!

ARRI MB28, still the absolute best as the bad boy fully loaded as on rods swing away 3 filter tray with 138mm Rotating Circular Polarizer filter.

Okay, after receiving the fully loaded Bright Tangerine Strummer, I need to rethink my toughs, as I have now sold both the RMB, just could no longer see to use it without the possibility of using 138mm Round Circular Polarizer filter, and the Arri MB28 because it was at the end way too heavy, too large and still allow for a lesser wide angle before vignetting.

The Bright Tangerine Strummer instead is smaller, lighter, equally well built but with more functions, and I can get a wider focal without vignetting on all 3 stage filters.

Ketch,

I've had some colleagues use the RED MB and had issues with it falling off during production, I'm guessing you haven't had this issue? Has anyone else seen this?

-Jacob

When used the RMB never did fall off any of the lenses, neither the 18-85 or Master Prime or Ultra Prime.

Hey Ketch, have you ever found a solution for using the Red Mattebox with Canon lenses? I know they have a clamp for rails in the works which is the right way to do it but I know if there was a another way you would be the guy, BTW I have used the wind machine I purchased from you numerous times and am very happy with it:) Thanks Again.

Yes only using set up rings screwed on to the Canon lenses and then when not enough used Rubber Donuts.

I own an Arri MB 20. Love it. Wasn't cheap. It's versatile, precise and reasonably light for a studio style box, but after looking into BT MB's, I'm thinking about taking the plunge. I went to BT's website, which I find to be somewhat useful for getting a sense of what they're about, useless for pricing and seeing the distinction between packages. So I've inquired about clip on options. Hopefully they have something viable at a good price. Looking forward to it.

BTW, I also spent a season on a TV show using O'Boxes. If you're doing a big hand held show (which ours was), I find them hard to beat for the money, especially when you mount handles and monitors on the box. My biggest misgiving is the small fiddly knob for the filter tray release. It's a real POA to get at especially in cold weather. Also, if you use it LWS you won't get full rotation of your stages so you may have to use a 138mm round. This option will limit your wide angle to 18mm or so. If you want full rotation put it on 15mm or 19mm studio. Last, I wish they'd make their eyebrow flat instead of indented so you could maximize the shading. Not sure what the purpose of the indent is.

We used them on a pretty harsh 6 month schedule and the only item that failed was the brow lockdown. Unfortunately, O'Connor wouldn't send us the replacement part. We had to send the entire MB in. But they did replace it. Good service can't be beat.

Other MB's I've owned. Chrosziel 206. Workhorse MB. Superlight and reliable. Only 2 stage though. You can find them used often for 5-600 dollars. I'm not a fan of their three stage 256 clip on. Leaks light between stages and built like a potato chip. It's light though. Last of all are the Arri LMB's. Truly simple, light and beautifully built. No rotation though. You'd need to buy a rotating Pola stage (not cheap).

I'm a big fan of the vocas mb430. It ain't cheap, but the box is rock solid. Love the internal flags when you're trying to keep things light for steadicam or handheld. Also very openly transparent about pricing, accessories etc. I had a couple of questions when purchasing and they were super quick and detailed in their response.

O'Connor stated their O-Box could use 18mm lens. But it doesn't work with 5x6 filters in the tray. May be at 26mm you frame out the black sides. What do you do when you want to shoot a Tokina 11-16mm in full sun? What matte-box do you use then?

Will,
Check out Curt Pairs review of the Bright Tangerine Viv on Vimeo. It is currently the widest viewing angle available in a matte box on the market. You can use a 14mm lens in s35 with the 4x5.65 filter trays installed.

The bright tangerine looks fantastic. Nr 1 on my list currently. Ketch what accesories have you ordered for it. I have some trouble figuring out what package I should actually buy for it. Also hard to find places to purchase it in Eurpe.
Best

contact Curt, he will get you a quote and can get you a matte box anywhere in the world. He is one of BT's distributors.

I'm not Ketch but I purchased the 3 stage Strummer, top and side flags, all the step down rings, hard mattes to block out even more flares, the top accessory attachment which has 3/8th's inch holes on top to mount a cine tape or other accessories, and I got the 19mm adapter. I absolutely love mine! Definitely send Curt an email and he can build you a custom kit so you can add or subtract items to meet a budget.

I also just ordered a Viv for those light weight run and gun situations. Small, light weight, add or remove stages, clamp on or rod mount, top and side flags, and wide field of view.
