  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

your noise comparison footage at 2000 ISO is pretty impressive.

But I'm curious about one thing : how does 6K Dragon and 6K Helium shots compare, noise wise in low light conditions ?

For instance if you shoot both sensors at the same resolution and ISO (2000 ISO fro instance), do you still notice a major improvement in noise ? Or is it mainly the 8K oversampling that helps getting a cleaner image at high ISO ?

One thing I have noticed working with the SCARLET-W (DSMC2) is the new camera bodies handle noise better than the original DSMC. I assume the new camera body + new sensor + 8k would makea a huge difference

Bear in mind Mark was comparing Epic Dragon to Weapon Helium for noise, not Weapon Dragon to Weapon Helium...and all DSMC2 cameras seem to handle noise better.

That said - yes, Helium appears better in lowlight regardless.
 
I was surprised I was able to use stuff at 2500iso and even 3200iso when I first got my SW. really blew my mind..

6k Weapon is better at 2000 ISO that 6k Dragon... Helium @6k is the same as 6k Weapon. but !... A cropped sensor.

Right, so what you're saying is that shooting the higher resolution = smaller grain/noise. Still, good to hear that the performance is there if you know you could be shooting in a scenario that would normally yield noisy footage.
 
Toia! Mate, this little "test footy shot over some broken days and cut on an airplane" is basically doing to me what the Milk ladies (for those of you who remember) did for me on RED 1. I am still hunting some R3ds to play with, if you could post anything from your shoot I would greatly appreciate. I am not interested to repost and pixel peep, just trying to get a hang of the 8k workflow on my current setups. Thanks again and nice work, very inspiring.

Just curious, how does the noise compare to Epic MX sensor? With Mx I try to avoid going up higher than 1600 IS. Am I right in assuming that this would look roughly similar to Helium 3200 ISO?

May I ask, how much do you sharpen? Are you using unsharp mask and/or high pass sharpen?

What Mark is mentioning is that being cropped into 6K Helium VS full-frame 6K Weapon Dragon - you can expect similar noise patterns. When expanded out to 8K FOV - you're looking at smaller grain structure, which balances out the ability to vastly bump your ISO. Though, I still do believe the new sensor has other tricks alongside what is assumed. If you look at nearly tests of the white Helium set that made it's way out, and the comparison to Dragon cameras - the Helium looks gorgeous and creamy in comparison. Almost like a veil was lifted on all the colors that reside in-between. I'm not sure if this was merely different color science interpretation, the expanded pixels, or just a better sensor all around.
