  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Announcement- July 6th

My guess is the device will work as a collective. The more people use it, the more it will build a world wide database. I suspect it will be some sort of augmented reality to capture spaces and objects.

Could it be to do with storage, like crazy fast hard drives that wirelessly transfer camera flies directly without cables and upload to cloud? Or perhaps it's like the Pied Piper of compression using all our phones as collective computing power........ lol too much suspense.

My purely intuitive (based on some of what I think I know, know I know, and know that I don't know) thoughts are that it will use, rather than capture what you suggest. Our cameras may become useful as stock providers of these things.

We may be looking at unbelievable opportunities as camera owners for providing content for the, uh, thing owners. '-)

I thought I remembered him mentioning VR but don't recall specifically that he dismissed AR, too. Is that true?

OK - I looked back and he did rule out AR because "no one wants to wear glasses..". But, later, in a post on July 25, 2016, he said - "I will say that AR and VR are now officially obsolete..."

So, there's that.

Watch, phone or glasses -in that preference order

That feels like there's gonna be some kind of AR glasses with VR interface for use on the road. Its only thing I can think of. They look like regular glasses but have an AR interface with Magic Leap like tracking and integrated screens that we could use as monitors for our cameras and so on.

If VR and AR is still on the table, thats the only thing that makes sense as revolutionary.

Still, he said it wasn't about AR or VR, which means if it's glasses, I don't think that's what it's about. Maybe he's just posting everywhere to get traction though. If it's both Oakley and Red, but not related to VR or AR, I don't know what this is about.

Maybe you're right, it could be fashionable Red sunglasses to wear. You could buy more than one as I'm said.

Of course, Jim didn't announce this on the new project thread. The July 6th project may not even have anything to do with the project.

He's said on the Oakley forum:

- it's the biggest thing he's ever worked on. Which is a bit of a tease but sounds like he thinks it will have a bigger impact than the RED camera did on the digital cinema business; it's isn't some trivial widget!

- It's NOT sunglasses. And he's already made his views on AR & VR clear. So I wouldn't go anywhere near any kind of headgear or eyewear.

- It's for everyone. So it's a mainstream consumer product - not something for one niche industry like ours. So it's nothing related to anything RED have already produced.

I'd call that pretty wide open.

Mike

Like mike say its suppose to be for mainsream and the biggest thing he worked on so We could be guessing for ever.

Well... we probably can stop guessing on July 6th.. unless there's a global calamity that takes out the internet.. in which case... we truly could be guessing forever.

Could be over sized Elton John Stage glasses? I'm pulling your leg Mike. Jet a funny possibility with so little previous information.

Of course, it could be filming glasses :). As long as it's not what I have been planning to work on, post vr.

But, per my post above, he DID say "I will say that AR and VR are now officially obsolete..." -

Now, even if his propduct isn't actually AR or VR, we have to assume they are some kind of substitute for AR/VR in a way that makes them obsolete. So, maybe not headgear but that doesn't rule out the general product category that covers this visual technology.

It might not even be part of the Red brand. Possibly launching a new brand and product and just hyping it here and other places to get the ball rolling.

Again, I agree. I'd doubt that it is a RED product, myself, but I'll give it a 20% chance.

A.I Wireless pre editing straight to premier pro or final x, with music preview and motion tracking built in metadata for vfx on the fly...It guesses your scene mood, and apply a great Phil LUT accordingly..... All in REALTIME... With Voice command while on set. LOL

I would love to see real global broadband maybe using low earth orbit satellites, or whatever, for lower latency. Super high-speed and a solid signal around the globe. You can use VOIP for your calls and stream / upload video all day and night. That would be a dream come true and something for everyone.

If you got the money, talk to me. One f my design studies in recent years was a proposal for drones in the upper atmosphere beyond aircraft (tricky). Another was a replacement for satelites going back decade or two. Apart from other things like multiplexing half a million people on a smaller tower at once.
