  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Announcement- July 6th

Well maybe I have to walk back what I said earlier. Jim just posted to the Oakley forum in the last hour. Twice:

"For those of you that might have interest, I am posting the biggest thing I have ever worked on July 6th at 9am PDT. It is for everyone. Wish everyone the best. "

"Sorry... didn't see the other thread. Not a sunglass but it is for everyone. Jim"

So I guess I was wrong in assuming that it was something strictly for imaging pros simply from the fact that it was only being announced here on Reduser. The game's afoot! Again!

Sir, if only you were one of my enemies, an excellent Tin Foil Hat quote could be used.

The post from the "Hint" thread is pretty fascinating IMO. Suggests they know the category, just not the details.

Still thinking Magic Leap fits in this somewhere.

I think those guys may have embarrassed themselves with that post. Don't think that has anything to do with Kim's announcement.
Jong Un is making an announcement?

'-)

If it's not going to make our cameras obsolete and be a new category, this will not be about our Red cameras at all, or at least not the acquisition part of filmmaking. It might be an add-on for cameras, or something in post. As an add-on it could be an advanced "kinect" thing that maps the z-depth of an image in high resolution and when synced to the images you don't have to use greenscreen anymore. This is what I feel is gonna be the real light field tech because people want to use their lenses but still benefit from never having to rotoscope or do greenscreens anymore. On location camera tracking together with z-depth acquisition would be a real revolution in filmmaking, making a shitload of VFX work be as easy to comp as tracking a window in a grade suite.

On the post side, it might be something we don't know about. If it's hardware, it might just be a computer that is totally GPU driven and highly specified and advanced for professionals in that area, who knows.
But the facts are that it's a new thing and that it's announced here at Red so I don't think it's too far away from being related to what the community of filmmakers are doing and in need of.

Shit. This changes everything. I thought North Korea was going to reveal new technology to drop small nuclear bombs on people you don't like!

You mean this announcement is coming from Jim? Well then... never mind.

One thing we haven't looked at is sound.

We are all so focused on visuals because of the cameras, but sound would be a new category under the Red brand, but still be of interest to the community of filmmakers. Maybe there's something revolutionary about sound. Sound acquisition has been rather the same for a long time really. Even if it went over to digital and being high quality with it, there haven't been anything really revolutionary about it. Mics and mixers work the same as analogue basically and even though fidelity, bit rates etc. have been greatly improved to lossless, we still have to acquire sound the same way as we always have.

If this is all about travel, space, distance, electronics etc. as have been stated, maybe this is about sound? Maybe they've figured out a way to lock sound acquisition into a limited space around the mic, making any sound outside of that area silent. I don't know how that would be possible, but that would be revolutionary to say the least. It would have implications not only for filmmakers but for the entire world. Just think of speaking over the phone to someone in a busy area.

Anyway, we really don't know... maybe it's a Red cup-holder for Tesla cars, who knows. :tongue_smilie:

I read yesterday that Jim posted something about this announcement on the Oakley forums. I think that's a huge hint that it's not cinema related.

Still, he said it wasn't about AR or VR, which means if it's glasses, I don't think that's what it's about. Maybe he's just posting everywhere to get traction though. If it's both Oakley and Red, but not related to VR or AR, I don't know what this is about.
