  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Announcement- July 6th

CRSPR cas/9 Co-op.

EDIT: Or SDK '-)

Although I have not read every post of the 17 plus pages so far. Jim clearly stated a new product category. So lets just say its not a wireless follow focus or a monitor or a lens-RED has done or does all of that. Use your imaginations People lets group think this and figure it out. RED cellphone seems to be the lead so far with some intriguing bits of patent filings. Coming up with a cellphone that rethinks the category seems like an impossible reach considering the resources of Apple and Samsung. It should and be a fun 9 days.

New product category...

what does a guy like Jim want or need for himself? he built a sick camera that did everything that wasn't being done by the major camera companies. he saw a big gap and filled it.

when you have everything and you have done everything, what is left to desire?

health. it's something to do with health. remember the aspartame thread?

some kind of bio-hack.

mystifying and intriguing.

That patent does mention a "glucose monitoring module" :)

Still reading through this but it looks like this is an extremely modular phone. Will this impact the cinema world? Probably. But it looks like they want to make waves much much bigger than that. Gaming modules, mentions of attaching the camera/phone to drones? Even if this isn't the July 6th announcement, this has me really excited that this is coming.

My god if it is that, they are gunning for Apple with one fell swoop. It'd permanently change mobile photography.

If it is a modular smartphone camera, it better have light field or depth mapping, otherwise they may have some trouble differentiating from the rest of the market or justifying their entry. Can't say any of Samsung or LG's past modular smartphones/cameras have been anything but failures really, so not a good indicator of the market for such a device.

Frankly I take pictures with my Honor 8 over my A7S2 sometimes because I can get a large format look right into my instagram from a camera I always carry, but it's not tech most people know about so maybe there is an emerging market there once it becomes mainstream. Accessible realtime depthmap/lightfield effects for video (and even stills at this point) is definitely a place where the hardware and software is there and just needs a well thought out product...

The lens pictured on that patent makes me think it's a full frame 35mm dragon still camera, but that seems hard to imagine with the scarcity of VV sensors so I'm probably just reading into mockup drawings too much.

I think it's got to be battery tech.

Effects everyone. Space (smaller) Time (time to charge) travel (can't air travel with Li-Ion batteries).

Battery tech requires a serious shakeup - obviously Elon Musk / Tesla has been advancing stuff on the large scale storage front but where I can imagine Jim advancing stuff is in small and light batteries. Rechargeable batteries for drones or portable batteries for production needs that charge far faster and are far lighter.

Probably too expensive to manufacture en masse right now to compete head to head with Li-on tech in consumer devices but that offer a price performance weight edge for those who have the cash and the need (so the production industry still makes sense to launch too via RED but everyone still should be interested.)

A cellphone is about so much more than the camera feature. You can fit Raven-tech into a phone, I'm still not giving up my iPhone. Find it very hard to believe this is a cell phone.

I don't think so. I don't think there are that many companies that actually make battery cells (Isn't it most of the market Panasonic Sanyo?) and it doesn't seem like an easy market to get into especially for a company that maybe never made any of their own battery cells... And they just released new compact batteries that don't seem to make much of an advance in weight or efficiency, they wouldn't announce new battery tech right as their small V-mount batteries are becoming available...

Exactly, no one will make a phone AND a camera people want, so such a product will only alienate customers compared to a non-hybrid product. I hope it's not raven-tech in a stills camera, that doesn't seem like it'd go very far in the stills world. If it's stills it'd have to be one of their top sensors and those don't seem like they could put them into a compact camera inexpensively or build processing/cooling for them that wouldn't cripple the rest of the system...

Sorry I don't see many people calling up their non-techy friends to log on to reduser that day just to order batteries through a private link. Cellphone yes I want that but something tells me that patent is just part of a future product.

Nope... that was a good idea :)

Just saved up for Weapon Mg to Weapon 8K upgrade. Wonder if I should hold off until the announcement or just go for it and sell my organs for whatever's coming? Choices, choices...
