  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Announcement- July 6th

Maybe it's a new superfast storage system. This system is up to store a really, really, really big amount of data...
and the very best is,.... it's 100% secure, so you can save the data forever,... forever.
And it's supertiny. :emote_hippie:

Christopher Stark is on to something:

Taking a page out of the MICHAEL CIONI playbook - raw data will port directly to a RED cloud based storage system on a subscription basis -
your current mags will be used for ProRes.

Light Field....

Jim has a patent on Dense Field imaging which was granted in November last year.
Maybe it's a module that attaches behind the lens or replaces the OLPF. He also has a patent for Low-profile lens mounts.
Or maybe it's built into a new lens with internal focus and aperture control. But I doubt they want to get back into the lens game.

It's that camera thing they used in Deja Vu to see the past... or glasses.

I'd hope for that too. Long term data storage needs some innovation. Especially at the lower end of the budget.

Mobile RED with Lytro kind features in size of a Mobile phone which can be expanded from 2K to 8K and beyond...

A possibility I'm leaning toward is a viewing mechanism/twist on TV/Monitors (perhaps holographic?)

5. It is not VR... which I think is as obsolete as 3D. No one has just acknowledged this yet.

6. It is not AR... which I think is doomed because no one wants to wear a headset. Think about it.

I guess it won't be those things, but I also disagree with Jim on both those things. I agree that no one wants to wear a headset as they currently are. All big and bulky. But when they eventually become the size of regular eyeglasses I don't think that will be a big deal. At which point I think VR will also become a bit more interesting. I mean eventually we're going to get to a point were VR can simulate reality-like worlds with full sensory immersion. So it's not obsolete, just hasn't really blossomed yet.
But I guess I was a little too quick to hope RED figured this eyeglass sized AR/VR glasses thing out. It's probably still 15-20 years out. But with what they were doing with laser projectors and camera tech and a past in sunglass design/manufacturing, I figured they'd be the perfect company to tackle such a thing.

Clambering on the have-a-guess bandwagon.

My bet would be on display technology, seems an area ripe for innovation and it goes hand in hand with what Jim and Red have done with the cameras.

There was a image on an instagram of a red looking device with heat exhausts and air vents. So i wonder whether it's a laser projector of some description. Something that offers cinema quality in a small compact package. You can have my money on that one.

Or maybe glasses with displays built in too.

Maybe a 3D display, just like the movies have promised us for decades :)

cheers
Paul

This would be my guess as well, although not sure in the value of guessing. The acquisition media (Red Camera) has progressed to 8k but the ability to view the final images has not kept up. This is where Jim has found a niche before, not a new product category but a better product such as sunglasses, video cameras. Both interestingly have to do with vision, so I suspect this one will also be vision oriented. Red took a stab at projectors but it didn't survive. Even Apple had looked at making a new TV of their own.

More specifically, I would guess that this is a projector/screen combination that gives very realistic images, possibly 3-D like or at least images that change depending on where you are in relation to the screen. Basically an improved movie experience, something that everyone would want to own (might be scalable). Probably to some extent cloud based. Not another camera/lens/media storage/battery. An existing category made much better.

I wish there was a prize for the best guess.

I think a Red phone is highly unlikely, i can't see anyone standing a chance against Apple in that market. It would be business suicide to try really.

Mass storage is an interesting thought, holographic storage, something really really dense and new? That would be major. But then would that be an instant CC purchase on the 6th? Not sure.

Money is still on display tech

cheers
Paul

Red products are once again for sale on B&H. Did that come about then disappear a few years back?

Does this have something to do with the July 6th announcement? Possibly paving the way for a consumer driven product to be sold in mass through online retailers?

If it is something more for the general public is it possible that it's not sold under the Red brand?

+) If a light field camera can magically capture 3 dimensional data -> perhaps this is the process in reverse : A portable hologram display?
+) Or alternatively ... a POV camera recording system that tracks in real time what the user is focussing on within the frame / instantly rack focusing what the user is looking at.

Perhaps JJ has fabricated the first EVF replacement that tracks your eye and projects a 3d image into your eye ... that actively refocuses the lens according to what you are trying to look at?

EDIT 1 : 30th June : Another wild guess:

+) Two pairs of glasses.

+) In Lenses Sensor & Transmitter

+) Normal operation Pair 1 = Rx : Pair 2 = Tx

+) Ability for person 2 to se Person 1 POV

+) Also can act has personalised HUD for 4K UHD source (eg Camera output)

+) incorporated Low latency 5G transceiver

EDIT 2 : 30th June : Another wild guess:

+) Occurs to me that if you are Recording your own POV .... you can Play it back to YOURSELF.
Bingo.

+) This would record yourself Through Time.

+) Life Documentation - Little Brother.

+) And the ability to see life vicariously through the eyes of another.

EDIT 3 : 30th June : Another wild guess:

+) Outside of Lens => Electronic ND => Directional Photon Collator => Directional Photo output => Inside of Lens

+) When not in use : Clear
+) When Recording : No ND, No output : Just Recording
+) When in Playback : ND + Output : No recording

EDIT 4 : 30th June : Another wild guess:

Here's a random RU quote from 2013 :
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?80988-NAB-2013&p=1024346&viewfull=1#post1024346

"
+) Create a compact wearable (stereo) video & (stereo) audio receiver compatible with the Meizler module and clips to your belt. Work with John Atkinson (JH 16) to replay 'perfect' audio. Work with MicroOLED to create goggles with their 0.61 inch screens on each eye (5.4 mpix / 100,000:1 contrast / 0.2 watts) -> this would be a step up on 3d monitoring
-> versions available with only one eye active
-> wired version available in place of EVF
-> option of z distance of superimposed camera controls so eyes focus does not have to change
-> option for Low power light to shine into one of the eyes pupils to determine where the eye is looking. This information could to be included as metadata, or used for GUI enhanced options (eg selection or focus).

When I covered CineGear this year, I did an interview with Vincent Laforet. In it he made mention that RED was killing it and he wouldn't be surprised to see them selling cameras at Best Buy. Interesting at the time, maybe more interesting now. Check it out if you're interested:
