  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Announcement- July 6th

Personally would love to see a Mavic Pro sized drone with an integrated Red Dragon Sensor...

From the December patent application it looks like a reduced Red Epic which should be close to an A7s in size?

Wireless 4K Monitor with built in Storage/Recording feature.  Wrong! Am i?

Or A device that uses Laser Sensor technology....

It probably starts with the word 'Quantum' and ends with something like 'Computer', "Cooker", "Cell Phone" or 'Hair Dryer'

I'm just guessing like everybody else. But the keywords do suggest something at the very other end of the camera. It wouldn't make sense for RED to release a Autonomous Car/Cellphone/Hairdryer/Mobile Phone... as much as it is a new product it probably stays within the realm of image making/image viewing/image workflow but probably more so towards something experiential. At first I thought of time travel :) when I heard time, space etc.. but then perhaps something that solves your work in the field. But then, that's not a new segment (and nowhere does it say it is). Some electronics products that we use do the job but it doesn't do it well. So like the RED cameras it removes a lot of the pain and allows for focusing on the creative aspect of creating. Somewhere these news resonate something within the workflow, but more so toward the experiential - but not being VR/AR-related.

But space is probably physical-space related and not storage. Like Mark suggested, it wouldn't surprise me if we are talking about a lightfield-enabler.. but that's a "narrow" market and touches on 3D/VR/AR a but too much.

Or... it is just something so cleaver that none of us had thought of and blows everybody's mind. That's probably it. I'll leave it there. :)

I'm thinking about it from the morning and I think Drone and Gimbal definitelly not. Freefly makes those and you can't beat Alta + Movi Pro combo. High speed camera? No. 6K at 100fps is more than enough. I think small action camera shooting REDCODE RAW on bulit in SSD would be nice! Something you can use in those situations and match the footage with normal RED camera :-D

Pare this back to basics.

We've been told it won't "impact" our cameras and it's a "new product category". So it's NOT a digital cinema camera or glass or lens control or batteries or an accelerator card etc. etc.

We've been indirectly told it is something closely related to our industry sector.

Howso? Well I did a Google search on "Jim Jannard" over the last 24 hours. There's _nothing_ in the business press about an upcoming announcement. This isn't going to be something you can buy in Best Buy or Sears. The _only_ announcement is here. It's a RED product; not something from some other corporate vehicle Jim owns. It's something for us.

That narrows the field considerably and eliminates the more outlandish or mainstream products.

So what could it be? A stills camera? Perhaps with some radical innovation? Lighting? Drone? Camera support? Gimbal? DIT device or cart? Projector? Some kind of radical (fuel cell??) power source? All valid guesses; your guess is as good as mine.

Clambering on the have-a-guess bandwagon.

My bet would be on display technology, seems an area ripe for innovation and it goes hand in hand with what Jim and Red have done with the cameras.

There was a image on an instagram of a red looking device with heat exhausts and air vents. So i wonder whether it's a laser projector of some description. Something that offers cinema quality in a small compact package. You can have my money on that one.

Or maybe glasses with displays built in too.

Maybe a 3D display, just like the movies have promised us for decades :)

cheers

My guess is it has to do with power and/or battery tech. Probably based on carbon nano tube or graphene tech.

OK... just because you guys are trying so hard.

1. It is not world peace. I wish we could deliver.

2. It is not energy related. We will leave that up to Elon Musk.

3. It is not time travel. That is just not going to happen.

4. It is not saving wildlife. Although I am fully engaged in that cause.

5. It is not VR... which I think is as obsolete as 3D. No one has just acknowledged this yet.

6. It is not AR... which I think is doomed because no one wants to wear a headset. Think about it.

Every once in awhile everything changes. That's what we have.

In 2006 I asked everyone to trust me. We delivered 4k on a compact flash card for $17,500 when Sony was selling 1080P for $225K to an SR deck.

Once again, I am asking you to trust me.

Jim

On the wall

On the wall

I hope it's a display product. Since the Red projector was cancelled it makes sense they were working on an alternative. And the alternative to
projectors is obvious and the writing is on the wall (pun intended): Affordable, configurable, Oled quality video walls. Something like Cledis or
the products from SiliconCore or Samsung. High quality LED panels that can be assembled to 4K or larger video walls, but 10 times cheaper than
current offerings, with at least 1000 nits and Oled blacks, plus accoustically transparent and optionally with a polarisation filter on top for LG
Oled type 3D quality. That would be my dream product. :hurray::emote_happyhappy:
