  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Announcement- July 6th

I really love the idea of a RED computer. ... but I also I think it will be some kind of wearable device, maybe "smart" eyeglasses that interact with your daily life ?
I just hope my card has the limit to jump on it right away !!! waiting for over a year on my camera was painful.

:)

Flat Screens are out, curved are in...meaning no need for a headset, goggles etc...just turn your head a look or see it out of your peripheral vision.

Will work perfectly for Desktops, Big Screen TV's and also Projection.

As part of the system a camera that records high quality RAW at something like 135-175 degrees would work an absolute treat.....

touch focus lens with accompanying wireless handheld monitor...*drops the mic*

THAT sounds like the best bet so far...

IMHO a new cell phone housing with a CPU and adaptable lens mount. The sandwich contains a regular cell phone and extends it, making it robust and rigid. May be its a camera of its own or resembles a P+S adaptor in minimal size, to combine it with the cell phone camera. The lenses seem ultra flat, maybe employing the latest planar lens technology (similar to ultra high res fresnel lenses, created using wafers). Something in that direction.

Anyhow, we will see what they come up with.

Btw, Jim, Jarred, if you want to save the world, I have a serious project idea in that context that we can discuss... No joke. Preparing for startup.

Tim,

I've seen this too. However, I don't think thats it, because the scetches in the patents show an interchangeable lens, but apparently very flat lenses. Reminds me of my lens cap for my Canon EOS, which is a point hole lens with adjustable aperture, looks very much the same as in the sketch.

What I was thinking about was like these:

http://www.thecomputationalphotographer.com/2016/06/metamaterial-extra-thin-lens/

https://www.seas.harvard.edu/news/2016/06/ultrathin-flat-lens-resolves-chirality-and-color

https://www.seas.harvard.edu/news/2012/08/flat-lens-offers-perfect-image

Both Hector Ortega and Stephen Pizzo have patents on extremely flat lens mounts.

The manyfold of housings shown in the sketches resembles typical lens positions of iPhones and Galaxy phones (which make a huge portion of the market), so it seems to adapt to these phones and - maybe - extends their capabilities strongly. We know what ASICs can do, performance wise...

Love speculating ;-)

I think we have to assume this is something that goes well beyond the camera tech that Jim and RED have been working on for the past 15 years. I assume this will have a much bigger impact, something that isn't currently available (at least in the advanced form they will present), and will make people's jaw hit the ground. Jim has clearly been working on other things for a while now and I think there are some things that he is very passionate about, especially when it comes to technology that can help people. So, my guess is that this is a technology that allows people to do something that they haven't been able to do before or at least not something available to the masses. But I guess we'll find out on July 6th. Looking forward to it!

This mostly.

Everything lines up to it being AR/VR related.

Think about it. This is a guy that made a sunglasses company and then a camera company. He made a pair of sunglasses once with integrated earbuds.
The next logical step is combination of all of that with AR/VR glasses.
Yes those would include time, space and travel as VR worlds could bring you multiple places (just virtually).
Yes it would apply to more than just camera geeks since AR/VR is the next logical step in computer technology.

You just have to broaden your mind about what AR/VR would do in the future. Imagine these things are the size of regular eye glasses (eventually). A lot of people wear regular eye glasses all day long and have for decades. A lot of people wear sunglasses. Eventually such glasses will replace smartphones. Who wants a tiny little screen in their pocket when they can have a sky sized screen appear before them? Imagine all the possibilities of interacting with virtual objects as you walk around the world or even real object. You see a plant with berries on it as you walk through the woods. They light up red, yellow or green depending on if they are poisonous, or safe to eat or if you should be cautious.
There are so many things this kind of technology could do, it would be revolutionary. I also have no doubt this is where we are going, whether delivered by RED or someone else.

Nope

OK... just because you guys are trying so hard.

1. It is not world peace. I wish we could deliver.

2. It is not energy related. We will leave that up to Elon Musk.

3. It is not time travel. That is just not going to happen.

4. It is not saving wildlife. Although I am fully engaged in that cause.

5. It is not VR... which I think is as obsolete as 3D. No one has just acknowledged this yet.

6. It is not AR... which I think is doomed because no one wants to wear a headset. Think about it.

Every once in awhile everything changes. That's what we have.

In 2006 I asked everyone to trust me. We delivered 4k on a compact flash card for $17,500 when Sony was selling 1080P for $225K to an SR deck.

Once again, I am asking you to trust me.

Jim

On the calendar... hope REDUSER does not crash with the amount of people tuning in for the announcement

Space... Time.... Travel... New product catagory.

My guess is a portable, self-powered, high-capacity storage device that offloads (wired/wirelessly) directly and automatically from a camera. (Think Nexto-DI on steroids)

Lots of Space for your footage (Possibly onboard compression),

Saves time with automatic transfers

You can take just a camera and this device on-location; no need for a laptop/redmag reader while travelling.

Supports native REDcode (naturally...) and other cameras/formats as well; all shooters welcome..
