I'm sure others have been wondering the same thing, so I thought I would post a response I received from Magma regarding the possibility of upgrading my ExpressBox 3T when Thunderbolt 2 becomes available.

thanks for the Heads up this is really great news

Since you have their ear, can you ask them if an expansion chassis using two Thunderbolt 2 ports is possible to maximize the throughput for cards like the RedRocket X, which apparently is limited/throttled in a single TB2 scenario.

Thanks Nick. good news.

Now we need to find out about this impending Rocket issue.

Is there any technology which allows parallel operation of TB2 or will that be TB3 ?

This is great news. I had thought my Magma 3T was outdated with the release of Thunderbolt 2, haha.

I too hope that we'll be able to use parallel connections. That would be awesome. Does anyone know if this works with the current Magma 3T?

From Magma:
Aggregating multiple TB2 ports is currently unclear whether it can be done or not – it certainly makes sense that it would be desirable. We will be looking into it but not able to give a definitive answer right now.

Well, they should know pretty soon. Intel is said to be releasing all the developer info, tools and components for Thunderbolt 2 to all developers next month. Some Intel people have said it's possible. What I'm worried about is that it's only possible through convoluted work-arounds or will have some other caveat we're not aware of and in the end, peripheral makers won't take advantage of multiplexing the ports. Hope that's not the case.

Having personally worked with and visited Magma in San Diego on numerous occasions during the development of my Launchpad (they have built the custom PCB designed by me needed for the Launchpad), I highly doubt that. I would think the opposite might be the case here... Or worse - it's a knock-off!
