  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Magic lantern... Dude.

When the 100MB UDMA7 Sandisk CF came out / the 5D2's ability to write was hampered by to Canon low level routines - which you could max out further by frigging the write thread priority. Canon released a 'driver' update with slightly larger buffers which helped a bit.

The live view has a genlock : Background YUV, foreground 8 bit palette - so you can read and display 'raw' data (and the Dryos read routine worked marginally better than write)

Real time YUV -> RGB -> dithered palette onto foreground was possible on the 5D2 .... but a bit heavy on memory.

There is an ASIC temperature sensor to allow shutdown - or stopping of CPU heavy code.

Canon had a lot of 'already working' code in the Dryos (over 19,000 subroutines) - what Alex can do from scratch in two weeks would probably take Canon's team 18 months to code and test ... and then they would have to throw away what they know 'works for the simple workflow / Use Case'.

Now ... the 5D3's DIGIC 5+ is 15-17 times faster than the 5D2 .... what couldn't you do with that sort of horsepower?

someone on the magic lantern forum was exceeding the 4 gig file limits earlier today.
At least he was reporting that.
i believe this is some kind of misunderstanding, record restart does not work for RAW recording in ML, at least at this time, and to record a single file larger than 4Gb on a FAT32 card is not possible,
i tried the latest alpha with the raw rec module on MarkIII, workflow is rather slow, painful and buggy, but the image is truly amazing.

The top ML guys need to be put in a safe house before Canon takes them out ;-) hehe jk as many others have said it is more of a positive for Canon because they will inevitably get more sales from this achievement...when it is stable and can shoot for long periods of time that is (at least 12 minutes).

Awesome stuff though! I hope they figure out a way to get an SSD recorder rigged up or something that can manage more data and possibly at faster speeds??

I do not know exactly how it works but in Europe there is very different import taxes on video cameras and still cameras, video = more tax. So canon 5D is a still camera, then let your conspiracy mind free and think that the ML guys are actually not hackers but just something canon has let loose to be able to get cameras into europe at lower price and also have release these "firmware updates" in a very noticeable way, and further more get to cancel all warranties on updated cameras, if that was the case you have to admit it would be quite clever :)

Damn. You just blew my mind!!!

In next move Nikon will release "D800 RAW" with SSD module, then they will cinevise Nikon glass and on top they will add some nasty flaring Nikon anamorphic glass :D :D
Then they will work on improving that nasty rolling shutter. :)

... and Canon will spent fortune on headache painkillers.

Do you remember Andromeda? That smart guy got small fortune to quit with it and to keep his mouth shut forever ... Damn what a waste!

All Canon engineers must be so frustrated to see how their hard work and creativity is wasted and because they cant share their thrill and work with others like ML guys do.

Wow I didn't even think about that! Yes, Hydra was swept under the rug before it began. Look at this eerie thread. Someone even mentions "Imagine if someone could do this to DSLRs..." little did he know four years later it would happen, for free! Damn, now you got me thinking someone might try and shut ML down. ;-)

I looked at a bunch of the footage and played with a dng file
Here are my findings so far.
- the raw does indeed add a lot of dynamic range so it's much easier to grade. For example skies
- There seem to be nasty moire going on, more than usually on 5D. I think that is the reason it's sharper than the h264 Canon 5d footage.
- Most of the tests on the net are CRAP as usual. Be careful in trusting them.
- There seem to be other problems going on in the image. I found strange artifacts in many of the images, rings around details, lots of dots and lines etc.
- It makes a big difference that we don't see the h264 compression. It eats up a lot of detail.
- The 5d is still soft but it's better than with h264.

All in all if one can figure out a smooth workflow with it then it seems useful to me as a B or C camera. I use the 5D now as a second camera sometimes, but it always cringes in me.

All in all interesting.

And do you remember that scam when some strange dude promised 4K video from DSLR and even Philip Bloom joined to that hype? :) That was total scam, and now its almost for real. Unbeliveable!

imagine if he is pulling that out of 5d, what magic lantern would pull out of RED:)

Probably a lot less would be my guess. Each new Red release adds features to our cameras. Amazing what they are doing wit time-lapse etc. One major problem with a lot of these RAW cameras are they are not REDCODE Raw!

I've been wondering if magic lantern is actually Red in disguise.

Since the industry seems to drag its feet, they've just decided to open the floodgates and make everybody's cameras 4k. :)

Doing your own sensor recorder.

Yeah, I spoke with Jaun many years ago about using it in my own commercial camera product. The company was sold, as often happens to make some money. It was doomed to fail, because nit only was it expensive and exclusive, but ultimately because the dvx 100 and hvx 200 were doomed to be replaced, and at any time a model upgrade could produce issues with the existing conversion on new cameras, requiring a redesign.

But the truth, is it is simple to do, in a way that could be used for many cameras universally. Once you can isolate the digital or analogue video output of the sensor before it is compressed, you can record it. You could do this on the $49 fullhd elcheapo consumer camera I have, at 3k. To make it simpler you can map some of this to a fulhd or uhd hdmi recorder. The main part is to convert the anlogue or digital levels to data for the HDMI input, so you don't have to do the recorder. You don't have to time the frames too much, a buffer to split the sensor frames over ont the HDMI frames. Also Bayer is a third the resoltio of 4:4:4, so 4k 4:4:4, provides an extra two 4k channels over Bayer 4k, so a 6k Bayer might fit into the three channels. But it all requires the right recorder etc.

"imagine if he is pulling that out of 5d, what magic lantern would pull out of RED:)"

Most of the tool were borne out need to make the 5D more usable.

+) False colours - shamelessly nicked from Marshal & Small HD ... and only two hours to code in optimised ARM code.
+) Real time magnification of part of the image - to allow focus on a small screen
+) Edge detection - for focal plane
+) Zebra's (probably would have implemented traffic lights if anyone would had suggested it)
+) Not sure if anyone actually used it ... but a Green / Blue screen calibration tool.
+) Alex added a whole load of photo tools (trap focus, real time de-fish eye).

With RED, you know that there is another tireless team making dreams a reality ... you can put down the hacker's hat, and put your wish list on RU. In terms of hanging fruit ... I wonder if triggerable high speed to memory could get a burst frame rate > 1000 fps (maybe sustained with a 32GB RAM expansion?). If the gyro data is accurate - might be interesting if the data could be externalised in realtime (active damping). Maybe even team up with a Kessler-esque for Red driven motion control...

Gee... hopefully you'll remember planet5D for better stuff than those posts! :)

This is all about how thin can be border between scam and real breakthru, not about how good or bad you are with your opinion. :)
Because nowaday no one knows what to expect tommorrow. Red used to be total vaporware :D

ANDREAS DID YOU TEST THE 5DMll or 5DMlll??

I didn't get the moire (fairly clean) with the 5dmlll but with the 5dmll there was a lot more moire...

Everything with a computer inside is more capable than what it's designed (limited) to do including all RED cameras. What magic lantern is doing is so incredible and shows what can be truly done with the hardware - they will push it even more with time that's for sure.

Remember the TRS-80 / Tandy COCO 3 ? They had very rudimentary graphics back in the days... well people today are programming on these old 80ies computers enabling 256 colors, sprites scrolling and 3D vector animations. Can you imagine if you would have seen these graphics / animations in 1986?

With that said I love my Scarlet and I'm getting an Epic X soon :)
