  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Magic lantern... Dude.

That's perhaps because I was not talking and subjective elements such as "perception" and "relative".
The point I am making is that "cropping" sensor DOES NOT change DoF.
Take your Epic / Scarlet / RED ONE and shoot the same scene in various resolutions. Then take the highest resolution frame and crop it in Photoshop to match the sizes of the smaller resolutions. You will end up with IDENTICAL images. Period.
It is the consequences of the change in FoV (not DoF) that forces one to change the lens and/or camera position - which then have the direct effect on DoF...

Guns do not kill people. People kill people...

:sifone: Peter

You are of course right (and thus the "perception".

That info is of little use for many who just want to control what DOF looks like in a given frame, regardless of crop-factor.

Say when they need a highspeed shot of the same frame and need to crop and match DOF between the shots for edits.

Up to 100 fps, they can of course "just go 5k", but beyond that, this becomes an issue, and even though technical DOF doesn't change without changing the lens or aperture, the thing the viewer sees, will definitely not look similar if you go from say 5k to 2k...

Sometimes the practical consequence the way "many" use cameras and lenses are as relevant as the actual math and physics behind the explanations...
(even though I think it can be very good to know that part, too...)

I still want a dragon... and an epic monochrome... and every red accessory on the website..

i also want my daughter to grow up and be a microbial neuroscientific astronaut that discovers the cure for everything and solves all of the worlds problems... but.. i probably can't afford to send her to the right school for that either...

24p raw video, for a dslr... rugged... compact... battle tested... and easily replaceable (fiscally speaking)...

it's exciting just to think about...

that still won't replace the need we have for a Red... but... dang... to be able to have home movies in 24p raw... our lives will all be cinematic... that's cool...

Lets talk about the raw video here and leave the two pages of dof chat elsewhere.

It's a pretty astounding development, i agree that rolling shutter does seem to be the big question.

Jelly on a plate, wibble wobble wible wobble...

I've seen it on a whip pan and it fitted in the category of "Yikes!"

I've noticed all the shots were still, even the relatively still handheld shot looked like it had some issues. Curious, are they recording to compact flash? Probably will not get much record time with Uncompressed RAW on compact flash.

1000X CF..

Thank you very much

Came across this test....

Rolling shutter test around 1:16

Well i wont' be doing any whip pans... The increase in apparent resolution is incredible. And yes, i believe it was quoted at 3mb a frame for the 1080p stuff, fast cf cards (at up to 128GB) will be fine. It's not exactly a pressing need, but i'm interested if the door to high speed has been opened too.

EDIT: Apparently you don't even need the 1000x cards to record 1080p 24fps as the gentleman in who uploaded that video states his are still on the way.

I guess the real question is, if this can be done with $2.5k hardware (comparatively weak processing) how can anyone charge so much for raw video? Just read that ~3k 16:9 maybe doable, and the only thing preventing the entire FF35 sensor from being dumped is the write speed of CF cards, otherwise it'd be possible.

Basically doing what RED does, but doing no debayering onboard (just dumping raw sensor data continuously and letting the PC sort it out afterward.). I wonder what that means for previews on the card/camera? Makes sense, as spitting out the raw data should technically be easier than compressing to even jpeg, much less a debayered CR2 for previewing (assuming it doesn't have dedicated hardware to do that.)

if you dont' do any debayering you don't have any kind of preview except through an optical viewfinder, which takes a certain design approach. also, 'raw' can be used in a lot of different ways - there's 'real' raw, which you probably don't want, there's RGB 4:4:4, compressed raw, and many other flavors. this stuff on the 5d is highly unstable and has some insane artifacts... it's not designed for this kind of use - it's not even designed for anything other than taking stills, video was an afterthought/hack by canon themselves tapping into the live view, which was intended for the process of still photography.

the devil's in the details. on a technical level, 4k+ is at least 4x the data of HD... on a practical level, the quality of a camera is much more than technical specifications. canon makes some really useful equipment. use it if you like. i'm not sure why discussion about cameras always turns into a versus or even a conspiracy thing...

Continuous RAW from 5D MkIII now possible

Continuous RAW recording out of Canon 5D MkIII
http://www.eoshd.com/content/10324/big-news-hands-on-with-continuous-raw-recording-on-canon-5d-mark

Lead in to the article:

"I have no other words to describe it – this is huge news.

Magic Lantern have done the seemingly impossible and given us a continuous raw recording mode on the Canon 5D Mark III. Once activated in the menus the 5D Mark III becomes essentially a full frame Blackmagic Cinema Camera and amazingly mine has not yet exploded. No more short bursts of raw, this is the real thing.

The image is leaps and bounds ahead of any other DSLR. We’re talking Alexa / Red league here, yet full frame. The first ever raw video shooting full frame camera at that. I’m getting continuous recording at a data rate to the card of 90MB/s and the camera hardly breaks into a sweat."

Simply Amazing. No ways around it :-)

Canon needs to get their shit together on their cinema/ DSLR video line. They are continuously getting embarrassed by ML exploiting how much MORE potential these cameras pack! I wouldn't be surprised the slightest if they can some how pull a 4k or 5k RAW stream out of a 1D-X. The main roadblock here are the CF cards.

I would love if somehow someone would develop a kickstarted based around the 5d iii and/ or 1D-X to somehow figure out a way to implement an SSD drive stream onto these cameras. Kind of like hot-rod cameras where you send in your camera to get it modded....send it in to get an SSD module or some kind of link installed.

Just my imagination playing. So what genius engineer wants to start this venture with me? I'm sure Canon would sue us but what the hell ;-)

Why the 1DC?

The 1DX looks like a way more interesting price-wise and for sure it is worthy for a try.

Andrew Reid said on his 5DIII test, today:

"On my 1000x card anything up to 87MB/s is pretty reliable, no skipped frames.

Full 3.5K lasts about 2 seconds before the buffer fills up and the card can't keep up.

Dropping to a still very respectable 2560 x 720 at 24fps seems to work well, no buffer overflows.

I don't think Canon is being embarrassed by ML. If anything I would expect Canon should not interfere with ML. Let's not forget what happens if all these cameras end up overheating and become paperweights. Canon can always say they are not covered by warranty and buy another. You were using the camera not as intended or warranted. As much as I would love to use this ML on my 5D I think I will let the dust settle and let everyone else be the guinea-pig for a good while.

Now its another thing regarding pricing... After all that has happened in the last year I would say Canon is due for dropping the price to stay competitive. But that is another story.

Shyte, thats what I meant! I was thining the 1DX body/ price in my brain but typed 1DC! I agree wholeheartedly ;-)
