  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Macgregor and crew, Salt Flats Utah

mac your work is awsome... brilliant pictures, moves and decomposition...

does anbody know more shorts like this online available???

regards rainer

Anyone who operated on this/these shoots care to comment on just having the LCD and hoodman for monitoring. How did that work out? Did you long for the EVF? Etc...

What I've seen looks great and in focus so it's obviously possible to work with just the LCD, but It'd be nice to know what your opinions are. Thanks in advance and thanks for sharing the beautiful footage.

ya... the way to work right now is just with the LCD, as you can't feed another monitor at the same time... we had a ecinema display on set, but when we switched to HDSDI out, the LCD would not be fed. So we had to stick with the LCD. Mac is the genius with shot composition, and our genius Camera Op/1st AC Pedro did a crazy job with focusing.

PS setting marks in the salt was pretty easy...

I'm glad you said that... I was suffering through aloe applications daily and it seemed like everyone else was mostly immune to the conditions. The high winds on those couple of days played hell on my face and the mics.

Mike... you've been getting lots of compliments on your photos. I've made sure to credit you with all the shots that you took. Thanks again.

EDIT TO ADD:

Macgregor... I would like to thank you for having me on board for this project. To say that I enjoyed the entire cast and crew is an understatement. Previous to this gig I was in LA for a week and I expected that trip to feel more like a vacation then work... and it was quite the opposite. For your shoot I expected it to be all work and no vacation... and yet I enjoyed that week as much as any vacation I've ever had.

Thanks to this project we were all able to see an amazing place which could never sustain interest for an entire week... but with the constant purpose in being there we were all focused on the same goal of trying to produce the best product possible. It was this sense of purpose which kept the location fresh and beautiful to me the entire time.

When I say I was honored to work with you guys on this... that may sound like a generic remark, but it means a lot more. The quality of the cast and crew was very impressive... as professionals and as people. You may not remember me saying that "you can't buy perception" but what I meant by that is we each play the lead in our own lives, but it's the supporting characters that we must rely on for our life story to be satisfying. I could not have cast and scripted a better week.

I found it fitting that our last meal together was a buffet where everybody was allowed to choose their meal according to their own tastes... because I always tell people that I like everything. That project for me, was like having each person filling a spot on my plate and then having a dinner of wonderful surprises. < Haha! Sounds... uh... Sorry... but it's true.

Julie!!! Matt!!!! thanks again for such a great week! Hope Mac can post a new clip soon. Just saw Brook tonight.

Nice!!!

Nice!!!

I have been following this thread for a while now and would like to say how impressed i am seeing the capabilities of great gear paired with a natural eye for composition.
Thanks for the great footage and keep us posted what happens with this film. I am looking forward to seeing it now.
Mike

Hi Macgregor,

Thanks for continuing to share your footage; it's looking great and definitely some of the better stuff shot with RED (that anyone is publicly showing, anyway). This clip looks to be a lot more heavily compressed, but we've seen the quality in other shots so it's clear that it's the codec degrading the image here and not the camera itself.

I'm curious, what shutter speed did you use and did you use it throughout? I meant to ask the other day after seeing the girl face down on the ground, but never got around to it. There is an interesting look to the motion - I like it in some places, and others not as much. The car driving by the mountain in particular - while the shot itself is rather beautiful - looks quite stroby to me.

Also, did you say you used superspeeds on this project? This is some of the sharpest RED footage I've seen, but wow do they breathe. I'm still trying to decide if I want to purchase the 18-50 yet or not; the range is a bit limiting for my tastes. Have you used it at all, and if so, what are your impressions compared to the lenses you shot "Engagement" with?

Thanks again for taking the time to post some decent clips - you deserve kudos just for that.

I have not used the red zoom.
I used the RED 300m for the end of the shortfilm, to give it a different look.
THe 300 is sharp and feels smooth BUT has some chroma aberrations even when closing it down to f5.6.

Shutter speed was set at 1/500 for some reasons that you will understand when you watch the final film. XD

I imagine in that sun and glaring white ground, a 1/500 shutter played nicely to a technical advantage as well. :-)

Thanks for being willing to share.

You and me both, buddy.

Be careful, you might be getting a call from me in ten days or so. :)

haha what's with brook and that flag?

It was windy enough that the camera had to be guarded from the wind to prevent too much shaking. It was also windy enough that the flag was basically a sail.

oww, I still have windburn on my cheeks, and now I'm peeling.... :(

My lips are done for... it was way too windy out there.
...it seemed like everyone else was mostly immune to the conditions.

Heh... I guess that's me. Still white as ever.

Oh yeah guys... remember how I was trying to figure out how I was going to schedule that other job in? I just got home tonight. I'm in need of some sleep.

Stunning footage. I think this camera is cleaner (in terms of low image noise) than just about anything else shooting motion pictures now, but it is sometimes almost too good.

Meaning that the people making player software (H.264 etc.) are going to have to go back to the drawing board and add in dithering to avoid banding artifacts. I'm thinking that many people aren't used to seeing footage this clean, it shows up the limitations of the players.

Apple will have to get QuickTime to realize 4:4:4 chroma format (it only does 4:2:0 currently) and achieve 10bits (or more). We will likely see it when the update for FCP arrives.

MacGregor,

By far the most beautiful cinematography and images I've seen come from the RED thus far. Great work. Also, you mentioned you didn't like the Zeiss Superspeeds because they were soft, but from what I can see perhaps they softened up the hard edges of the image to make it feel a little more organic? Either way, the tonality is Incredible.

Good luck with the project.
Todd

P.S. By the way, what range of focal lengths did you settle on with the Zeiss's for the project?
