  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Macgregor and crew, Salt Flats Utah

As for ISO:

On a DSLR, your ISO floor is usally 100. You can go higher, but you'll get more noise. Generally [but not always], 100 is as low as you can go.

With RED, think of 320 ASA as your floor. You can go higher, but you'll get more noise. With RED, you *can* go lower [to get lower shadow noise by exposing more, as an example], but if you go *too* low, you start to clip highlights. You're shifting the same sensitivity window of the camera over... if you go too far, you'll clip.

Remember, there's always a chance I'm completely wrong... but this is my understanding. Thinking this way has helped me expose properly so far.

I don't really think of it in terms of ASA. I just expose as far to the right as possible with whatever my situation is. If my meter says to shoot at a 4.0 but I'm not filling the high end of my histogram... screw it - I'm opening up more. If it says to shoot at a 4.0 but I'm clipping highlights... I'm stopping down.

Just don't forget your NDs. And get GOOD ND filters - if you have to stack [or use a very dense ND], you'll have to deal with a color shift and contrast loss. Not that you won't be able to save it in post... but smoke 'em if you got 'em.

I just wanted to chime in here very quickly, and say that it was lots of fun to spend some time on the set of Engagement. Great to meet you Brook--you are indeed the Red Ninja! Thanks for putting up with all my questions.

Nice to finally meet Mac. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him do his thing.

Lastly, it was great to see the Red in action. There are so many things to rave about, but I'm still dumbfounded by the notion that all that gorgeous 4K imagery is being recorded to CF cards. Just pop 'em in the reader and download to a laptop. Truly mind boggling.

Here are a few pics I snapped from the location. Btw Mike, very nice BTS pics!

Gorgeous weather today... I'm in the truck downloading and they're shooting up a storm out there. Today the last day... This is the best looking RED footage I've seen. Wait till you guys see it. :)

Hi Brook,

This could be very good advice under uncontrollable conditions, such as daytime
exteriors. Nevertheless, under absolutely controlled conditions where we can
decide where the highlights would be, we could expose for the shadow and adjust
the whites so that it falls under desirable range.

I think the same applies to the flip side of this. If I am shooting in fairly controllable
daytime exterior environment, such as my subject placed in front of a background
object rather than the open air, I could bring up the shadow areas not to
underexpose too much. By choosing the locations carefully, this could be achieved.

Of course, if the producer or director insists of a location or a very wide shot that is not in
favor of us DP's, a compromise will be made for the narrative, budget, or in this case,
the amazing look of the location, etc.

Sorry for this long topic unrelated post. I just wanted throw my opinion in the air
and see what others think.

Just to give you an idea what the real artists like Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Gus Van Sants and Harris Savides A.S.C. were doing at the same location in 2001/2002 shooting "Gerry" movie.

If you start to sell what ever it is you are hopped up on you could put the Columbian drug cartels out of bussiness real quick.

Can´t wait to see the stuff ! What is it, any way ? A commercial ? A short ? Two different productions ?

The primary production is a short. We may have had some other fun too.

Just to give you an idea what the real artists...

Ignoring the phrasing, I bet our "quality":dollar ratio is a shade better. It's a 12-man crew including actors. :)

Are we going to be able to see the entire film sometime or is this for submission to some place?

.. and for those who know, is the permit fee expensive to shoot in the flats?

Hi, no, it is not for free. There are tons of papers to fill.

The shortfilm will be finished and downloadable in 1080p as soon as REDCINE is available. Right now, RED Alert would make the editing impossible or at least quite slow, since we have a lot of footage to render to DPX and render times are too long.

The proxy quicktimes are very nice, but dont have enough quality for making a final product.

Hey Dvpixl, if you plan a trip let me know :)
I have wanted to shoot something out there but not with any cars in the shots since thats what everyone seems to do when they get there.
Not knocking shooting cars, just want to try something different.

I thought you can downconvert a proxy like in 720 and then replace to 4k when time to render?
