  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Macgregor and crew, Salt Flats Utah

Hi,

Just been reading this thread and the salt flats footage is looking promising, and I look forward to possibly seeing more of it. Good work and thanks for sharing.

But, what are you talking about Sanjin? Constructive criticism of a shoot is one thing but your comments seemingly lack anything remotely resembling this. This footage is better than much that has been posted so far, if only because more time and energy has been spent in shooting it. I don't see you posting such comments about others work so is this some sort of personal attack on those involved? Either way please stop or be more constructive with your comments.

OK guys I already stopped.

But it was not about the footage technically (I already said that was a great footage).

It was something about an idea to shoot in a location that was already taken before from one another great movie.

The location (Utah Salt Lake) for that movie (Gerry) was a crutial part of the original story.

If you use this location with almost close to similar story or intention and put it in a commercial that altogether looks as a pure FAKE.

RED needs something original in these days of birth, something like Soderbergh or Jackson did it.

That's all folks.

A movie that nobody has ever seen?

Hey guess what! Someone shot the brooklyn Bridge already in a movie, that means if YOU shoot it, you are a ripoff artist.

Bull

Shit.

You've got to be kidding me.

I guess no one should shoot in Los Angeles anymore... oh, and London is out of the question as well... and you know what, New Zealand shouldn't be shot in either....

Do you see the foolishness in your argument?

understood.. though to check the red properties, it's more than useful.. when i want to go to watch an well aesthetically finished piece of work, i'm going to an art film theatre..

Guys lets not pile on... and ruin this nice thread. Stop rubbernecking and move on... these arguments are becoming nonsensical and add nothing to the mix.

Be like water my friends...

Many of you dont understand that Macgregor has a history of duplicating others work. He almost shot-for-shot duplicated scenes without credit from Tim Robbins' movie "Code 43" for a short he did named " Silo " and entered a contest with it on Dvxuser. he was disqualified for that.

Its not just using the same location, its using the same location, with actors that look the same, and shots that are replicated with movement and angles.

Im not saying that he is doing something wrong or right, its not my place to do so. He is pretty guilty of plagiarism, but he does a damn good job of it.

Location means a half of the movie.

There are specific locations that could drive you only in one way.

L.A., Brooklyn Bridge, Chinese Wall, Eiffel Tower, Venezia could drive you in a many ways as you want.

But Zabriskie Point, Death Valley, Sahara, Goby, Namibia, all deserts, even salt deserts could drive you just in one way >> to inner or outer fata morgana.

Film is a metaphoric media anyway.

That's about the location in a film language.

No Brandon, actually, no. By now, Sanjin should have a lot of fun with comments like this one. Did you ever read Deleuze by any chance? It would be quite useful. I can guarantee that's the most appreciated scholar in the best film schools around the world. Including the american ones.

No, I get it... I see your point quite well and empathise w/ you. Though I did always wonder what the full backstory on that was...thank you ;-). But now that you mention it, I did see "Code 43"...

I just think all these things lead to the larger implication of why we are not seeing more footage from people... and why many more will not post footage in the not so distant future for fear of getting their heads ripped off.

that's the point Mr. Benz.. that's why it's suicide what sanjin is doing.. sometimes, he's a distract poster..
:poster_oops:
philosopher..

Mac always seems to create a stir wherever he goes... I am getting flashbacks of Silo all over again :)

Passion :)

I did not know anything about that. If it's true is good to know.

By coincidence "L'abécédaire de Gilles Deleuze" just comfortable on my desk.

Well despite criticism, when I get my Red, I will post whatever. Criticism, whether it be constructive or not, shouldn't turn a filmmaker off. It should turn them right on.

That being said, Sanjin, I can't wait to see what you produce.

nice pic sanjin, as matter of fact.. :)

Canon Macro Lens EF 100mm 1:2.8 on Canon EOS 30D.

Looking forward to get Birger's EOS mount for RED as soon as available.

My goodness. I'm not sure that leveling charges of plagiarism in this way is appropriate at all. I've seen Code 43 several times. I love that movie. And I've watched MacGregor's short, Silo, about 20 times and I love that short too. And while the short might be inspired aesthetically by Code 43, they bear almost no resemblance in terms of story (uh, they're both set in the future, and they both have a scene in a car). The term "plagiarism" implies an illegal/immoral activity. But being inspired by really great work and trying to incorporate those inspirations into your own work is what every artist does as he evolves. Often we're not aware of how these inspirations affect our work; other times it's a very conscious effort to make reference to another movie. Many highly respected filmmakers make deliberate reference to scenes, blocking, lighting, story points or locations of other movies.

Oh, and about 1000 car commercials were shot on the Salt Flats before Gus Van Sant (whom I love) filmed "Gerry" there. I don't think Van Sant was ripping off Ford Motor Company. It's a spectacular location. Full stop.
