  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M-X Reel

Finally, with the new color management between RedColor and RedGamma, the color separation during offline was much more pleasant to work with than I'm used to with RedSpace. This also improved the offline process a great deal. What's even more impressive is this even improved the DI process because for the first time in DI (for us at least) we were able to work in the same color space in grading as we were in offline. Because I don't recommend RedSpaceRedSpace as a DI starting point, dailies and DI rarely saw the same images. With RedColorRedGamma, we are now speaking the same language, which again, translates to a powerful, seamless handshake between offline and DI.

Hey Michael,

Thanks for the update. Can you speak about your process for the cut/DI? Did you use RC-X to color this or do you have the new colorspace working in Pablo?

Best,

T

yes, would be great to get some low-light shots with the 2/3 sensor!

been wondering the same thing for a while now(2/3" low light performance) and to my knowledge red hasn't commented on this despite the question coming up multiple times in other threads.
great to see the 18mm rpp shots, hope the 6mm mini prime looks that good!

It's4k here but I'm not sure those stills got a full debayer. I'm seeing above average bayer artifacting, or maybe I'm just doing an above average amount of grading. :)

DI Process

DI Process

Hey Michael,

Thanks for the update. Can you speak about your process for the cut/DI? Did you use RC-X to color this or do you have the new colorspace working in Pablo?

Best,

T

Todd,
The dailies were processed in RCX. For the DI, the files were imported into Pablo, which does support the MX footage natively. So we used our normal Pablo auto-conform for 4K debayering and conforming of XML exports from FCP. Grading was done with 4K files at fullres/high and we did not use any noise reduction-Pablo or otherwise. So what you see on the projection is what the sensor saw.
I should clarify with my comment to sensitivity:
With the lens wide-open, the images on the monitor and EVF were brighter than the room was to the eye. Similar to how things look on 1/3" chips cameras like the PD170.

As for grading, Gavin- these images are pre-processed with gamma correction - so they no longer hold the dynamic range of the source R3Ds by any means. Using these files to evaluate in grading is not a good idea and will not show you the results that you get from the RAW files where they came from. These images are a full debayer and can show how clean the noise floor is demonstrate that there is no aliasing in the shirt or the car. that is the only intent I have in sharing these images.
Make sense?

Yet people still buy F35s!? I don't get it.

Heh, not for much longer....

I would love to have that sensor in just a still camera....

Hmmmm.....RED could clean up just selling still cameras...

Imagine a still camera that could convert and accept RED, PL, Nikon or Canon
lenses....

Sorry Todd. So do the tiffs not show the dull dynamic range?

BTW, HOLY SMOKES... that shirt looks CLEAN! Though with so much detail it actually looks like it needs a wash with a touch of bleach. ;P
What blows me away is how much separation there is between the black beanie close to the light and the white wall in the BG.

holy suitcase! I just lifted the middle of the dark room Benji frame and can see everything! Unfawking believable RED! I can only imagine how creamy the R3D's are! ( I prefer the original grade obviously... but just giggling over what's down deep.... )

We could call it Epic:)

It makes sense. But I wasn't really evaluating them for grading per say just to see what the noise looked like. That 4:1 close up on the Audi steering wheel though was straight rec709 of the blue channel though. And it looks like it's in all the shots to some degree. It could certainly cause some moire/aliasing on that steering wheel if the scalar gets confused by Solid Blue/Black checkering in the source material. But if the footage was pre-graded it might just be a subtle bayer artifact boosted several orders of magnitude by the gamma correction.

:willy_nilly: I KNOW!!!

But what is the ISO on the tiff? It looks so dark.

I am having some fun too. Please let us know if these should be taken down.
I am sure you will understand how hard it is to keep our paws off these!
