  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M-X Reel

This was awesome. Really enjoyed watching it. The new sensor is going to be incredibly helpful while waiting for Epic X.

Dino, you are the man! Kudos to everyone involved in making this.
 
I thought it looked great. Only issues I saw were with the web delivery format, already been discussed -- moire and some aliasing.

Would love to see a proper 2K version. Hopefully the RED NAB event will show this and more on the new Sony 4K projector. I want to see it projected in all its glory, but won't be able to make RED Day on 2/13.
 
Yes I would love to download a 1080p version, if possible.

You are correct. Too bad Sony does not manufacture wives, also making that choice easier for me. Hint hint Sony. Expand your product line. Sony is great. Glory be Sony.

Let's remember that the future is sparkly, but we work in the now. and even if we make projects that will work for 4 k, the income always comes from lowest denominator. Web, DVD, Bluray....

I think we ( the whole community, but especially us new Scarlet Guys ) will be reducing workflows like crazy for awile, because the need for efficiency and turnaround time is important for paying the bills as well as staying out of the way of creativity.

In fact, i feel the need to overstate this. I will only shoot HD... usually 1080 hd, but i will never shoot "only for 40" HD home tvs". Most of my delivery is high quality web or dvd. and web currently looks better! so no scary statements about "it should really only be seen at 4k". ;-)

btw, none of this is a criticism of the new reel. Just a note that the multi-program, multi-step post process will not be acceptable for a lot of us, so it will be fun to see what we do.

this reel is AMAZING! ready for scarlet. My jobs are all approved and the money is in.

Looks great. Can you share a little information on how the metal man piece was shot in terms of lights? Did you use any additional lights or was it all practicals?

Hmm... it looks pretty good, but not really a big step up from the Red One... maybe it needs to be seen in a bigger quicktime file? Or maybe it needs some color correction?
 
I don't think it's fair to say that the most money can be earned by shooting for "the lowest common denominator" in terms of resolution.

The guys who shoot "Sunrise Earth," for example, have made tens of millions of dollars using F900s to shoot for the highest common denominator at the time - 1080p for Bluray and HDTV. Those "Sunrise Earth" guys are raking in HUGE amounts of cash by simply pointing high-def cameras at interesting subjects.

4K and 3D are next.

I am not sure we are disagreeing. In my list i said lowest denominator was Web, DVD, BluRay.

and to be clear, I am all about shooting in the best format you can, even if it is downrezzed. Those silly statements that "it is going to be on dvd, so SD cameras will look just as good as HD" were amazingly laughable.

But to answer your example, and i haven't seen the books, I don't think that there is more money being brought in by Sunrise Earth than your more broad audience TV shows or movies. I was just tying to remind ourselves of where most people are watching their content RIGHT NOW. and right now does mean the next few years as well....

As both Scarlet S35 and 2/3 will get this M-X sensor, i have a question...
Will the 2/3-3K be as good as the S35-5K in low light ?

Smaller sensors usually dont like low light and tend to produce noise but as it's "only" 3K, maybe (at least i hope so) we keep the same light abilities...?

yes, would be great to get some low-light shots with the 2/3 sensor!
