  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I suppose that we all guess on what may come next or what the next update will be, but do you really think that Scarlet will be the focus. I've never seen so many people base their business plan on a piece of equipment that isn't available with no schedule of delivery. Seems like wishful thinking about Scarlet but I would imagine that the next update is likely to be about Epic.

more time to sleep

Sorry Jim, but I keep thinking that Red are behaving a little like a certain company based in Cupertino. Slip out a totally vague but aggressive bit of PR and let the rumour mill band it around for a while. I know this certain fruit company has the NYSE, SEC and a billion NDA's to satisfy, but to be honest it's a pretty disgusting way to treat current and future customers, especially those trying to make informed business decisions. I own several of their products but will try very hard not to buy another as their delivery and support are disappointing and non-existent respectively.

So please, don't play these marketing games and waste everybody's time, lest I start to draw comparisons with the said corporation.

When you have something to say or deliver, say it or deliver it. Or as the saying goes, 's**t or get off the pot'.

Good luck with the Scarlet and Epic. When you're ready, I'll be interested, until then, get more sleep.

Toby, why are you so reluctant to use the name Apple? Just wondering.

I don't see the comparison, personally. For marketing reasons, Apple doesn't tell us a thing about their products until they are released. If RED was Apple, we would still have the RED ONE as the only product and REDRUMORS.COM would be sending wild speculation about something called "EPIC" or Tattoo which is REALLY BIG, but with no other firm information.

With RED, we basically know what their product road map is, and we know what they are planning to achieve, and we know they have an excellent track record in meeting or exceeding specifications. We don't know exact specifications because RED doesn't know them yet. But we know enough to have an excellent idea of whether we want the new products or not.

With all due respect for your frustration, which I can definitely understand in the deadline-driven movie industry, I don't think there's any reason to be upset by RED. They have told us everything they know, and that their products will be ready when they are.

I can't see what they could do differently and still be real.

Now they do have one thing important in common with Apple: They try to do Great Things, to be unique and special. Very few products that are unique and special get created on precise time schedules. If you want that, go to a camera maker that creates their next model that is incrementally better than the previous one, instead of one trying to make a revolution.

Wow. I can see why Jim gets irritated at times. Poor guy.

Well, not really poor exactly since he has a beautiful wife, a lovely jet and the coolest job in the world. But I think you get my point :).

I think the majority of us disagree. We love the open participation here. It may take longer then we expected... or even Jim did, however we know what we are in store for. Canon can jump light years ahead by giving a raw codec or a better codec, but we know nothing of what they have in store. We assume that at someone is working on it, but we have no way of knowing.

We know we are in for a dame good camera when scarlet comes out. If panasonic or sony beats them to the punch, or gives me even a good 2k camera with a proress like codec, then my money will go there. If the codec is lacking, then no chance. 99% sure even is sony and panasonic come out with something, the quality of the codec will suck.

Marketing gimmick, no way. They don't stand to gain anything.

The fact of the matter is that we have been haply spoiled with Jim spilling the beans since day -1..

So it makes it hard to adjust to the new policy of telling after it is done..

But adjust we must..

All I can say is that RED is stronger then ever as a Workhorse of Hollywood, and gaining a stronger momentum yet in Europe and Asia, as well as Latin America.

As far as how the Epic-X and Scarlet and a all bunch of other S%$#@^#$ that is coming, that is moving along just fine and I much prefer see (actually not see) Jim here and see him at hard work in Red Studio Hollywood and every were else together with Jarred, as I know I will appreciate their work much more there then here ;)

I have complete faith and trust in what they have been doing since day one, and I have it now more then ever before, and am SUper exited about what is coming, even so the Doctor told me to stay come and off the board, he he..

Well we at least know at this point that they have a working production prototype of Scarlet fixed that can produce a pretty decent image.
We know they have working Epic prototypes in the field, maybe even some Tattoos, that will be used on at least one major feature production starting in September.
We know they have already released the Bomb EVF, and new storage media options for Epic, Scarlet, and R1 can't be too far off since they stopped selling new Red Ram and Red Drives.
We don't know what other elements of the modular system are already near or in production just waiting for QC and release dates. There seem to be some number of side handles floating around out there anyway attached to the working prototypes we have seen.
We don't know much about any issues Red may still have with suppliers.
We know that they have gotten past one major software bug, but we don't know what else they are battling on that front. If they have time to address new features like HDR though, the basic feature sets must be pretty solid by now. I think Jim or Jarred mentioned that the program for the fixed lens was pretty challenging, but the video of the auto focus function on the Canon lens suggests that they could have the basics pretty solid there too.

I'm optimistic that they are getting very close on both Epic and Scarlet. Then again I am an incurable optimist, I thought we would have Scarlet by 1st quarter of this year. :thumbup1:

I think a lot of the frustration that some feel stems from the post a couple weeks back telling us to pay attention, and then...silence.

Hopefully, the silence ends soon. And ends with something concrete. :thumbup1:

David,
Point taken.

My frustration is with these 'heads up' messages that achieve very little but to keep people chatting about the if and when of the next product.

Do you really think poor Jim gets a chance to enjoy his 'beautiful wife, lovely jet and coolest job in the world' ;)

It's curious why people seem so bitterly contemptuous of a company that sells products everyone loves (evidenced by massive sales) and which has returned very large returns to its investors for a very long time - with no end in sight. Jealousy? I don't get it. Maybe if YOU had owned the stock since it was in its teens, you'd feel better about it. :emote_happyhappy:

And RED has every likelihood of being just as successful. So exactly what is it they are doing so wrong?

Back from a two week test... should have more EPIC news soon.
