  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Helix vs. DJI Ronin - Pros and Cons???

I think Zeb hit the nail on the head when he said the current Ronin looks more suited for a Canon 1D C/ GH4...

I actually with all do respect of course I could NOT disagree any stronger with the both of you in this silly assessment of the Ronin!!!

I have tested and heavily put to work 4 of the know Gimbals and 2 of the ones which are less known, and while all of them had the capacity to hold a Epic+UP/CP2/CN-E/Still Glass+sideGrip/w/Redvolt...

NONE of them had the capacity to actually BALANCE properly a fully loaded Epic with longer lenses such as the Summilux C Primes or Schneider Xenon glass.

The RONIN is in fact the FIRST Gimbal that has show the possibility to do this, and NOW with the addition of the XL arm coming in it will also allow for actually placing even a XL Module or V-Lock Module on the drear of the camera it self.

Which I can't talk or say about how good might be to add power on the rear of the camera till is tested, but you will be able to do should you choose to do so with the XL Arm on the Ronin...

NOW... Back to the very SILLY comment above quoted...

The Ronin has been tested and re-tested with the Epic and various lenses as utilized with other Gimbals till now, including the Movi, and it has performed extremely well... Making the above statement as silly as they come!!

And actually very surprise that Zeb itself could make such a SILLY statement and that you Adam could agree to it!!

LOL! I love you Ketch!

It's all just guesswork at this point since no one has done any non-NDA reviews on either. Love to you brother and never lose that edge!

Love you too Zeb!

But I have seen the Ronin in action with the same set up load of the Movi as we used on RSH, so it can handle the Red Epic just fine, that is why I said it's Silly for you to now call it a DSLR Gimbal with out the XL arms...

Surprised actually...

Current distance for center of gravity adjustment on the Ronin is actually longer in it's current build then the Movi and or two other know Gimbals out there, and the adding of the RoninXL, which is nothing else but two longer arms, with proper cable management, and that could make it the only Gimbal to support fully set up Epic rigs with longer Cine lenses...

Of course this needs yet to be fully tested... But the Current Ronin has already been tested and shot with Epic cinema package with standard Cine lenses...

That is why I called Silly calling the Ronin a DSLR rig now...

Especially since you lead the Ronin Group buy which I think is great, considering that as soon as I seen the Ronin at NAB and talked to Willis, and short after to Pedro Guimarraes, my long time friend and Shooter on the presented short, and heard what He had to say, I become very serious about the Ronin and sow greatness in what DJI was bringing to market, and loved that such piece of fantastic gear was brought to Reduser so fast.

Any ways, each of us obviously have different opinions which is of course just fine...

At the end of the day I think we all are truly looking forward to the next month or so to go by and see more Gimbals tested and reviewed in detail and that will be a great day... :)

Looks like DJI is hooking you up Mate! That's awesome!! I can't wait to actually see a Ronin outside of a trade show environment. Seems like any day now they might pull the curtain back and give us basic specs and a look at the final design.

All good and I'm glad you are satisfied with your Ronin purchase. It's seems to be real solid and very easy to use.

A stripped down Epic with a smaller cinema lens might be OK on the Ronin for basic camera moves, but a fully decked out Epic with longer cinema primes will not fit properly or balance well on the current configuration. This is a fact. I think smaller camera bodies and still lenses will simply rock on it and not freak it out as easy. The XL arm will hopefully solve this and allow proper balancing of heftier rigs. But I know the Ronin WILL freak out with a decked out red epic and heavy/ longer prime. I will shut my mouth now before I get into trouble. We will see what the Ronin is truly capable of soon (I hope).

I think you will really like the Helix when you get a chance to try it out in its newest state. Zeb knows what I'm talking about ;)

I can't wait to see all of the BeSteady 4, Ronin, and Letus examples.

I can't go into detail but Letus is turning into my favorite company.

I don't see why the 3-axis Helix couldn't be underslung from a jib or heli. It's the same as holding it in low mode that way which was recently demonstrated.

I asked a lot about that ability when I first saw the rig. It would look pretty much just like the little zenmuse H3-3D used on the Phantom 2, just bigger. They just need to make a mounting bracket for the side handle (which would then be the top handle). And you could remove the other handle for more clearance if shooting straight down (if the back of the sled clears...).

The 4th axis looks like it's mostly for steadicam arm mounting.

I am in process to order Ronin or Helix.
I travel a lot. I do not care if product is $3,000 or $4,000. I must have RELIABLE system which will LAST.
Ronin is about 30Kgs heavy when packed to travel. Helix does look interesting. We do not have any Dealer stocking Ronin or Helix in Sydney, so any further advice is very welcome.
Thank You for you help.

*Runs for cover* In seriousness, Jiri, both systems are in their early days. There are dedicated threads for each that I'd recommend you look through and make a determination for yourself. Both sides are very passionate about each and that will come through in the threads.

;-)
I guess i might wait month or two, Thanks David.

Helix holds more than 16 lbs?

Someone call a veterinarian.

These Pythons are SICK!

GIMBAL READY BRUHHHHHHHHHH
I can shoot twice as stable with my Helix Mounted off an overslung Ronin Platform Dood

Dan . . . Bro, do you even lift? Real men are going with this package:

Custom Segway with EZ Rig / Flowcine Serene arm holding a Ronin with a Helix attached with a Canon IS lens then processed through AE Warp and CGI as needed. It's almost as smooth as a common dolly shot but way cooler to watch and argue about ;-)

Works like a charm... ;o)
E-mail me to peter(at)derylgroup(dot)com for a link to the footage - both from the camera and BTS of the above configuration...
Yet to see any such configuration on any other gimbal...

What I really want next is a wireless follow focus, something very light in preparation for the gimbal of choice when the time comes.

What are the top three focus and controllers right now, or soon?

The best choice by far is the RT Motion's MK.III
It has been proven reliable and has an amazing 1.5 km range (a huge plus for RC aerials)
Best bit - it has the smallest on-camera receiver / motor driver I have seen - similar in size to the Paralinx Arrow transmitter.
Only downside it seems is that it is hugely back ordered (no surprise there given how good it is)

The TILTA MAX (not yet released) seems like a no.2 choice if it lives up to the hype.
Seems solidly built with amazing hand controller and compatibility with 3-rd party motors, but the on-camera receiver is on the larger/heavier side when compared to the RT Motion.

I'm currently using the C-Motion's compact Camin, which is an amazing system with on-camera receiver/motor driver somewhere in the middle between the RTM and TILTA, but it is not cheap...

My suggestions are: Digital Bartech or the Axis1. Both with a small receiver footprint, and great track record. Can't go wrong with either one...
