  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Helix vs. DJI Ronin - Pros and Cons???

I will add that, if I ever invent something, I hope to have Terry VerHaar as my first customer.

I don't know anyone with more brand loyalty. heh... :001_cool:

Yes, I am loyal to "brand" but only to the degree if offers high value. That doesn't always mean lowest price or best product, just a superior combination of both.

I like to think of myself as hyper-analytical. I have tried to look at the details of the products I'd consider owning and come up with my own answer.

I bought several BMWs over the years, before they became yuppie cars, because I thought they were a superior automobile. I still admire the brand but haven't owned one in years as the image and the pricing no longer make them a value.

I bought one of the first Macintoshes in 1984 and, while Apple almost sunk the ship in the 90's, Microsoft IMO never offered a better solution. So I stuck it out due to momentum and got happy again in the late 90's.

I bought into RED as soon as I became knowledgeable about them (and they introduced an "affordable" model) because they seemed to do it better for a fair price. I don't love their brand "image" (tattoos and metal aren't my style) but I do love the value.

This product is one of those, IMO. A combination of superior concept, design and value. Yes, at this point, I believe in what they are doing.

Meryem - you might want to correct the typo in your post that says the Letus GB is $4099. Out of context, that could confuse someone.

wait I thought the ronin was $4499 for the group buy or is it $4499 retail and group buy is 10% of that?

that's what showed up on the thread, if you drill down.

again, these group buys are subject to all kinds of potential fluctuations, so do your own research and take this thread as a starting point to begin your own research, not a definitive answer.

I'm not paying strict attention to all the terms of Ronin. I'm not buying one.

Terry - it's not a typo. I'm not confusing people.

Here's the actual post.

(actually, I wasn't entirely accurate either. I said $4099 when the GB price is $4049.10)

again, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

and now, I'm outta this thread. I tried to do my part to educate, that is all. Gonna go wait by my mailbox for my Letus....

In post #19 you say this:

"Letus GB - base unit is $4099 and includes:"

(I'd quote it but I am on my iPhone and the usability sucks.)

That is an obvious typo. Just saying that out of context it might not be understood as such.

ok - I thought you were referring to the price, which was not a typo. "Letus" edited to "Ronin" - although with everything on the list marked Ronin individually, I hope folks could have sorted that bit out. But...done. Thanks.

The retail price of the Ronin is $4499…the group buy price is 10% off that…or roughly $4050.

EDIT: Steve beat me to it...

One of the issues with the Letus Helix, is that the forth axis integration hasn't been shown (as far as I know).
It's difficult to tell how you do a gimbal hand off, or attach to a rope/crane etc, without seeing it. I'm about to pull the trigger on a purchase, but its hard to without seeing these parts. I have little doubt Letus wil do a great job, but its frustrating not having access to this information, or photos or renders.

For what I saw, the two systems are completely different.

Can the Helix's motors be controlled remotely?(pretty sure that it's a no)
Seems as if the Helix is a one man operation(or two, if you have a focus puller)

Ronin has a remote control, that can control the pan and tilt movement(they're also supposed to be a joystick that can be added, so the operator can control it also) This might have applications for car mounts with a tilt/pan option

Yes - Helix can be controlled remotely or with joystick in the unit.

Also ideal for work on steadicam arm or from jib.

Really not ideal for heli, though.

I've been asking directly for this very thing. I feel confident that it will be revealed shortly. They are working like mad to fulfill our requests.

Are these representations of the 4th axis not adequate for
initial evaluation? Short of hands-on, of course.
