  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Hi Shen,

The V.2 motors for the Helix is slightly stronger than the old one.

I see. So the v.2 is capable of pulling off between 16 lb (advertised payload) to maybe 20lb?
Also, I am wondering to your knowledge, if there are anyways to tell if a Helix is Mg version just from appearance?

Thanks for your time GT Le !

For optimal operation, I would still recommend keeping the load at 12-14 lbs.

It would be hard to tell the Mg version from AL version in the picture. Mg has a rougher finish and is lighter.

Has anyone gone with v mount setup instead of jb? I do not own a Helix, but am right on the cusp of purchasing one. I'll be hanging it from an Easyrig so backpack won't work for me. Hey GT, what about creating a v mount set up like the monitor mount? It can be used as a counter weight to the back, too. How long is the d-tap cable anyway?

I quickly moved away from wanting a larger battery on the Helix. The juiceboxes work great and are a fraction the weight of an AB or IDX brick. I do have a P-tap cable to run from a brick's power tap when I need it to be extra light or am on an R/C setup, but I'd never willingly go back to having a brick strapped to the gimbal.

For a while I was using a 3D printed v-mount adapter (with a cheap $15 amazon V-mount plate) to mount a v-mount right where the JuiceBox goes. It worked great for my front-heavy FS7, but I wasn't a fan of all the added weight (I don't have an easy-rig). Now, I run a d-tap cable from the battery inside my FS7 or I run a long d-tap from my v-mount belt pack.

Picked up a 2nd hand unit recently (Jason Ano's). I like it, definitely a specialty tool and don't feel like it replaces the vest/arm combo needed for longer shots.

Yes, the motors were changed a while back. The ones in the picture are the "new" style. They look very similar to the Jr. motors, but if you check the thickness (not diameter), you'll notice they're a little thicker than those on the Junior.

11 month a go i did my first test shot and now 11 month later i'am still very happy with my Letus and there Costumer service!! Look here at the test.

Arthur - you noted the horizon started shifting a bit (although it looks like this happened pretty early on in your test video). I've noticed this as well with my footage. Has Letus released a firmware update to address this, or did you find a workaround?
It's definitely a firmware issue. It's the new v2 motor with the latest firmware, confirmed by the previous owner. I found out you can manually override the roll in the gui. My Helix actually had some weird bugs so I had to send it in. will report back on that later.

I've had some issues with my Helix in the past but the more I use gimbals the more I realize I don't think it has to do with the Helix specifically but just the nature of gimbals in general, haha. There have been times where I've had issues with my Helix and had to use a Ronin for the shoot... and then I was just on a shoot where our B-cam's Ronin would not work correctly and my Helix was up and running in minutes. Letus has also been really great about support, too, Skyping with me to resolve any issues. Any time I've had to send it in, I've gotten it back in a couple days max. There is definitely a bit more of a learning curve on the Helix and they've gotten better with the iOS app (still has a bit to go... having a decent auto-tune to give you a starting point would be incredible).

One feature that doesn't seem to get enough praise is the fact that you can SET THE THING DOWN ANYWHERE. No stands! Also, the Pelican case for it so TINY compared to a Ronin case. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ronin case is 3x the volume.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for info on updating the GUI, downloading the iOS app, and general FAQ? The Helix site just redirects to a bunch of places and things kind of seem like a mess on there.

Hi Brandon,

LetusDirect.com and letushelix.com are no longer active websites. Everything can be found at letus.net

There's a Support tab with downloads, help articles, etc. We're still updating it, but it's pretty close to complete now.

Not to "pile on," Ken, but - I sort of gave up on the Helix site awhile ago when the "SEAL" site went dark and everything seemed to be a dead end. Would love to see lively discussions start to take place again there!
