  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

Is there an emerging consensus about which is more versatile, easier to use between Helix on 4th axis and traditional steadicam vest and arm versus L'aigle exoskeleton? I'm thinking the exo is probably more "natural" in some ways, maybe even more comfortable. But the steadicam vest & arm would seem to allow you in narrower spaces. Plus I'm guessing you could dismount from the 4th axis and do a handoff on the steadi whereas you couldn't with the exo.

Hi Sabyaschi, you can skype us at Letus.cs sometime and we can help you figure out your configuration.

This one has worked pretty well for me. I've found vibrations to come from the balance being off, too little motor power or having Pan & Roll PIDs that are too far off. This is a pretty slow response, smooth setting. I've used it for handheld and for car-car work on a dirt off road trail with very good results.

Looking forward to seeing what others' profiles are looking like.

Brendan, when using other profiles, make sure you check the pole count on your setting. Yours comes with the 22 poles while the older Helix had 42 poles.

Has anyone balanced a C300 with the top LCD on the full Helix? I just can't do it. :(
Hi Sabyasachi. I've tried and gave up as it was very top heavy and the cables also were in the way. I removed the top LCD and used a 5' LCD at the back which worked fine. Maybe the guys at Helix have succeeded and can help.

I removed the LCD as well and used another LCD at the back. Signal through the SDI port.

Here's one of my red settings that works very well for all around work, from car platform to fast action.

Thanks you Hal! I will try this profile tonight. With the basic profile I have vibrations, and it´s currently unusable.

So, with your profile I have always some vibrations but it's far better than before, thanks you Hal! I hope i'm on the right way

I've got a quick question about the 4th axis, if anybody on here has experience with it. I'm looking to mount it to a steadicam arm, and looking at the pictures of the 4th axis, I'm wondering if the system leaves the tilt handle unlocked or locked. Meaning, if I don't have my hand on the helix using the 4th axis mode, does the tilt axis (handle) still stabalize along that horizon, or do I need to be holding the handle in order for it to stabalize along that axis? Looking to purchase the 4th axis for an upcoming shoot, but I have not seen a whole lot on the actual use of it.

Good question.

This is the config Ive been sitting on the fence on for almost a year.

I didnt see anyone rigs set-up at NAB and have not seen enough footage of POV and actual shots.

There are some but not enough to get me off my fence so to speak ;)

If I understand your question...

The tilt capability, via the right handle, still functions normally. Which is exactly what you want. You still may need to tilt up or down with the camera and this could not be accomplished any other way. For me, the norm operation in this set-up is to keep my right hand on the tilt handle and guide the arm using the left hand either gently on the arm or on the left Helix handle. This gives you complete range of motion; pan, tilt, boom up/down, swing back and forth.

When you get the fourth axis, make sure you get a bearing that snugly fits your pin; Letus offers a few options.

Hope that helps.

Hal,
I'd love to try out your settings but after downloading them I can't seem to get them to open on my mac. Any chance just shooting an iPhone picture and posting that?
