  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

WOW that's amazing!!

So I assume one would not be able to do a roll or dutch move with the joystick or remote during operation similar to a pan or tilt? Basically going from normal perspective to dutch angle?

If I understand you correctly, then yes you can. You can use the joystick to set any angle and then you let go of the joystick, then it would lock the roll at that place and stabilize it.

I am a lot more of an engineer than a shooter, so please explain. By a dutch move, please explain.

Watch the first :37 seconds of this video for the kind of "dutch tilt" operation I mean with the Helix's 360 axis...just imagine standing still or walking with the Helix is it possible to use the joystick or remote to roll the axis like the video? Would the camera still be stabilized? If not is there any conceivable way to do this? Lol

I don't see why not. Also, the joystick will have the momentary switch to change profile. To switch between follow and lock for example

Is there a group buy post somewhere that I missed or the discussion of additional info after an NDA is signed? I don't check the forum all the time. I already have two pre orders in directly through Letus. I have 20 plus years as a Steadicam op with credits including, "12 Years A Slave", "The Butler", Spike Lee's "OldBoy", "This Is The End", "Looper", and many more and am also an AR (Now Omega AR. See Photo) pioneer/owner.

I couldn't find it but has anyone talked about safety screws on the dovetail portion of the single axis or some other safety mechanism to keep it from sliding out of a steadicam top stage when tilted up or down. Good thing to have just in case... (See Photos).
As for the rest of it, Horizon stabilization is king. Everything else is gravy. Digital encoders are what gives most modern wireless lens controls their accuracy. Lens motors have optical encoders that let the system know exactly where the motor is on the lens barrel and gives focus pullers confidence that 10 feet is really 10 feet. Without optical encoders, the lens would drift a bit and be a tad off its mark much like most 3 axis gimbals out there. I haven't seen one yet that could claim truly rock solid Level Horizons with no drift. I'm hopeful that this will be addressed in some of the new generation of stabilizers like the Helix and some others. My 2 cents. I also want to be able to run geared wheels to control the Helix through the trainer port on the 2nd Operator control like what is being done with the Movi.

Grayson - you might want to take some time to look back through the thread. There's a lot of good information to be found.

OMG wow that is simply amazing to hear! This hand held gimbal truly is a one of a kind!

Before i ever posted, I took the time to look through every post starting from the first that was in this thread. I didn't see any concrete answer to the things I just brought up but it was a lot of posts to go through which is why I asked if I missed something. If I did, please tell me where in the thread real answers were posted about the items I brought up: Group Buy, NDA on private discussion, safety screws or mechanism for the single axis on a rig and horizon drift due to the nature of brushless motors and correction scenarios for it. Thanks.

From a very basic standpoint, it seems to me that you are envisioning a somewhat different system than the Helix is. Did you go to LetusHelix.com? While the 1 and 2 axis systems will work very well on top of a steadicam sled, tripod or jib, the 3 and 4 axis systems would seem to be less suited for that and meant more for handheld operation (but it will be fun to experiment). There is also a lot of discussion and excitement about the 4th axis bracket which will allow use on a vest/arm system without the sled.

I cannot speak for Letus but I personally plan to attach the 1 or 2 axis Helix to the sliding plate on the top of the sled which, at least in the case of my unit, has its own safety device to avoid sliding off. I am not familiar with the specific set-up of the Steadicam so perhaps that observation doesn't apply.

The issue of optical stabilizers was also addressed in the thread. The Helix does not use optical stabilizers as it is built on the Alexmos system which, apparently, does not employ them in its standard configuration. The Helix does, however, utilize a second IMU for additional accuracy in stabilization. As stated on the Letus Helix web site:

  • Second IMU that increases the short-term precision of the stabilization 10x-30x times.
I admit, your discussion of lens stabilization confused me as, to my knowledge, none of the gimbal stabilizers exert any control over the lens.

Otherwise, the group buy information all there. The RU group buy is no longer available as it has sold out. You said you had separate orders in directly with Letus so I assume you have some contact with them directly. Of course, the deposit we all made is refundable per the terms posted when we signed up.

Hope that helps.

Can anybody post a link with it in action. I have only seen one video with it where they were in a dark club. If i understand it right it is shipping soon so it must be more videos.
