  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

I need some help.

As part of the preparation for the flood of customer service to come, I am sending Alex of Basecam a full final Helix. The problem is that we always have bad experience shipping anything to Russia, via FedEx or UPS or DHL. USPS does work, but too risky, especially for this kit. Anyone is heading that way that is willing to hand carry it to Alex?

Use EMS. It's the best for this. In the US it goes through the USPS: https://www.usps.com/ship/priority-mail-express-international.htm

i hate to ask, because y'all have been so awesome throughout this development process - awesome enough for me to jump from the Ronin to the Helix, if that says anything....

But before this runs to Russia, would we be able to see a few snaps of the "full finished Helix" - that'd be a treat....

I am hoping there isn't just one. :scared:

Alex will get it the same day you all will get. It's not done yet, otherwise I would tease with some pictures. Alex did release some firmware couple of days ago and it's a lot better than the original 32-bit.

Thanks Meryem. I hope will not let you disappointed.

Sorry to keep asking...but do you have the specs for what is included in the group buy yet? We really want to see new video examples as well. Thanks

Does the Helix use the two IMU configuration or is it just a single IMU?

Ohh oh...... just read the comments on the Letus Facebook page and now I'm thinking I have pre-ordered the wrong version of the Helix if I want to use my Sony F5. It's sounds like the F5/F55 won't work on the Helix that is about to ship. How far away is the second-generation larger Helix that is mentioned? I'm thinking I should bail until this newer larger unit becomes available.

Facebook May 23: "hang tight if you want to use the F55. We are working on the next Helix version which works for camera such as F55 and Alexa. There's nothing to say that the F55 can't be set up on the current Helix, especially if you don't use the on-bard recorder and the battery in the back. It's not the weight that is the issue (and I think you can mount it on the current Helix) but the longer the set up you have, the harder time you will experience with stabilizing the set up. All we are saying is that it is not the ideal set up and we recommend the bigger version if you have a longer set up."

A post follows that they will give an F5 a test next week (this week?) but I am a little concerned.

Peter - I think I recall a discussion in this thread about the F5. (I know, a real pain to go back through it all.) If I am remembering correctly, there was a question about whether the length of the camera would fit and balance on the Helix and, again just my vague recollection, I believe it was determined that it probably could. In any case, if you have the camera and can measure where it's fore-aft center of gravity lies, the info may be there to give you a better indication.

Good luck.

Peter - I went back and found the area where the F5 was discussed and you were in the thick of it. LOL It would seem that the F5 will work if you go back to about this page (post #512) and follow the discussion up through post # 545 or so:

Thanks Terry yes I was in the thick of it! Since then I figured that because the only way the F5 can fit (as discussed in that thread) is to remove the V-mount adaptor, it means that the two Hirose ports are also removed which takes away the remote on/off capability and removes a power port to run my on-board TVLogic 056 and radio mic.

I'm also worried that because the back of the camera body is also then fully exposed with the fragile multiport connector exposed to the elements. I know it can be taped over but it's not ideal.

Depending on what the Letus guys come back with this week with testing the F5, I'm think I might wait until the new larger Helix comes out that will work with the normally-configured F-series and Alexa. Not being able to use my R5 Raw recorder is also an issue.

Will the Letux Helix work with the Blackmagic Ursa? This camera is about 16 pounds and 12" long if I remember correctly. Too big?

@scott I don't know if you ever 'held' a Ursa, but a few weeks ago I had the chance, this is not a camera you want on a gimbal. Not even run an gun style. On a tripod or on your shoulder no problem.
(And I am not a woosh... :) )

I spent some time working on the balance of my steadicam yesterday. Made me realize how excited I am to get the Helix. I am looking forward to comparing the one-axis configuration (on the sled) vs. the 4th-axis rig directly on the arm. This is going to be fun!

It's almost June!
