  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Joe, if you don't like CAs I think you should avoid vintage lenses...or stop down to at least 2.8/4.

In very high contrast situations most lenses will show CAs tho, except maybe Master Primes and OTUS (partially Sigma ARTs too).

BUT then they're too clean for some projects...horses for courses....

not so with the majority of the Soviet ones:-) I only exibit some lateral color on the wides.

Purple fringe is the result of a calculation aimed for the maximum mtf and sharpness, for a lens being achromatic (two colors out of three corrected) anastigmat.

Here's some 4th of July eye-candy. These frames were captured on Epic-W and an early-80s 50mm Summilux while taking long-exposures and adjusting focus.

I specifically chose a vintage 50 Lux BECAUSE it renders lower contrast and less saturated colors.

Pretty insane result Mark! THere's almost a scientific thing to it...

What about the summilux, do they suffer the same CA as the summicrons?

I know what you mean Lewis. The combination of the 8k sensor and Summilux provides so much detail they look like something else entirely. In previous years I used an SLR and 'modern' glass to capture the same effect but the results were lacking by comparison.

And I really enjoyed your MV... found it strange, unique and interesting!

It seems often generalizations are made about Leica Rs as though they all have the same characteristics. Because they were produced over a 40+ year period, there are distinctions based on the time-period and optical designs. In my experience the late designs are much less prone to show CA. Also it can depend a lot on the camera too. For instance CA crops up significantly less on Weapon than it did on Epic Dragon (not sure about BMD cameras though). And in general I'd say even vintage Leica Rs CA less than most vintage glass and if you plan your shots accordingly its not too hard to avoid, assuming you don't want to see any. And in most cases, its a relatively easy correction in post.

To your question, I think the 35 Summilux CAs less than the 35 Summicron, same goes for the 50 Summilux E60 vs 50 Summicron, whereas the 80 Summilux is probably not much different than the 90 Summicron in that regard. Also a late German 50 Summicron from the '90s is likely cleaner than the earlier Canadian version.

Question for you Leica experts!

I haven't seen much said, or images posted from the 15mm 3.5.
How is that lens?, .. anyone have images to post from it?

How does the 15mm compare to the 19mm??

Thanks,

Curtis

The 15 3.5 is very very nice, it's a Zeiss 15 3.5 with Leica Coatings.

When I had both I preferred the 15 3.5 but then I don't like sharp corners WO so...

15 2.8 was made by Schneider, it's sharper and with a more modern rendition.

15 3.5 has more microcontrast tho and closed down it can be VERY sharp too.

Hope it helps!

Do you guys use a soften filter on top the leica R lenses? I am always shooting mostly wide open. And with other lenses I always use a soften filter. But I have not tested the leica r's enough to see if they work nicely togheter.

Thanks!

Hi guys,

Here are some pictures taken at the SUMMICRON 35mm and SUMMILUX 50mm on my Scarlet-W :)

You have with these lenses the same chromatic aberrations as me? I want to talk about the mauve reflections in the plane's headlights ...
Thanks

Yup. If you were wide open on the 50mm you will get that kind of CA. Very similar to what you'd get on a Zeus super speed wide open. Best off stepped down a little bit to 1.8 or 2 and you a bit of post gain to avoid the CA.

Leica vs Nikon anyone?? I would like to see it compared on a RED camera or is Nikon dead?

Like a scientific test or just a generic shootout comparison? If I get some free time I might be able to do something like that, would have to be with newer Nikons (I don't have anymore vintage ones) vs my GL Optics Rs.
I did a quick fashion/dance film on my Weapon with a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 VR (wide shots) and my Leica r 80-200 f/4 (telephoto shots): https://vimeo.com/228898869

I'm sorry...what did you say her number was???? I had to take a cold shower at work =) needed to know what the look would be because I have some vintage Nikon glass that's in great shape. I need to get out and shoot but I've been tied up with a project.

I have a set of Nikon AiS lenses and I love their look. I have shot a handfull of low budget features with them. The only real issue I have with them is image shift when you change focus direction. If you set up your shots to only need to pull in one direction, there are no significant problems. Like a lot of lenses, you can get CA. Most of the time, it isn't too bad. But, it can show up in some shots and call attention to itself. I don't have a side by side comparison, but here is a trailer for a short film I shot a few years ago with the Nikkors and Epic MX.
