  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Great Work Man!!
Love the skin colors!!

A few frames from a recent project. Red Epic Weapon 8k and Leica-r Summicron set.

I must admit i become more and more fond of my Leica-r kit. Thanks to all that has kept this thread alive, because this was my source of information and inspiration for buying into Leica-R glass for cinematography.

Nice work Jørgen! These are beautiful. I know what you mean. My Leicas are my go to lenses for just about everything.

Me too!

The more I see them against other lenses I really realize how much they are a cut above.

Yes, just lovely Jørgen with perfect skin tones.

And I couldn't agree more ...the more I work with these, the more I think twice before using just about anything else :)

Hey all, sorry to interject with a tech question but this seems like the best place with all you experts. My 24mm Elmarit won't hit infinity on my Scarlet W, even after removing all of shim material inside the Leitex mount. Is there an easy way to adjust the optics from home, or is my only option to send to Steve's for adjustment? Is this an issue of spacing of elements inside the lens?

Hi Luke! i myself have serviced several 24mm Elmarits, this lens is a bit different from all the others in construction. I think i know it pretty well.
If you have used it a lot with remote focus with self calibration, sometimes the CRC(close range correction) system could un-screw itself inside the lens.
In this lens CRC commands the movement of one of lens elements, so the lens could potentially become out of sync and loose infinity. I think i had one of my lenses do exactly the same and fixed that. By the way your Leitax mount was shimmed previously by someone, right ? Is the lens in original condition, was it opened before ?

I would recommend getting it serviced, if you need help with that - feel free to PM me.

How much you guys see the Leica M's and R's differ in terms of IQ and "Leica look"?

It depends which ones you're comparing but from what I've seen Rs/Ms produced around the same time render fairly consistently (some are the same optical design). Because the Rs were discontinued about 10 years ago, the latest Ms like the 50 Summicron APO Asph render crisper than a 50mm R Summicron. But when comparing older Ms/Rs produced during the same period the Rs should show a slight resolution advantage due to the larger glass surfaces.

thx Mark, sounds great! I tend to check Kenrockwell (though haven't done so in a long time) guess he probably has a tip or two

Do you guys like the sigma art lenses? I own them at this point, but might want to get into the leica R lenses.

The leicas are smaller, less weight, nice bokeh, warm color, organic image.
The sigma are bigger, more weight, cooler color, sharper then the leicas. They are a stop faster then the summicrons though.

My only worry is that I might want to shoot faster then a F2. And might want to move up to the summilux, but I dont have the money right now to do so. Thoughts?

would you say the sigma's are very organic tool in terms of image? If a Lica r is a 10/10 on a scale for "organic image", what would the sigma be? And same for bokeh, could you say something bout that? Thx!

The Sigmas are faster (2 stops at the wide end), much sharper (even wide open vs Leica closed down a stop or two; the corners on FF are on a different league compared to Leica) and have way, way more contrast than the Leica R's.
The 70-80's Leica R's have a blueish overall cast while the Sigmas have a green cast wide open that goes away after stopping down to F2-2.8. Leica is more muted while Sigma have more saturated colors (probably due to the increased contrast as well).
Bokeh's cleaner on the Sigma lenses, C.A is quite nicely controlled on both sets (though the v1 19mm Leica suffers from bad fringing near the corners). The highlight rendering is harsher on the Sigma lenses, with most of the Leicas veiling nicely.

The only bad things about the Sigma lenses are the weight, the short focus throw (90 degrees or so) and maybe the magenta/green C.A that shows up from time to time.
Other than that, we are lucky to have so many amazing, relatively affordable and different options nowadays.

Well I did not do any massive tests yet. But I feel like for sharp camera's like the RED, Ursa mini pro, GH5 The leica-R's might be a better fit. And for softer camera's like the 5D III, I would want the most sharp lenses I can get as the image is already quite soft. But that can be a personal opinion. Vladimir has more intel/experience/knowledge on this then me. (one thing I noticed right away was indeed the highlight rendering and bokeh that is nicer on the leica's.)
