  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

There's a big difference in bokeh style and performance wide open. Here's a quick comparison I posted a while ago with examples:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66090-Leica-R-Cine-Conversion-aprox-8000-high-quality-7-lens-prime-set-in-Canon-EF&p=1330516&viewfull=1#post1330516

Perfect! It's nice to finally see some side by side images. The 50mm E55 version kind of reminds of the swirly bokeh effect that you get from the Helios lenses. Both lenses render beautifully to my eyes.

I recently came back from Shanghai and decided to get my first Leica R lens (the 35mm f/1.4 Summilux). It was in excellent condition and snagged it for $2700 which I found to be much cheaper than anything I found on eBay and most other places.

Since I already have the 35mm Summilux, I'll probably build my set to be Summiluxes instead of Crons. In which case, for now I'll get the E55 version of the 50mm instead of the E60. I'll probably upgrade to the E60 way down the line.

Paul, the 28 v2 shouldn't show much distortion at all. Its great for architecture, etc. where you want straight lines. I'd reserve judgement until testing it on Epic, where it should shine.

Hopefully today or over the weekend.

It's not so much distortion but how flat is the field supposed to be. So take a shot of a surface parallel to the camera (aka a large brick wall) and the edge softness on the left and right is quite pronounced. Because what's in focus is curved from the camera view.

I noticed this because my test image for all lenses is a scene with trees, sky and depth in the trees. It's a hard test because bokeh in the trees at the various depths can create really harsh images and i noticed with this it was the the centre of the frame was in perfect focus, then it was out and then back in focus at the edge.

I have 4 types of 28 to side by side here.

What i'm looking for is Leica M performance in a R style lens. This 28 is supposed to be that. However so far i've noticed that M style lenses consistently perform better and i wonder if that's partly how close the rear is to the sensor. So this will test for that.

thanks
Paul

Does the leica R 15mm f2.8 asph ROM cover the Dragon 6k sensor? I need something beneath 19mm, so I'm considering the Leica 15 or the Tokian 11-16. But, the Tokina doesn't cover the 6k sensor either. What other alternatives would you suggest? I'd prefer a zoom in the range of 11-16, but a prime lens around 15mm would work as well.

The modern Zeiss ZE/ZF 15mm f/2.8 is supposed to be quite fantastic (it's also on sale right now at B&H - $1000 off the normal price). Not sure how well it would match, but maybe using a promist or hbm filter would do the trick.

Thanks. Do you know if the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 covers the dragon sensor at 6k?

It is a full frame lens with a 24x36 image circle so, yes. As with the Leica R. Both will also cover Weapon Dragon 8K vista vision. and More easily cover 8K Helium.

Hello,

I just did my first project with the summicron-R's. (35,50 and 90mm)

They are doing a pretty good job. (only wished they were a bit more macro, the close focus distance could be a tad closer for me, maybe Ill need to buy the 60mm macro aswell)

Hey the blooming itself is a black-promist 1/4. But I also added light leaks to enhance the effect.

Okay, so why can't i find a late 35mm f2 summicron? Something over 349xxx when there was a final code change? Is there something going on with them globally? A secret stash somewhere?

Does anyone here have a f2 35mm, later than that?

I know the summilux is consider a little funky, but is the summicron a suitable partner with the 50 and 90?

cheers!
Paul

According to a Leica Forum there were just around 1000 made after 1990 / SNr from 35....

https://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/35mm_f/2_Summicron-R_II

I had one for sale recently here on Reduser and sometimes i see one for sale at least here in Germany.

Have an earlier Summilux now and it has a bit lower contrast and more interesting bokeh in my opinion.

Here is a comparison:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...h-quality-7-lens-prime-set-in-Canon-EF/page37

I saw the wiki articles, although when was it discontinued? Because there's a gap between 1999 and 2009 which could have any number. But it does seem that 1000 is about right bearing in mind i see none around in general.

Great comparison. Seems that bokeh in the lux is softer at the same aperture than the crons.

What was the difference between the A and the B luxes? There is a huge difference in price between old and new serials, with the mind that the later ones are better but i do wonder if this really is always the case - what kind of evidence of this is there. (I can understand when a model has an optical change but there are small model code tweaks all the time)

I'm trying to work out whether to swap from contax to leica for better quality. Hopefully this weekend i'll be able to side by side a number and see for myself whether i prefer or not. But then even within Leica the difference between a 50 cron (386xxx) and a 50 lux (E60 version) is 4 or 5 times. But realistically is it that much better (well no, but i find aberrations on the cron wide open and wonder whether the lux stopped down to f2 would show the same...)

Then the 90 cron, the APO version is that much more again. But it's super tough to know whether it's worth it.

1st world problems, eh?

thanks
Paul

Nice stuff Joe,

Any other filtration and in-camera effects used here?

David,

Where was the last image, in the first post of this thread, shot at? That library space looks so cool!

It certainly looks amazing! Should I ever find myself back in Florence I'll def have to check it out. Cheers!

Not besides the black promist 1/4, the rest was done in post. (It was shot with a ursa mini pro btw). I was a bit afraid to shoot wide open af F2. But next time I think I can shoot wide open at F2. Do you guys shoot at F2? or minimum F4 for max sharpness?
