LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Tony,

Great looking spot. Really nice Leica look. Would never think it is "vintage glass" just "gorgeous glass".

Testing out the 50mm summicron on my scarlet-w today. Straight from camera, dragon color2, red gamma 3. All wide open.

Hi guys,

I'm over in India on a Bollywood feature at the moment, and my producer here has a set of Duclos-modified Leicas he's looking to sell:

1) LEICA 19MM SERIES II F2.8 Serial no 35***** (Built in ND filter) 10 holes

2) LEICA 24 MM F2.8 (6 holes)

3) LEICA 28MM F2.8 (6 holes)

4) LEICA 35MM F1.4 ROM (6 holes and has an electronic chip)

5) LEICA 50MM F1.4 (6 holes)

6) LEICA 100MM APO Macro F2.8 (10 holes)

7) LEICA 70-180 F2.8 (10 holes with an electronic chip)

They've all got Leitax EF mounts. Is anyone interested in a cinevised set?

Cheers,

Mark

Very nice captures Brandon. I especially like the bokeh style in the last one – almost looks underwater.

Here are a couple frames from a recent time-lapse on LR 180 2.8 apo at 6k on my Epic M Dragon

Thanks Mark. I was using my fingers around the lens to manipulate the bokeh and create darker/softer areas in the frame. Ended up with a few cool effects from it. Great cloud captures as well.

Using the Leica 70-180mm 2.8 for testing this weekend. Funny, it is doing better on CA than an Otus 55mm. Might have the Otus factory checked or be just that more impressed with the Leica :-)

Nice Zeb! Please post some frames from the 70-180mm. Been waiting to play with one of those for a while.

Those are some beautiful images Brian. Love the colours and the warm grade in the sunny shots.

Has anybody compared the Canon FD 24/1.4 vs Leica-R 28/2.8?

Is it a good idea to combine Leica-R and Canon FD lenses to make a high speed lens set?

I have GL Optics help me converted a set of Leica-R 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 80/1.4. I also have a Canon FD 135/2.0 rehoused because it is one-stop brighter than the Leica-R 135/2.8 (not sure if that was the right decision).

For wide angles, I thought my Sigma 18-35/1.8 cine-rehouse would be sufficient. Technically, it works very well and is quite sharp. But it feels too modern and too clean. It lacks the richness of the Leica.

So now I'm looking to get some vintage wide angle lenses rehoused. The obvious choice is to get the Leica-R 28/2.8 and 19/2.8. But f/2.8 is too slow for many situations (low-light, the shallow DOF look). So how about getting a Canon FD 24/1.4L instead of the Leica 28?

The Canon FD 24/1.4 seems to be highly praised. It is also similar to my Leica lenses in age. But do they match well in terms of contrast, sharpness, and the "Leica 3D look"?

What would you do if you were in my position?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Jack

Hey Jack,

I have recently built a set of P+S Technik Canon 14mm, Leica R 19mm, Canon 24mm, Leica R Summilux 35mm, 50 & 80 and a Canon 100mm.
I tested them extensively before they were rebuilt and found them to match close enough for my work. My Leicas seem a tad warmer, but I can live with that and I like to have a fast 24mm. The 24mm definitely has a bit of CA when fully wide open, but that I don't mind either.
Now I just need a 28mm and 40mm OM f2. Would love a 65mm in there as well, but I've found nothing so far.
The P+S rehousing seems very solid and my set is the first one they've done and I'm about to start a film in two weeks so will know soon how they hold up in real life. Very exciting.

Go for it.
All the best
Marcel

Hi Marcel,

Good to hear from someone who has done exactly the same thing I am trying to do.
Looks like we will end up having exactly the same set of lenses.

Have you compared the Canon FD 24/1.4 vs the Leica 28/2.8 directly? How do they compare when both are set at f/2.8?
People has been talking about the special Leica look, the intangible "character" if you believe in such thing. I have seen modern Canon lenses that is obviously lacking in character. How do you like the Canon FD 24 in this sense?

Cheers,

Jack

I did some quick comparisons between the v1 28mm and also the 28mm FD f2. Between the two 28mm lenses the Leica R was sharper wide open. I went for speed with the 24mm. I really like the Canon FD's. Some say they are similar to the K35's. When I physically look at the K35 24mm in a friends rental house and my 24mm the build of the glass looks very similar apart from more aperture blades and a slightly warmer coating on the K35. I love the 14mm Canon FD (which has been rehoused for years by Optex and other companies). But I also like the Leica R's. So I combined them.
There is no right or wrong in my mind. Do what you want. People have made great films with all types of lenses and in the end it's what you like best (or can afford) and what is best suited for you to tell the stories you want.

Ok - this is not the 28mm, but anyways:
Here is an old, really unscientific, comparison I did between Canon FD 24mm f1.4 and Leica R 24mm f2.8 - both at f2.8. The FD is quite a bit softer at f1.4 tho...
I´d say they could be quite easily matched...
