LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Great to see this thread Rollin'

just so you all know, your Leica R glass will cover Weapon Dragon at 8k. I'm so glad I have my set!

David

Excellent David, was hoping that's the case – thanks for the great news!!!

Indeed.

I just added the 35-70 f4 to my set making total of 12 lenses. Only the 15, 16 and 80 to go!

In another line, has anyone tried putting a Bright Tangerine Misfit matte box on cinemod?

I'm a little nervous at the idea, but it's very light.

Yeah, you're right. It was wishful thinking.

I have. I really like that mattebox for the lenses, it's strong enough to clamp onto the 80mm lens fronts. I did have an issue with my 90mm front though, it seemed that the threads of the 80mm front adapter got loose off the lens, and almost had a dropped matte box situation, but I think for normal use it's passable.

When I used a 15mm studio spaced setup with it, I did have issues with the mattebox and follow focus, so you'll need a low profile mattebox, otherwise there will be a gap.

On the Weapon 8K lens coverage. Pretty much all stills full frame glass image circle will cover the 8K sensor. It will feel a lot like full frame on you DSLR. Vista Vision is essentially FF 35mm. 43mm image circle.

Phil's chart pretty much nails it.

I imaging that at 8K FF, or a 46.3mm image circle, that even some DSLR stills lenses might vignette at bit, particularly the wide lenses. One foolproof solution is to use TS lenses, like the Canon 17mm TS which has a much wider image circle than a typical wide lens.

Exactly.

One thing to consider is full frame 36mm wide. 8K Dragon is considerably wider, almost 41mm (Ultrapanavision is 48.56mm). So vignetting could well be a concern, especially at 8K WS.

TS and Medium format glass are most likely the best way to ensure a vignette free exposure (by shooting through the "heart" of the glass).

Glad to hear it Nathan – looks great!

Amazing as always Dominik. I like the subtle greenish tint in the shadows of the first pictures. I that enhanced in post or basically straight out of the Dragon?

Anyone here use Leica R zooms? We love our Leica R prime set, but would like to find a zoom to go with it. Something in like a 28-70.

Yes, the 35-70 f4 macro seems to be the best (under $10k option:) in the mid-range and is parfocal. It renders a bit cleaner / more modern than most the LR primes but is sharp and cuts well with later samples.

Nice, good to know. Seems to be going for a fairly decent price online too. Might have to pick one up.
