What about the 21-35 f/3.5-4. Have used that lens with both the 35-70 f/4 & 80-200mm f/4 and the 35-70 f/2.8 & 70-180mm f/2.8. Apart from the speed I have no complaints and nor have directors I have worked with. Nice to have the extra flexibility with doc work and matches well with the lenses you mention.
Shawn, might also want to consider the 19mm v2 for a great much-wider-than-35mm option.
Thanks for the suggestion Mark... How is the 19mm with distortion? I was thinking of that as well but was worried that it would distort to much to "match" look wise (not color wise) with standard and tele lenses?
Hey Shawn, there is some outer edge distortion with the 19mm but its pretty easy to correct in post and depending on the shot it may not really be noticeable. Also CA and vignetting are pretty well under control, plus good edge sharpness even wide open.
Hey Leica Lens Geeks,
I just did a chart test comparing the Summicron-C lenses with my Leica R set and they were a nearly identical match.
I then did a big job in which I swapped back and forth without hesitation and the footage is indistinguishable.
I've said it before, but getting into this set was the smartest thing I ever did.
Hey Tom, thanks for that suggestion, I was looking into that lens but was a little worried about the vari-aperature and also it is a bit pricey.... but you say you have used it (and the other zooms) for Cine work and you feel that they work really well for you?
Hi Shawn
Probably best if you test it for yourself, not sure how you are likely to use it. I tend to use it as a variable prime i.e.. not zooming while I am filming. If used like this there is little problem with the variable aperture particularly as I use the motion mount with it. Matching exposure is pretty simple.
I use it mainly with the 35-70 f2.8 and the 70-180 f2.8. It is slightly harder to use with these lenses as it is a slower aperture. I suspect you will have no problem with the f4s as at its slowest it matches these. There is only half a stop difference between its slowest and fastest stop.
Not certain if I used it in the following link but suspect that I did for the opening shots with the reveal on the kid as well as the wide where the crows fly. The whole film was shot on the Leica zooms mentioned above with a 2x converter used on one shot.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Tom and thanks for the sample... good stuff... and yeah I would only use these as "variable aperture" just looking for maximum focal length ability quickly w/ as little compromise on lens quality as possible... The concept of zooming while filming is just not my style![]()
Again thanks for sharing your thoughts and your sample. Much appreciated.
