  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Latest Scarlet Beta firmware = 5K FF 24fps!!! @ 9:1 Compression

Looks like a Magic Lantern inside job ;-)

Well it solidified it for me. I am not interested in Dragon Scarlet. I will happily upgrade to Epic from my Scarlet. Tired of wishing my camera did more.

That's a healthy attitude I think and probably a great choice for you. It's funny though, now that Scarlet Dragon's abilities are revealed it seems like a more viable option for me than I once thought.

If with a firmware update Red could position Scarlet so that it remains competitive, or better yet if the 2-year old Scarlet could kick the other guy's latest and greatest camera's ass they could claim major bragging rights. That is one possible reason why they might do such a thing... If they could.

In my heart and mind it still kicks since none of the new cameras and even the older BMCC ever made it into the norm/wild where Im from :)

Personally I still wish to buy a Red Scarlet, despite not doing 5K 24fps.
Honestly, with all these new 4K cameras being unveiled at NAB this year, not one as of yet as proven to be at the same level of a Scarlet.
It still has awesome features like an higher dynamic range than most, HDRX mode, 5K 12fps for stills, Redcode which is hands down the best Raw format right now, can be upgraded or swapped to a better model, camera form factor and weight (sorry but cameras bulkier and heavier than a red one? no thank you)
If anything, the competition is catching up with the Red One Mx, not the DSMC models.
Not trying to be a fanboy or anything, i'm pretty much gear agnostic, but I still don't understand this talk of Scarlets being outdated, not good enough or even downright dying.

All in all these last few days are just making me want a Scarlet more and more, which I will buy soon, just hoping for a price cut announced at Nab hahaha, fingers crossed.

We're looking into it.

The Scarlet memory configuration is not designed for higher sustained frame-rates at full resolution. The system may become unstable or you may run into corrupt footage.

does this mean "higher sustained frame rates" as in higher than 24? or higher than 12 at 5k. This could be an amazing thing if it could pull off 5k 24 and a little more in the 4k zone. Not saying it should, just would be cool. Would def start considering keeping it as is and being a scarlet dragon as well. Be cool to have 2 cams on a shoot both 5k

I would like 4.5k, seems totally realistic, on par with red one, larger fov, better 4k. I wanted the dragon scarlet upgrade, but paying 9500$ to get a 14500$ camera ..... maybe i prefer to pay 9500$ and get a 17500$ epic. Plus, when i put my name in the waiting list last year I was expecting dragon quality to be incredible. Now that I see footages, comparisons, new dragon colorscience, i'm wondering if it's worth it. I see almost no difference, or when I see it it's when everything is pushed into non realistic shooting conditions. In regular condition, I don't see any difference that can be noticed by a regular audience.

New firmware build is available for download. it is still 5.2.9 but different in file size. Something changed in there.

It's amazing that this happened to the OP. Without this little accident we would still hear that it's impossible to do 5K @24 on the Scarlet ...reminds me about what they were saying about GPU debayering. I guess it was possible and VERY efficient after all. Now we will hear excuses that it would not work because of this or that...

It's all about business - makes sense. Now let's get 5K 24p :)

Personally, every Dragon R3D I've downloaded has blown me away. The amount of flexibility in the grade is staggering. The low amount of noise unique. The extra dynamic range in highlights refreshing. And the better lowlight performance also. And most of all, the color is superb. For the color and texture alone, I'm sold.

That said, to your point, under very controlled circumstances (ie a studio shoot), these benefits may not be as noticeable, as none of these muscles are being as stretched.

Nonetheless, I ache to get a Dragon sensor in my hands.

the 40 (39, actually) fps does not seem at all like slo-mo... i have a feeling it's 12fps with messed up metadata

so before everyone starts tripping over one another with conspiracy theories, let's first verify that this is a legit happening.
then we can discuss burst modes.

It's for sure 5K/39, you can tell when he waves his hand in front of the camera that it's overcranked.

Red didn't help themselves by pulling the Beta and replacing it with another. I'm sure they'll have an explanation in due time. Hopefully it's not a 'nothing to see here, move along' brush off.

I suspect that scarlets are capable of 24p, but likely some will not perform the same as others, or could possibly overheat, and therefore Red limits it to what it can consistently do on all camera. Likely the 24p got enabled on a build for scarlet dragon, and was not disabled again.

That's why it's a Beta build, not a release build. It's supposed to be a sandbox, not an edict. Let folks at least have the opportunity to fail at their own risk. The camera's not going to melt in your hands or explode like another camera that will go unmentioned.

I can see Canon holding back something like this, but not RED.

I hope it all shakes out to get 5k 24fps. And a bit higher on 4k. At least red said they are looking into it... Whatever that may mean. I really think if 39fps was working that 24p should be quite reliable.
