  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Latest Scarlet Beta firmware = 5K FF 24fps!!! @ 9:1 Compression

Cant download the Beta from red.com.

Great, RED must already be hard at work fixing it. I definitely won't be posting the firmware file here as I don't want to get banned from RU for posting what is now contraband firmware. Again, I think the "issue" happened as a result of the shutting down mid-update, not because of the firmware itself. Still haven't been able to get it to do 5K past 12fps again.

The beta is 5.2.9 I downloaded mine yesterday it was 5.2.9 then, too.
Shows up exactly the same.

It seems as if the firmware has been taken down.

I have 5.2.9 installed too. No 5k...

Hope there aren't any serious problems with that version.

Here are the files. Once again, sorry for underexposed, non-black-shaded whip pan footage + and excited Scarlet owner shaking his hand at the lens like a hype man on stage, haha. These are the clips I shot last night when it was doing its thing. 5K 24p and above is no longer working so this may be all we get.

Very weird. On the website it show 5.2.8 and the doesn't work.

It shows 5.1.38. The beta firmware is totally gone now.

So, who is going to try cutting the power during a firmware-upgrade? LOL
Now this sounds even more weird than before, a bit like a prank or bad joke.

Downloading the file... ;)

well as much as I would like to see 5k at 24fps on my scarlet, I don't hold much hope of it ever happing, but if this turns out to be true in some way shape or form then let the conspiracy theories fly;-)... Might have to make a shirt "Scarlet-X 5k24p or We Riot":beatdeadhorse5: just kidding of course. Hopefully they get what ever bugs worked out and have a new firmware up to download shortly for everyone.

And with that, I leave for NAB.

Obviously if it wasn't possible RED wouldn't have pulled the beta firmware.
And again, as clarification, it didn't actually lose power. I force shut it down by holding the power button. The upgrade took way longer than normal, so I thought my LCD wasn't receiving video feed. The green LEDs were both pulsating on the side of the camera. Figured some kind of message was on screen waiting for me but I couldn't see it, so I turned it off. The only other detail I can provide is that prior to this weird stuff happening, I was at 4K 23.98 but the framerate was in yellow and the camera was in Varispeed, despite the record framerate and project timebase matching. Then when I switched it to 5K the framerate stayed the same and I shot a quick clip. Turned cam off, turned back on, Motion Mount shutter speed bug is back so shutter angle was randomly set to 100 degrees or something, then I did another long clip to see if it could maintain those framerates. It worked, then I noticed I could do 40fps and gave that a try.

All the max framerates were strange numbers, definitely not clean multiples like you'd expect. The compression ratios associated with them were all over the place. My exact settings before switching into magical 5K mode were 4K FF 23.98, no lookaround, ISO 800, 180 degree shutter, and REDcode 8:1 which rolled around via the target redcode function.

I know this is sounding like some sort of bad Sasquatch sighting prank. Don't brick your cameras trying this, please. If RED wants to give 5K to us, they'll do it through safer, tested means. Will probably go Scarlet-Dragon anyway. With that on the table, no way RED wants 5K in this iteration of the Scarlet. I think we can give up on it but know that it was possible.

Holy shit! You weren't kidding! And they play back smooth too. Sure the compression is high, but this is legit! I hope perhaps this opens some doors for Scarlet Users. As a now Epic owner I would love to see Scarlet get some 5K capability. I'm not sure it would be possible on every camera, but this is still a bit of a revelation.

Wow... I'm starting to believe you Aria.
I had that moment, after the flash, with the two blinking green leds and no picture on the lcd too. Did not see that during previous updates. I was close to turn my camera off, but i waited a bit longer and everything did go normal.

GUYS, THIS IS NOT A HINT TO TURN YOUR CAMERA OFF WHEN THIS HAPPENS!

DON'T TRY IT! SERIOUSLY!!!

;)
