  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My Scarlet got force-shut-down during a firmware upgrade, and somehow the latest beta firmware enabled me to shoot 5K FF 24fps at 9:1 compression and 5K FF 40fps at 15:1 compression. For now, the cam starts up intermittently and does this. I'll probably upgrade the firmware eventually and will obviously lose this ability, but this thread will serve as documentation that it did happen.

It's DEFINITELY a bug. 2 out of the 3 R3Ds that I shot will not play back on the camera. Only the 5K 40fps one plays back in-camera, as far as I can tell. Lots of other risky instabilities throughout the system.

Lame R3Ds: [link removed to save space on my MediaFire account + 2nd set of R3Ds is better] Once again, sorry for grossly underexposed, non-black-shaded whip pan footage + and excited Scarlet owner shaking his hand at the lens like a hype man on stage, haha. Needed something to do for 39fps shot. These are the clips I shot the first night when it was doing its thing.

VERY FINAL DISCLAIMER:
Jarred has emphasized to me that these framerate/resolution combos are potentially dangerous territory for Scarlet hardware. Just because I have shot R3Ds with this camera, does not mean it was designed to do so or could have done so safely for extended periods of time. For those of you who may come across this thread and not have the patience to read everything in it including RED Team posts -- You should not consider my incident irrefutable "proof" that Scarlet is capable of reliably recording 5K at higher framreates. There's a lot of stuff happening under the hood in these cameras, and they do have a measurable limit as to what they can endure. This thread is primarily here for your amusement. While it has been lots of fun, I have now upgraded my camera to the latest beta build, which is supposed to prevent this bug from reoccurring.

I still am having a hard time believing this, and it's sitting right in front of me. It also does 5K up to 40fps at 15:1 compression, 4KWS to 54fps at 10:1, so on and so forth... However the mostly useless 1K WS 120fps seems to have been accidentally knocked down to 96fps. Not that I miss that feature.

Does this mean we can also use HDRX in 4K 24fps?! Could someone test this? I'm thinking the Scarlet just increased in value.

Doesn't work for me - you made me get out of bed and build my cam...

Only have my Motion Mount at the moment or else I'd test it for you right now. HDRx doesn't work with the MM so I'd need to switch to another mount. Surely someone else around here has a Scarlet they can test with soon.

Wait, is something up with mine? You're seriously saying that setting yours to 5K switches it back to 12fps like usual? It's getting late but I promise you guys I will post some sort of proof tomorrow before leaving for Vegas. I have no idea what's going on if other Scarlets are not doing this. Will post R3Ds tomorrow.

I can confirm that mine isn't allowing this either. Very strange.

Serious apologies everyone, because my cam is definitely doing 5K at these framerates. I'm checking again to make sure it's not just a bug showing 5K but actually recording 4K.

12fps max. Im going to bed. Shame on me

Really truly sorry for the letdown. I know I am going to get flooded with posts like this now. Clearly nobody believes me but I tomorrow I will post video of it, R3Ds, whatever I can do to get to the bottom of it.

No need to apologize. In fact quite the contrary. If your camera is in fact shooting in 5k on these settings it proves that it can be done on the Scarlet.

I am so tired right now and need to go to bed, but Mikey's made my point... If my cam is doing it, others can as well. That's why I rushed to post this thread, not knowing that others would have a different experience.

The thing I need to check tomorrow afternoon is whether it is actually able to record at these framerates and FOV, or if it's just displaying them but recording something else.
