  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Ok... so why are people complaining?[snip]

Because they don't read the specs (now there are no excuse : it's on red.com !) and don't get it because on C70 and Canon EOS R cameras it is obviously working.
And it's a different demographic also. As mentionned earlier, people who bought a Sony Venice with the E-Mount option did not complain about the fact that the electronic was not supported at launch (I have no idea if it is now btw) because they read about what they were buying. Komodo is so affordable that lot of people who are more familiar with the DSLR/Hybrid world buy it without aknowledging what it offers. At least it's my feeling, I might be totally wrong :p

Ok... so why are people complaining? Ugh, it's one thing to criticize a lack of technology or questionable choice from a camera manufacturer, but complaining about features that will happen later just boggles my mind. "Let's just wait for everything to be in place so we can start filming with the Komodo in two years from now", or we can start using it now with lots of possibilities and when the time comes it will increase in value of features. The AF system isn't even in its final form yet so the full benefits of RF lenses and the AF system wouldn't even be there even if it had RF support. I don't see the reasoning behind the complaint if it's just a matter of time before we get RF lens support. It seems to be the biggest complaint going in circles right now... ugh.

First off, it's not a complaint - it is saying that RF lens control is important to us and we would like clarification of where we are in development. If it is known that the RF protocol is essentially figured out and it is just a matter of further implementation of various lenses and writing firmware for the Komodo that's one thing. If they so far have no access, then that is entirely different because it is likely far down the road or may never happen unless Canon opens it up.

This can be applied to anything, not just cameras: Buy it for what it can do today, not what it is promised to do tomorrow. A manufacturer may have all of the best intentions in the world of adding/implementing a feature at a later date, but stuff happens and it may never happen for various reasons. Then people are upset and feel let-down, disappointed or even betrayed or lied to. So really people have two choices: they can either look at what it can do today and if that is enough, they can get it. But if they really want or have to have a feature that is promised for later, then they should wait for it to be implemented. That is the only way they can avoid disappointment.

For a little perspective, when Sony released the Venice, the native E-Mount(Sony’s own mount), was not functioning.

I am not trying to be argumentative, but the Venice weighs in at over 8 1/2 pounds, and is more in line with the Red Ranger series, where I would expect a PL mount and not sure how much the Venice is even used with an E mount. The Komodo's main appeal is the small size and light weight, both of which will/would be enhanced with RF lenses due to size/weight/autofocus capability. For specific needs like the Komodo was originally intended, even without RF support, it cannot be beat. I had the expectation that Komodo would be released with it's own native mount functional, and likely it will at some point, just not now. If I didn't already have two DSMC2 Helium cameras, I would jump on buying one now, but for the kinds of additional functionality I would be interested in, I cannot see buying it along with a bunch of EF lenses (Nikon stills shooter) only to later have to purchase RF lenses, but I might be a unique case. Also there is all the other things ones needs like batteries/media/external display/timecode considerations/etc to make it a functional part of a Red ecosystem. If I adapt it to my PL lenses, much of the value proposition of the size/autofocus is lost. Don't get me wrong, I think it is an amazing technology at a very reasonable price.

You're not unique in this regard-- I just put in my order for a Komodo, and I'm also a Nikon still lens shooter. I expect my (manual) Zeiss Milvus and Nikon AIS collections to spend a lot of time on the camera. However, just last year I finally broke down and bought some Sony autofocus glass for the A7RIII, and I've been surprised at how useful it can be-- say on a gimbal, or when I want a b-cam on an interview subject. So I'm coming around to the idea of picking up some EF/RF lenses-- but also getting a little lens mount fatigue...

Exactly. All we're asking for is information a bit less nebulous than "maybe, at some time, and we're feeling it, your RF lenses will work....nah screw it, we'll just call it a RF style mount and call it a day."

It's not a complaint, but rather due diligence on our part to make sure before slapping down the better part of 10 grand that we understand what it is that we're buying. We know that the capability at this time is not there, but do we have an ETA? Because if the RF won't work, why go through the hassle of which adapter is better than the other, do these or those adapter mounted NDs suck, how much will the "chin strap" cost me to keep this mount from twisting while pulling focus and how much front heavier will that make my rig...ect. Perhaps these are not worthwhile considerations when building a rig to the moon, but I imagine most people, like me, are looking for the Komodo to be a stripped down little gimbal/drone warrior. As such, simple is better. Little body, little batteries, little lens, action.

Ditto -

and to Christopher saying if RF is important just wait to buy until you know it is available - that's all well and good, but RED has given us Hydrogen purchasers a 60 day window to get the discount paid for by that other RED company :wink5:.

I think it's safe to say that there was a lot of disappointment with the Hydrogen. Especially after it was decreed the "worst tech product of the year" - which BTW I don't agree with - I think it was a decent technological swing for the fences and sometimes you hit a bloop single - and as to reliability I haven't had some of those issues. I think the greater disappointment was how it was essentially abandoned - little in the way of firmware improvements or editing, etc. You used to be able to play the files in the Mac version of RED player and then you couldn't (haven't checked lately) - seems like RED was awfully quick to divorce RED. Then we were told we get a discount on Komodo (which really had nothing to do with the phone, so if RED is paying RED the $1000 why couldn't it be toward any RED product) ...... then RED sold something like a thousand prepro Komodos without offering it to the Hydrogen people.

Bottom line all we are asking is for a little clarity on RF progress/timellne.

Great point. I didn't even think about.

I'd agree with that.

Even when they say a feature exists, best to test it out before buying. A lot of people bought the RED OLED EVF based on the description of "deep blacks and rich contrast" but turns out the camera sends a lifted signal with reduced contrast and slightly gray black to the EVF. So, even if the OLED EVF is "OLED", you will not get full contrast or an OLED look. Even on a brand new Red Ranger Gemini, they're saying it isn't going to get fixed, because they designed it that way, but they're also still kind of saying "but who knows". SO, I get you on that "maybe, at some time, and we're feeling it, your RF lenses will work....nah screw it, we'll just call it a RF style mount and call it a day."

more detail here.

It does feel like most of the brands have lost a lot of trust as they all race to out spec each other for ever shrinking markets.

For me, there is no other integrated EVF option for the Ranger, so, I'm not going to replace the RED OLED EVF. Just going to stick with it, and work with it as is.

Cheers everyone!

Alain,

The DJI RS2 looks like it was just made for the Komodo.

So far so good... I am buying it... Seems indeed a perfect pair and it is so light and compact it's ideal for traveling... Also Rand, after Phil shared the Bebob Factory GmbH 2 Channel V-micro Charger, seems to me I don't wanna have BP batteries and deal with multiple adapters and chargers... Instead, going with global dynamic batts and this small V-mount charger allows me to maintain same DSMC2 ecosystem on both cameras, keeping it simple also going into DSMC3 in 2021-2022.

Am I reasoning properly? Lol

This Week KOMODO should arrive! I'm excited!

Alain,

I'll have to check out the Bebob Factory GmbH 2 Channel V-micro Charger you said Phil mentioned, do you have a link to it? With what seems to be a shortage of BP 955 and BP 975 batteries currently, I think looking into viable alternatives would be a wise thing to do. I'm sure the BP batteries will be back in stock again, however who knows if this will become a continual problem due to the pandemic.
