  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Oh my god - just read this and actual man love and massive respect to you and the team. One must never pre-judge, although that seems that is what many think the internet is for. When you know the facts the footage is even cooler (well RED hot!) thanks for sharing and putting forward a response that was respectful and in line with what I hope the RED community is all about.

Stay safe - Be kind...

and all those with and awaiting a Komodo. Enjoy the journey. I am!

Awesome to hear Gabriel. I used to think I put my camera through some challenging conditions. Way to push the limits man. Great work!

The unstoppable Siqfüti FTW!!!
Loving every bit of extreme füti you are sharing!!!

I've been shooting with it alongside Helium. I can't tell the difference. I asked some people to guess which frames were Komodo and which were Helium, and basically everybody got it wrong. The only ones who got it right guessed lucky, given the Helium shots were static and the Komodo was on gimbal.

Feels like the same DR. Same everything. The only differences I THINK I see are slightly deeper blacks, slightly less green bias...IDK maybe a little better highlight rolloff. Hard to say, but it looks smoother to me.

For all intents and purposes, suffice it to say you're getting a 6K Helium in the size of a matchbox. If you've shot with Helium, you know what to expect. The image quality is absolutely spectacular. Kinda ridiculous how cheap the camera is for what you're getting.

AF is getting good, too.

Cool, thanks. Hopefully black Komodos are not too far off

I wish there was a date we could plan on for ordering black Komodos. Also, I'm assuming we can buy this through our normal rep and not some funky think like when the Raven was sold through the Apple Store.

The creaminess and color of those night shots is incredible.. I'll say it again, Graeme cracked the color code right here, congrats..

Here are the shots.

Steven is not really known for his spectacular lighting... Probably not the best first name DP to use. He loves the look of iPhones, I'll just say that.

Making movies and high quality TV is hard, and Steven Soderbergh goes to great long lengths to maintain full control, even DPing his own projects.

The Knick is one of the best looking shows on TV, and Oceans 11 (that he also DP'd) is also fantastic.

He clearly knows what he's doing....and also appears to know how to spend/use his budgets per project...

I wouldn't dismiss his choices so easily or cavalierly...

Soderburgh is an actor’s filmmaker. His production design approach is minimalist most of the time. Sort of a cinematic version of the philosophy Jerzey Kosinski expressed in “Towards a Poor Theater”: all you need is an actor and an audience. Most of his films have been shot on Reds going all the way back to “Che” shot on the first two Red One prototypes. The phones were an experimental departure, but fit the minimalist philosophy.

Not to totally gang up on you, but he doesn't like the look of the phones, he even has mentioned issues with working with them. He likes the form factor and the unobtrusive relationship between them and the talent on set.

And yeah, he's more of a natural lighting/minimalist sort of dude. But that's his whip. I'll happily show him some of the modern lights out there, but it will slow his days down and effect the "hey, lets actually frame up over here" mentality.

The really rad thing about this production is hearing Jarred's interview and not knowing if this camera would even turn on with that early of a prototype, then they shot an entire feature film with it.

Crazy.

Seems Wooden Camera has been busy cooking.

They also have a B-Box that connects to the EXT Port on KOMODO and seems really interesting (it blocks one of the battery slots but of you combine it with their V-Mount or Gold-Moint plate you can still have power redondancy).

Can Komodo generate or receive Timecode through that Komodo control port without this WC B-Box?

I don't know but I suspect NO because the breakout baseplate from RED will exist to add the TC in/ou (and other goodies).

Shouldn't need it. If you look at the PIN diagram for the port there is a separate pin for TC IN, TC OUT and GENLOC, each. If someone knows what they're doing they could build their own cables with only what they need. You could go super low-profile and build a cable that was TC IN only and just slap a Tentacle on it(or just for jamming purposes and let it go, like back in the day). Personally I'd like to have a cable that was TC IN with maybe TC OUT via BNC. Multi-pin TC is stupid from my point of view. I'm from the broadcast/network world and we do TC IN and OUT via BNC. Much simpler and cheaper than specialized multi-pin cables.
