  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Sounds good. I thought I had remembered seeing or reading before that custom filter combos were available. Are there any plans to build an EF version for the Komodo, as well? I know Canon builds a vari-ND adapter, but I’d much prefer this type of system that is basically the same that I’ve used for decades.

RF-EF Revolva is in progress. I bought the Canon vari-nd myself... it's ingenious and light, but optically not great and ergonomically awful with a tiny fiddly wheel with no actual markings or stops.

I love the Revolva on my Helium, and when I can get a Komodo, will definitely want the PL/RF version - I can use my existing filter wheels, and also the set of Sigma Cine primes on both cameras. Does the chinstrap mount option give enough strength to hold the PL glass to the mount and only the camera then needs support?

Chinstrap gives you a PL mount that is solidly integrated to the camera. No twist, no movement. I'd have no concerns with any typical PL lens.

Does komodo have IBIS? How is the AF on Komodo compared to Fujifilm XT4?

KOMODO is not a finalized project yet and they’re still adding new function and improvements. But I wouldn’t expect any kind of IBIS.
The Autofocus is supposed to be improved comparing with the one in the DSMC2 EF lenses, as they’re using now RF. Jarred said not to expect the amazing autofocus of current RF cameras (and, I guess, the Fujifilm cameras), but it would be good:

I'm in the same boat. Wanted a Red since spending a day with a friend shooting his Red One in 2008. Have other cameras, but I shoot mostly for fun and personal creative projects since about 1990, not for profit, couldn't justify the cost of one even for a serious hobby cam.
Komodo may change that, but it remains to be seen given the current economic climate and the pandemic. I blame RED for my obsession with shooting Bayer raw formats for motion pictures.

I think there are many of us 'enthusiasts' who couldn't justify a RED camera before the KOMODO days. Jarred just opened a whole new market for RED and I am very stoked for that.

Komodo is fascinating in that "way" to me. Whatever version people come in at, Stormtroopers and early birds are more pricey than Production Black cameras, add in on the Black models if people get a Hydrogen discount or not, to get into a bare bones setups is less than $1000 on top of the camera price. Even a well rounded shooting package as sub-$10K with little bits and bobs.

That's a real basic setup and you can certainly go nuts from there, but you can have a modest shooting setup with a couple batteries, a charger, a couple CFast 2.0 cards, and an entry level 5" display. Toss in a lens whether you have stuff already you want to find some new glass. Maybe add a cheap powered mic. Fairly easy system to get into price-wise.

My weird excitement here is coming back into the world of small cameras. I unfortunately haven't been able to use GoPros and things like that on my shoots and Komodo is providing a lot of fun with creative rigging. Much of what I've been sharing is just figuring out how I'll be using while filming some tests here and there. Honestly more fun than I expected. I've grabbed some kit that I haven't used in about 10 years as well as some newer bits that are aimed towards tiny cams like this. Going to get much more fun soon too.

Komodo may be affordable precisely because I do already have everything in the kit to support it except C-fast cards and a couple of lens adapters.

$10K Sounds like C300 mk3 and FX9 territory. They are both being delivered now. So i guess delivery of Black working Komodo before Christmas. Shall be interesting how “busy” video business will be in 2021. Lets hope we all can make some money next few years.

$10K Sounds like C300 mk3 and FX9 territory.

Both of those are alarmingly different cameras, but the FX9 will likely be better in low light and has the ability to do things like 6K 60p, but you're also looking at $13.5K out of the gate versus about 50% that price with a modest shooting setup with Komodo, not to mention with the extension unit the camera is over 4 times heavier.

C300 MKII you can get up and rolling for less than the FX9, the real competition in that space is the C500 MKII for the FX9, sort of.

But yeah, those are very different styles of cameras, different sizes, different weights, different everything.

I don't know if finalized pricing has happened, but between versions and discounts I think you're looking at less than $5K to around $7K depending on Early Chroma, Stormtrooper, and then Production Black w/ the Hydrogen Discount. I don't know if it's written in stone, but the price for the Early Chroma and Stormtrooper are higher than the Production Black and don't benefit from the Hydrogen Discount as far as I know, I have the invoice right here. Things obviously can and might change however due to Covid mainly, but generally that's what's been hinted at in this thread and online elsewhere.

They are just really different cameras and I don't see much competition of overlap here. Pretty clear when you're palming Komodo :)

I think the dynamic though is where DSMC2 bodies sort of play against those fields right now and with a distant scope over the horizon how DSMC3 will shape up. Not expecting that to be playing "down there" price-wise though. But maybe, who knows. Craziest bit is really some of the used prices on some used DSMC and even DSMC2 Dragon 6K cameras in comparison to these camps, which is a very valid comparison feature-wise.

Dunno really. Everybody will be attracted one system or the other. I nearly grabbed a C500 MK II for instance before the world paused, but Komodo solves much more of my practical gaps in filing in where my Monstros might not be ideal like POV cam. But I'm still tinkering. Until I know how I've used it for half a year on actual jobs it's really unknown.

Yes they are different cameras. Built to work in various situations.
FX9 is not FF in 60p. C300 with DPO is actually better then C500 when it comes to noise. Not to mention it does have more variety of practical every day recording codecs. Sooooo they are out there and built to last and be reviewed and tested. FX9 is actually not better in low light then c300.
But both cameras will have better Low Light and AF then Komodo, that is for sure.
So no fancy Colours or Names for C300 or FX9 but they are out and ready to be tested, reviewed by anybody interested. And bought now. Ohh yeeeh and did i mention 2-3 yr interest free repayments?

reviewed by anybody interested.

When they were allowed to. Hell, even I was under embargo for 10 months on one of the cameras mentioned above. I have no problem saying I was fortunate to get a very, very look at the Canon C500 MK II extremely early on (as well as the Sumire about a year before release). Little value in talking about a camera that early on, especially when actual hardware changes in that case changed before the production model.

If you want a Komodo review, I'm sure somebody will do it likely too soon even, camera reviews are viewer gold online for new content. Just also know that the "real review you want" is when the early cameras, i.e. the early very limited edition chromas, have been well beaten on and Stormtroopers and likely Black Komodos are in the wild. You review Komodo as it is today and you literally won't know all that it can do.

Right now, a lot of refinement, optimization, and quality of life is happening. Don't think Jarred would mind me mentioning it, but since you guys saw an early menu crawl through there was one font in particular I loathed in a big way. That was updated in Friday's firmware release. That was something put in my first 48 hour report with the camera. Low on the list of things that needed looking at, but certainly an easier one to tackle and make the the camera feel more RED and less weird.

People keep wanting RED to be more like company X, Y, or Z on some stuff like product announcements, but fortunately they still prefer not doing what everybody else does. Truly hope it remains that way as long as possible. Don't worry though, they'll be a day in the future where testing went on fully behind the scenes and a big social media driven camera announcement and events occur for preorders and a camera ships in 2-6 months or whatever. Hopefully we won't have to ever pay for firmware updates or unlocking features as well.

Patience is always tough when something is closer to being released. Oddly we have time to be somewhat patient and it's allowed me to beat on this beast a bit more than normal even because most of the film industry isn't back to work yet. It's still very hard to comprehend how RED even pushed out the first batch of these during the pandemic pause. Nobody thinks about any of this stuff apparently. But when you get to see Jarred on a live stream explaining everything going on and how they pulled it off, it's rather impressive.

Bare in mind there is at least one camera I know off that was going to be announced at NAB from another company that is no longer planned for 2020. Next somewhat interesting announcements are July and October, both of which were targeted for April announcements as well. Whole world isn't exactly functioning at full capacity just yet. It's effected every manufacturer and still is.

I haven't used the FX9 but I can't stand the FX7. It takes a nice picture but it's a plastic mess and you need to know it well to not mess it up.

I have a C300ii. Great camera but it's such a pain getting the color in the footage to look like how I shot it - the LUTs don't match. And it's as big and heavy as my DSMC1 Epic.

The variety of codecs and LUTs is so freaking annoying and confusing. With RED, you turn it on, expose, and shoot. It's like film.

Can't speak to the low light of Komodo, but you're probably right there. I still might upgrade my main cam to Gemini at some point for that reason, if COVID doesn't drive me out of business.

RED has a 0% interest plan, at least for the current cameras. (I doubt for Komodo.)
