  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Don't worry there is a light at the end of the tunnel... The Governor of California opened the doors to "stage 2 return" next week for select businesses, manufacturing being one of them. Which means come Monday with the blessing of the health department, our manufacturing facility can open again and some select RED manufacturing staff can can SLOWLY start turning on the machine again.

It's going to take us a few weeks to sort things out before we can really do much.. nobody has really dealt with this kind of thing before. There are a lot of new protocols in place and a lot of Covid related modifications we need to do to the factory.. lots of those things will most definitely slow us down at the start but the health and safety of our team is obviosuly most important to us so we need to get it right.

Luckily our partners in Mexico have been champions through all this... we have enough parts to start making cameras again including small batches of Komodos. Gotta get all the parts received, QC'd , and get our ninjas trained up and I hope we can start seeing cameras come out of the oven some time next month. We do have a few vendors that are still closed or bogged down.. like powder coating, but as Phil mentioned I am taking that task upon myself till it sorts out.

All in all we have probably lost just over 30 days to this whole thing so far... let's hope things don't go sideways again with this virus after the world re-opens.. Everyone needs to move slow and be safe because if we move to fast and we need to do this all over again people are gonna start losing their minds.

Tahnks for your transparency. (that aspect of the company and reduser.net is a huge part why I enjoy what you are doing).

Appreciate the Update. It helps us stay sane. Gives us something to think about.

Thanks for the update Jarred - Really hope everyone stays safe as we all start returning to work. Go RED Team !

Amazing, thanks so much for the update. Is there any word on when the camera will get an official release and specs list released? Be great for those of us on the fence between a few cameras and deciding, will make waiting out for Komodo much easier.

Will anyone be using Komodo to augment their A cam with spatial/depth information for sfx?

IF there's a way to have those informations (which quite frankly I don't know AT ALL I never worked with those), I sure will use the camera like that. Anything metadata related that can improve and make the work of everyone faster and easier is a huge YES in my book.

lI think Komodo will be the A cam for a lot of vfx shoots. Global shutter is a huge game changer for everything CG related.

Thanks for the update Jarred. Your behind the curtain peeks at where Komodo is at are always super refreshing, and super welcome. Stay safe, both you and the whole RED team. And stay motivated knowing your making a camera for the moment: tiny, adaptable, yet powerful enough for any Hollywood production. I can see dozens of Komodos going deep into the woods with major productions self-isolating for weeks to make series, movies, etc. Not to mention how useful they will be indoors on studio lots.

All the best

And yes not only cg related stuff. But all fast camera movement kind of stuff. Camera car setups, Steady cam, wire cam actionsports etc. For a very long time we convinced our selfs that a rolling shutter was ok. We got used to the look and seing fast moving stuff skew trough the frame. But I think when the option of not having any of is avalable again I think many will choose it instead of more K’s, higher light sensibility and bigger DR.

Words!
Thanks Jarred and all the team at Red!

Good point. Agreed. I'll rephrase the question.

The only reason I mentioned "A cam", is in those situations that maybe someone has a specific look they are going for, so they choose a different camera for the A cam, and then use the Komodo, or several, to capture additional visual information for vfx work later. But, I don't mean to rule out the use of Komodo, or any camera, as A cam.

Using two or three Komodos in tandem to get spatial information for VFX. Will there be ways that the Komodos will be specifically tailored towards these kinds of workflows? With 6K and GS, and small footprint, they seem like great tools for for that.

The VFX camera rigs on "The Irishman" were pretty mammoth.

Thanks for the update Jarred. Grateful for the transparency. Also impressed to see the great job RED is doing to safely open doors. Big fan of your company.

Sure Komodo will be great to use as witness camera, as for such Global shutter is a tremendous plus. But that is also a fact for the A cam if doing VFX work and we dont know what komodo will deliver in terms of DR, light sensitivity, pixel quality etc. Technology moves forward, to me it would not be a complete shocker if it will trump most of the current offerings, then when everyone ordered one or a few, Jarred starts a new thread and unveils the DSMC3 line... which of course will be even better. :)

Been thinking much the same.
